I love baked beans but don't have a good recipe. The meatloaf thread reminded me of that (I like meatloaf too).

Anybody want to share?

I cheat and open a can of Bush's baked beans. :teeth:

I had a aunt who made great baked beans, but she never had a recipe and she is no longer with us to ask how she made them.

I halfway cheat. I start w/a can of baked beans and then add chopped onion, dry mustard, brown sugar and ketchup and bake it in the oven. :teeth:

I use can of bake beans. a pound of (cooked) ground beef, and ketchup and brown sugar to taste. Put it in the oven at 350 for about 30mins. to 60mins

besides having a wonderful cooking board over yonder..........I love to make beans in the pressure cooker.
put beans in water for overnight
next day drain them and add
enough water to cover the beans
put in an onion cut in half....some
dry mustard and salt and pepper..
put molasses in a coffee mug with
about two or three inches of hot water
to mix the molasses good and then add
to the water and beans.....
if it doesn't smell like molasses ....add
a little more......this is where the nice
flavor comes in .....put in four to six
sweet or hot italian sausage....
bring to a simmer with the do hickey on top
and let it swish back and forth for an hour
very gently......
open and test and then if not cooked enough
put cover back on for a few more minutes

Listen to Pumba, she is a great cook..and knows her recipes...I have tried some of her recipes and they are yummy.

Here's a recipe my Dad passed on to me and it's a favorite with all my kids:

1 Lg. can pork and beans
1 Sm. can lima beans, drained
1 can kidney beans
1 Lg. onion, chopped
1/2 C. brown sugar
1/2 lb. ground beef
1/2 C. ketchup
1 Tbsp. dry mustard
6 strips bacon

In a large skillet, brown the been and onion. While it is browning, mix the remaining ingredients, then add to the beef mixture. Pour into a casserole dish. Cut bacon strips in half and lay on top of casserole. Bake at 350 degrees for 3 to 4 hours uncovered.

I serve this with a big green salad, and warm dinner rolls. Yummy!

Here's a recipe from the Food Network that's identical to the one that my Grandmother used for the entire time that I was growing up. The only thing that I do differently is to boil them until they begin to split and then I bake them.

Boston Baked Beans
2 cups dried navy or pea beans, picked over
3/4 pound salt pork
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 teaspoon English-style dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon grated onion
1 tablespoon sugar

In a bowl combine the beans with 4 cups cold water, let them soak overnight, and drain them, reserving any remaining liquid. Transfer the beans to a small heavy kettle, add fresh water to cover (about 31/2 cups), and simmer the beans, covered, for 1 hour. Drain the beans in a colander, reserving the cooking water and combining it with the reserved soaking liquid, and reserve the liquid. To the kettle add a 1/4 pound piece of the pork and the beans and bury the remaining piece of pork, well scored, in the center of the beans. In a small bowl stir together the molasses, sugar,1/2 cup of the reserved bean water, the mustard, the paprika, and the onion, pour the mixture over the beans , lifting the beans with a spoon to allow the seasoning to concentrate to the bottom of the kettle. Bake the beans, covered, in the middle of a preheated 300 degree oven, adding some of the reserved bean water at hourly intervals to keep the mixture covered and lifting the beans to allow the liquid to penetrate to the bottom of the kettle, for 6 hours. (The surface of the liquid in the pot should just cover the beans.) Remove the lid for the last hour of cooking.

I use the Vandecamps's baked beans to start --- usually by 2 large can--can use more

then I add

A-1 sauce
Boarshead spicey mustard
ketchup
bbq sauce
chopped onion
Lea - n - Perrins Worcesthire sauce
light brown sugar
Crystal hot sauce

taste to your liking(sorry I do not have measurements for this--have watched my mom do for years)

bake 300/350 for 30/40 minutes

enjoy :)

Semi -homade.

I start with a can of Bush's baked beans and add ketchup, mustard, minced onion, a little bit of garlic and pancake syrup. Then I pour pancake syrup over the top and bake. Kids love it.

A co-worker of mine makes the best baked beans I've ever had. She won't give out the recipe as she says it is her family secret. She did tell me that part of the secret is using pineapple. Now they also have some ground meat in them. I'm dying to get a recipe for this. Anyone know of a recipe for beans with pineapple?

My DH made the best baked beans ever, but it never dawned on me that I should get the recipe from him.. :( I know he started with the huge can of Grandma's Baked Beans and then added other things (pretty sure it was pieces of pork; brown sugar; - but I'm not sure what else)..

Some of the recipes posted here sound wonderful!

I start with Bush's Baked Beans with onions. I add ketchup, brown sugar and onions. I cook it on the stove until the onions are soft.

We use pork and beans with the following added in: chopped onion, bacon, dark brown sugar, ketchup and a little mustard. They are so good! Unfortunately I almost never make them since DH is allergic to beans. :( I might have to make some this next week.

Pumba, what kind of beans are you using? This sounds so good right now, I'm sitting behind my desk at work and drooling all ove the keyboard!

This thread is cool. In the UK, baked beans come from a tin and thats it. They're a huge staple of the British diet, but you take them out the tin, microwave them and eat them.

Its cool to see all these different ways of making them!

The best 'recipe' I've ever seen is to put them in a pan, cook them with a massive chunk of butter and a drop of hot sauce, and cook until they go mushy. That was so good on toast!

My secret ingredient is....

Rootbeer!!!

It does not matter what canned bean you use, your favorite is fine. I also use minced onion, brown sugar, bacon(I fry it before I put it in so that it is almost done) and I bake it in a casserole for an hour at 350. My baked beans are thick and still creamy. If you find yours are too watery, back them longer. If they are too dry, add more rootbeer, stir and rebake only for a few minutes.

Enjoy!!

I throw a big can of Bush's or Campbell's beans in a crockpot with a can of pineapple chunks and a kielbasa or smoked sausage cut in chunks a little bigger than the pineapple. Add a little mustard and let them slow cook a few hours.

Yum, now I want some now!
