Barbara Walters Says Paula Deen Makes Kids Fat

Ummm, Babs should realize that Paula Dean is AN AUTHOR of cookbooks. She is an author of cookbooks who has carved out a career on dishes that are 'Southern Comfort Foods'. I do not think for one minute a majority of her fans are cooking from her books all the time. In fact, I don't think Ms. Dean herself cooks like she does on her show all the time any more than I think Emeril does his "BAM!" in his own kitchen.

I think the Lunchbox book is probably more realistically geared towards special occasions like a kids first day of school, or a first day at a new school, or a birthday.

Barbara Walters has lost her connection with viewers and is a great big bully for ambushing Paula Dean like that. There are much bigger fish to fry and she shouldn't go sharpening her claws on unsuspecting fluff show hostesses.

I cannot stand THE VIEW or Barbara Walters...I used to love it when Gilda on Saturday Night Live would do her skit on Rosanne Rosanne a Dana...It was a takeoff on Barbara and ALWAYS cracked me UP!:lmao:

That was Babawawa! :lmao: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/clips/baba-wawa-at-large/32829/

Roseanne Rosanadana would always answer letters written by Mr. William Fader from Fort Lee, New Jersey.

Gilda left us too soon, what a wonderful talent.

Paula Deen's recipes are sickening. It would not kill her to lighten them up a bit. I think it's very irresonpsible to make a cookbook for kids and fill it with unhealthy, fattening recipes.

You aren't from the south are you? lol. Seriously, I grew up eating this way, my family is from the south, however we didn't sit still all day and play video games, I was on the swim team, we payed outside rode bikes and that type of thing. In fact on the weekend my dad would make me go outside and get some fresh air and exercise. And as a side note, I don't have high cholesterol, and a little over weight now, but I am 46 and actually eat healthier food than when I was growing up. And my parents who grew up eating like Paula dean and cooking like her both lived to the late 80"s. So Paula is GREAT in my book.

Don't y'all think if you walked into a room with BW and with PD that Paula would be like visiting an old friend and with Barbara it would be a bit cold and awkward? Maybe it is just me, but between Paula's cooking and her personality, I think she wins.

I love southern cooking. I love watching Paula Dean cook it too. And I'm hoping Emeril says "bam'' in his kitchen too. ;)

The number of foods dropping the HFCS is growing. Even Miracle Whip just did this quietly. Last year I checked the ingredients...HFCS. Drat. The other week I was walking by the MW display, decided to check...no HFCS. I figure they did it without fanfare b/c the general company is still using it in other things, and doesn't want to basically say "we don't think this ingredient is OK so we're dumping it from this product" when they're still using it. (there's actually an old thread somewhere here on the Dis with those of us who don't use it in our diets anymore...search "high fructose" and that might get you there)

HFCS caught on because it was way cheaper than sugar. I have a feeling that because corn is now being used to make ethanol prices are equalizing or sugar has become cheaper.

I was able to get some sugar pepsi and it tastes better.

I personally like both ladies and it's a shame that they seemed to trade barbs a bit. I can't say that Barbara is wrong though but Paul Deen is just like this. No surprises here.

Exactly!! A lot of kids that grew up eating that way also grew up helping their parents with the outside work and gardening. They were actually told "go outside and play" and they did it. My husband still prefers the good old fashioned fat/calorie filled way of eating that Paula Deen represents. He is skinny as a rail, but he works it all off. He did as a kid and he still does now (although he only gets the really fat laden foods at his mom's now).

As for a preference between the two ladies: Paula Deen hands down. She is warm, friendly and inviting. The kind of person you could sit down at the kitchen table with and drink coffee over some good old neighborhood gossip. I don't think she could interview people in the same way Barbara has done, but she is a much more likable person.

Besides the story of how Paula got to where she is, is just amazing to me. She represents what most single moms are striving for.

I'm on TEAM PAULA!

We also ate like this growing up but like other homes there were lots of fresh vegetables as well. Collard greens, turnip greens and mustard greens were eaten. My mother having grown up poor often referred to them as a poor man's vegetable.

It would make for a boring show if Paula Deen showed viewers how to cook greens.

It was an adorable segment. My 14yo son is an athlete and he treats his body like a temple because it gives him the tool he needs to perform at his highest level. He rarely eats sweets, high fat food, or meat. He knows that once in a while he can splurge. No soda for him in a restaurant, no dessert unless it's a special occasion. He's tall, strong and healthy. He also LOVES to cook and I'm getting him this cookbook for Christmas because he's always loved to watch Paula Deen and Martha Stewart, lol! It's his big secret and now I've outed him. Good thing he doesn't read here!!!

I like Paula Deen. The problem is Barbara Walters. She is one rude lady. I don't get the people that like her? I think she is getting worse with age. If you don't like the guest you are going to have on stay home Barbara! By her facial expressions and body language you can tell she is not a fan of Paula Deen. I realize she is know Bill Clinton but give the women some respect. Last week she had an episode on where she told the women and the country that she did not want to touch, hug or fake kiss her "fans" or audience members because of the swine flu. Whoopi was in total agreement. Sheri was the only one that said she would continue because she loves her fans. Whoopie is becoming the black version of Barbara. The view needs to go or get some new hosts. Sheri can stay. She has some personality. The others should stay home. I wonder how Whoopi makes it there every morning?? Very miserable ladies. Elizabeth should just stay home and take care of her kids. She is another downer. Did I metion I don't like the View?

My DS15 is becoming more conscious about what he eats as well. He's training daily for baseball tryouts that will be in Feb. What does your son mostly eat?

Rarely meat? I guess the suggested diet for athletes has changed yet again! It seems to change with every decade.

When my oldest ds was playing baseball, he was told by the trainers to eat a lot of meat or at least a lot of protein. NO sodas because of the carbonation, sweets in moderation, lots veggies and fruit, extra carbs before practice and games.

Younger ds is a "pro" wrestler and it is still suggested that he up his protein intake to gain weight.

I'm always shocked at the way ladies of the View treat their guests. Would you invite someone into your home and then chastise them for the way they eat. It's a well known fact that Paula Deen is a southern chef. Her recipes reflect the area that she is from. To lure someone onto your show just to publicly chastise them is rude in every way.

The French cook in butter and use heavy creams all the time in their cooking and they aren't known as an obese nation mainly because they get more exercise and they eat much smaller portions. I've actually dined at the Lady & Sons and the portions were modest and just enough. I hate walking away from a table stuffed. They weren't huge plates full of food. You can eat "southern" occassionally.

I think we're missing a reason for barbara's attitude toward Paula Deen. Paula is trying to put together a cable show that resmebles The View that she will host and have several co-hosts. I'm betting Barbara is not happy with this because Paula Deen is much more fun and happier to be around than Barbara is. PD may not be someone's favorite but one would have have to admit that barbara seems to have the personality of a dish rag.

As Paula told Oprah, "I'm a cook, not your doctor!!"

I think you are right.

Same thing here. DS is in wrestling and his coach is always asking that the kids eat lean meat. Also veggies (yeah right) and fruit. Complex carbs and little sugar.

Maybe it depends on the sport?
