Bama alumni and fans, let's celebrate~! ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!

What happened to?

"I will never go to Alabama, I am only interested in being the coach here [Miami].... how many ways do I have to say it?" "I have no interest whatsoever in that job."

Well at least you know he's honest.
:rotfl: The same thing that happened to "I will never go to the NFL. Been there, done that. We're very happy in Baton Rouge. Our kids are settled and we've made great friends here. I have no interest whatsoever in the NFL or Miami."

And Bama fans, I seriously don't want to rain on your parade. If he is the real deal (Miami makes me wonder), you do have something special. But take it from us when we tell you not to get too attached. I'll be shocked if the buyout clause in his contract isn't very favorable to him.

We're following this story with a lot of interest. Our local high school quarterback, Robert Marve, broke the state passing record this year and led the Plant High team to their first state title. He had a soft committment to 'Bama before Shula was let go and then opened up his interest to some other schools, with a trip scheduled to look at Miami this weekend. The hiring of Saban may renew his interest in Alabama....

That young man would be wise to head on down to Quarterback U, my Alma mater, the University of Miami. We've got a new sheriff in town as well, and I don't think he's planning on taking any prisoners either!!

Plant City, FL with the Strawberry Festival? That's where both my cousins grew up and my dad and Aunt.

Yes, if he's really that good, let's send him to Miami ;)

I'm just getting a kick out of the fact that both of the coaches that were offered the Alabama job are from little ole Marion County, West Virginia. We're a regular coaching hotbed:rotfl:

Seriously, I really don't know that Saban's resume merits being the highest paid coach in NCAA football.

Saban coached one year here at Toledo and left them in the lurch. I didn't care much because I am a Bowling Green alum, but I've seen him leave several teams since then, each time for greener pastures. As an "impartial" (meaning I don't have loyalty to any southern school) observer I think he's kind of a coaching "ho". But if he's the solution to whatever problems Alabama has, more power to ya.

For that kind of money, I believe the correct term is "call-girl"!!

Well, neither DH or myself are holding our breath expecting great things.

While I'm relieved that we hired someone and the media frenzy will be over(plus having to hear every single male I know under the age of 60 tell me why HE would make a great Bama coach), I dread next season for Saban and his family.

I just hope he understands the ENORMOUS amount of pressure he is going to be under. NFL big time? BAH! There is no way it even rivals an entire state full of people who will look to you as third only to God and Jesus in ranks of importancy. And I'm not kidding. Bear Bryant is practically canonized in the state. Don't get me wrong, I eat, breathe, and sleep Alabama football too, but I recognize that the coaches are just guys hired to do a job.

Does his wife realize that she and his children will be harrassed if he loses a game? Does he realize that people will follow him to the dentist office if they recognize his vehicle? I'll never forget Brodie Croyle year before last having to drive his DAD'S truck towards the middle of the season because people were literally following him everywhere.

Plus, his track record isn't one that leads me to think he'll stick around if things don't go well OR even if they do! If he has a good season, great! Then some NFL team will come along and dangle an extra million in front of his face and POOF! We'll be in the same boat, well....a smaller boat because we blew our wad on this guy. If he can't turn it around within a couple of years, well, then, Mal Moore will invite him to lunch at Cronin's (a la Jerry Maguire) and he'll be gone, too. He needs to take a hint from Shula: don't BUILD the multimillion dollar home, just rent one.

Anyway. I'm glad it's over, I'm excited to see what he can do, but deep down, I still wish that they would have saved a little money and gave Joe Kines a chance....at least one season. He's been the only constant in these players' life for the past few years, and they all respect him and will work hard for him. And while he did lose the bowl game, damnit, it sure was exciting in the secong half!

I'm sure he's used to that with us LSU fans. Trust me, if you loose just one game, they want your head on a stake. You should have heard the fans on the call in shows after we lost to Florida and Auburn this year.

:rotfl: Never met an LSU fan, eh?

You're right on all points.

LOL! GMTA :thumbsup2

You think 'Bama is that different from every other big time football or basketball university??!!??!! :rotfl2: This goes on with coaches at any football or basketball school. Heck now people start websites even. I recall fireronzook.com. :)

Aw...and here I thought that kind of behavior was unique to the southern schools.

No, I know it's everywhere...but it seems SEC fans are particularly rabid, or at least in my personal experience.

Heck. I live in a town right now that thinks they are too cool for school as far as sports. We've got a college basketball coach that makes 1.5 million a year, and they aren't even top 20, yet Coach Cal manages to live a relatively normal lifestyle. Our football team went 3-10, I think? And nobody really noticed. Heck, even our professional basketball team had to go 6-24 before they got a new coach.

It took me a while to adjust. Memphis is unlike anywhere else I've ever been. The city as a whole just doesn't seem to care about sports. You can't even get over 100 people at a high school football game. You can barely give away tickets to a Grizzlies' game.

I agree that the SEC schools have a "special" kind of "fan". :lmao: Some probably should be locked up!

I'd say the Big Ten and other conferences are pretty much as rabid as the SEC, in terms of fans. Aside from LSU, Saban's also been at Michigan State, so I'm sure he can handle the pressure of major college football.

Oh, you have to love those wishy-washy fans in Memphis who are die-hard UT football fans and then switch over and are die-hard Univ of Memphis basketball fans (and didn't attend either one). :confused3 :rolleyes1 Can't even stay loyal to a school for an entire year! The Memphis women's basketball draws larger crowds than anything else. Cry and whine when Nashville gets the NFL team, but don't even support the NBA team after building them a new stadium and abandoning the Pyramid. :sad2:

Just another reason out of MANY that we dislike Memphis so much. I've never been so happy to move as I was when we left in '97 (I went to grad school at UT Memphis Medical). We didn't enjoy living there at all.
