One of my cats had a bald spot this morning on his back between his shoulder blades. We did not notice it last night. He is a completely black cat so a patch of bare white skin would be very apparent. It was approximately the size of a dime. This morning it looked like an abrasion caused by sandpaper. It was not discharging pus. It did not look inflamed. It looked like a little scrape. It looked like raw skin.

This evening the skin looked completely normal with a tiny pink area in the center about the size of the head of a pin. It doesn't look raw or broken, just a little pink. But it appears that there is more hair loss. The bald spot is now about the size of quarter.

He's not licking or scratching it excessively. He isn't giving it much more attention than anything else he licks or scratches. He doesn't seem to be in pain and his behavior is otherwise normal. We're thinking this might be a bug bite. We thought ringworm too but it doesn't look like what it should (entirely) to be ringworm. Also, being 100% indoor, ringworm is unlikely.

He is a 100% indoor cat and there have been no environmental changes recently.

He will be going to the vet in the morning but have any of you seen anything like this in your cat?

I think it's some sort of bite. It could be an allergy...my cat is allergic to fleas (flea saliva, really) and whenever they bite him, he gets small bumps and loses patches of fur. He had an outbreak about 2 months ago and I didn't even realize it was his flea allergy for weeks because I'm home all day and I didn't notice any excessive scratching or itching, like I expected. My cat's an indoor cat, too, but I do have a dog so I'm sure he brought them in.
Good luck at the vet tomorrow.

Could have been a tick, if red. Our cat has a spot right on the back of the neck, black cat and smal dime size, not more then a speck red, so I think it is a flea bite. I had a flea on me earlier tonight. Also the one girls belly is getting bold from licking and she sleeps in the sink downstairs. It has tiny red dots and black. I think it is flea dirt and from scratching.

We had no problems with fleas all summer...NOT NOW!!!!!
ERGH.
But that is our culpurt....flip them over and look at the tummy, can you see any? I know I ahve to to get the Frontline and sweep sweep, every day and take the bag outside. What a pain!

Look for the flea dirt, because if it is ringworm and red spots and bald spots, you can get it real bad too.

I agree with the above, but also have you changed cat foods lately? I have a cat with a food allergy, of all things. Why not, she had to fit into the family...:rotfl: There is only one brand of cat food that I have found that she can eat, or she ends up with bald spots and hot spots. I also have to keep up with the Advantage, because fleas do the same thing to her.

I haven't seen any fleas but we have had a bit of an ant problem lately so we're thinking that is a candidate too.

The spot looked about the same this morning as it did last night. So it at least isn't getting worse.

He's at the vet now so we'll have the expert opinion soon.

I would guess ringworm, too. Hopefully, the vet will know what it is. :)

Our DD got ringworm from our new kitten when DD was a toddler...'cause I didn't know it was ringworm and didn't realize I needed to take the kitten in for meds.

Yeah, I'm a bad mommy. :rotfl:

Kitty is back from the vet. She did a scraping and didn't see ringworm or an infection. She suspects it's a bug bite of some kind. We'll be putting on antibiotic ointment for a week and he'll go back for a follow up.
