Bankers/Accts Receivables...how does this happen?

My Dh has all his payments set up online through his bank. At a specific time for each bill, his bank deducts the funds from his account and sends it to the payor. He's had this set up this way forever (at least a year).

We just got a statement from his cell phone company saying they never received last month's payment and they were going to shut him off. We got online and looked, and had a confirmation from the bank that payment was sent. We read all the confirm #s to the cell phone rep, who could not locate the payment anywhere in their system.

Eventually, he had to fax her his bank statement showing the debit. They finally credited his account with the payment, but still could not locate it.

I am just curious how this happens.

The payments that banks send out are actual paper checks. Only a few of the payments are electronic. I would call the bank and find out what happened.

I had no idea the bank used paper checks. I assumed it was all EFTs. Wow...that seems a little behind the times, doesn't it?

We get ours in a wire transfer type deal (EFT's) sometimes there are issues with the transmissions but that is rare, what may have happened is the bank sent the payment to the wrong payee.

They can figure that out real quick. And that may be wire the cellular phone company could not locate it.

I am a former banker. His money may have been credited to someone else's account.(Until the cell phone company tracks it down). There is not much you can do. You have the proof that it was debited from his account. Keep it.

Just out of curiosity - was it Sprint?

I have them e-mail my statement and they automatically debit my account - it's set up with them, not the bank. I never got a statement and they never took their money. Thankfully, I noticed it and was able to send out a payment over their website.

So annoying.
