Wait, so they're basically letting terrorists walk free? If so, I've got a problem with that.
They won't be walking free. They'll be housed somewhere. Most likely on American soil (But hey, you know what? They've been on "American Soil" all along- Gitmo is American owned and operated). They'll probably all go to maximum security prisons where people like gang leaders and serial killers and homegrown terrorists go.
Y'know, I heard that these people didn't even get a fair trial. Just because some of those people may be terrorists, does not mean all of them are.
And there's likliehood that the prisoners will go back to their own countries. There's a Canadian born terrorist nammed Khadr who has yet to be tried in the US where he comitted the crime, and the Canadian government just doesn't want him back. They're trying to delay dealing with his case in their own system.. which they probably will have to eventually. The Conservatives have been criticised for a quite a long time for not bringin him back and leaving him in GITMO. And I'm not sure what I'm talking about, but the article said that the man should be coming back to Canada envetually.
Two points.
You are correct when you say most of them didn't get a fair trial. Many (the majority, actually) have never even been charged with a crime, yet we are holding them and torturing them.
And you are also correct about where they might go. There is a strong possiblity that some prisoners that are either not a threat at all, are minor threats, or will be justly dealt with in their own countries will return to where they came from.
I'm all for this. Gitmo has been a center of controversy and is nothing more than an excuse to torture people. It needed to be closed and I applaud President Obama for doing so.
