Bagless ~ how do you do it?

We figure we're only 20 minutes from our resort and are only going to stay in a park for 3-4 hours, break, and return later. How much extra junk do we need? I pity the families, been there done that but we're empty nesters now and try to make traveling, hands and shoulder free. No water bottles, fountains are fine and a cup of water at a CS suffices, tickets and little cash in pocket and camera. No cell phones needed, we're on vacation, we're not going to get separated, really can't figure that one and away we go, if rain is forecasted in the afternoon, usually a brief shower we duck into an attraction or shop but if it looks like clouds and going to rain alot, small ponchos fit in our pockets real fine. We do this not to escape the security counter but just to have our arms and shoulders free and not being a pack mule with stuff we never will use, the in case scenario, never has happened and to use a locker, might as well left it in the room

Empty nester here as well. I want to escape the security checkpoint but also ease my shoulders. I was at WDW in May and had bought this new purse from Disney. It was way too big and even though I didn't load it down, it loaded me down. One day, I stuffed the bare minimum in my pockets and Boy! was it free-ing.

I like the cell phone for when I travel. I call DH several times a day and my mom at least once. It's nice to share a bit of my day with them. I also like the cell when I go with others because we do seperate for a bit. One goes for FP and the other goes somewhere else. Or when DH and I travel, he loves to check out every BI and Off Kilter show. I like to do something else. It's nice to know that we won't get lost from each other if plans change.

Aren't fanny packs just a bag?

Well, yes and no. I guess you'd have to call them small bags on a belt. But instead of having to carry them with some kind of strap you just clip them around your waist. Most of us don't wear them on our fannies any more, tho. Just slide them around so the pouch is in front on your tummy. Not always an attractive look, but hey I'm havin a good time at Disney World so what do I care?!

If you're a Disney fashionista, I've seen lots of cute designs in the gift shops. I just like my plain ole black leather.

You all have inspired me! I'm going to see if we can go bagless this year! We just bought DH several new pairs of cargo shorts. It would be a whole lot easier on his back & shoulders than the backpack we usually carry. Especially in the early September heat! :cool1:

I make my mom carry my stuff. :rotfl:

I've always gone with family and my mom is the thread that ties all those trips together. She always has more stuff than I so I just add my few items to her bag. I will say that I never bother to take a raincoat/poncho. If I get wet...I'll dry. I'm pretty much a sunglasses, lip balm, cell phone and wallet kind of girl. But the wallet is pushing it a bit as far as bagless so...mom.

Yay for moms!

I must be a mean mom, I make my kids carry whatever they "need" to take to the park!

KTTW, DVC card & license in left front pants pocket; cash and safe key in right front pants pocket; AP either left front shirt pocket or w/KTTW; hat and sunglasses on head. I have OCD, so I always do it the same way to avoid having to check over and over that I have everything.

If it might rain and/or we're planning to get great seats for a parade or fireworks and wait a long while for the start, I deal with a fanny pack for ponchos and paperback books. If it's warm, I don't care about rain as much as I love to have my hands free and NOT wait in the bag line.

No camera, no cooler, no backpack...obviously, no kids! :lmao:

One WDW day when my kids were 12 and 14 and I found myself carrying everything that someone else didn't want to carry, I instituted "Mom for the Day". The Mom for each day had to carry all the cast-off belongings. It was amazing how little turned out to be essential when someone else had to carry it all! And I got a three day break!

I always go bagless when I go solo, but this August I'll have my two kids with me and my DH on most days.

The kids and I are trying cargo shorts. I actually bought a pair of men's shorts and darted the waist on them. Those pockets are so much easier to get into. My son has a swimsuit that has one big pocket on each leg and my daughter has really cute semi-cargo shorts. She wears them everywhere already so I know she'll be ok (since it's already in the 100s here in Texas).

I'll be carrying my cell phone in one pocket (in a ziploc) because it is web-enabled. I like to look up allears and other sites while we're there. I also have memos in my phone on all the rides (history, interesting facts, etc) to pass the time in lines.

Otherwise, I'll be carrying chapstick, small sunscreen, admission & cash and that's pretty much it. Any kind of first aid or headache stuff can be obtained at the first aid station in any park. Sunglasses and hat are on my head or around my neck. My small camera goes in another pocket. If I want to carry a disposable poncho, it will fit as well but will be a little awkward.

I've already tried all this out and the weight doesn't bother me. I used to wear a photographer's vest and put tons of stuff in it. Barely ever used any of it. Live and learn.

Does a fanny pack count as "bagless?" Not exactly hip, and it doesn't exactly go with my ensemble of spikes/cuffs/dyed-hair/guyliner, but it really made walking around the parks easier for me.

When I'm in a particularly vain mood and can't be seen with a fanny pack, I tend to really economize what I carry and just go with cargo shorts. No wallet, and instead just a money clip with cash, ID, card. Keys stay in the hotel, if possible. Phone in cargo pocket, camera (if carrying at all) in the other one. No souvenirs or restaurant leftovers until the end of the day, when I'm ready to walk out of the park.

Can someone explain why going bagless is so great? I'm surprised so many people seem to love it. I never had to wait to get through bag check (maybe there are lines at peak times?). The amount of stuff people are putting in their pockets doesn't weigh much, so the bag shouldn't weigh much. I believe having a bag keeps everything together well, keeps it from annoying me in my pocket, and keeps me sane knowing I have everything I need for the day.

Maybe there are some hidden virtues to this? I want to know!

DH and 3 DS's all wear cargo shorts! That is 8 pockets for me to use! Perhaps I can go bagless next summer!

The point about 'being in a park for 3-4 hours and what junk do we need in that time' makes sense to me. I have been the bag carrier for our family since DS 1 arrived thirteen years ago. I feel free just thinking about it :goodvibes

Are hand carried bottles of water allowed through the gates and security?

For me, even when I choose a small purse to take, I overload it and my shoulders start hurting. I shift between carrying it like a purse or across my body and STILL my shoulders and neck start hurting. The other thing is that I have tendency to loose stuff in my travel purse. Usually, it's because there's too many pockets and I don't know which pocket. I went one day without a purse ~ just loaded a few things in my pockets ~ it was so free-ing. Kind of like no panty hose in the summer, if that makes sense.

Yes, I usually still have my full resort mug with me or a bottle of water.

I would love to go bagless myself but my OCD would kick in and I'd constantly be checking my pockets to make sure my wallet was still there!

Well, that was my earlier point. The op mentioned the bag check, and the fanny pack needs to be checked, its really just a bag. Its just a type of bag, like a backpack, or shoulder bag, but for your tummy/fanny.

Cargo shorts for your DH. He'll be an oversized walking version of your purse...that's what my fiancee does. I just end up digging out her chapstick every 15 minutes and passing it over :)

The last few trips we took, we do the same thing. One year DH actually got stopped and checked because he had a "bulging pocket".

I'm wanting to go bagless to the parks. DH would be thrilled if we could by-pass the bag check line. I still want to take:

sunglasses: wear on my head or on my face
sm. camera: pocket or carry
ap, dde, room key, id: small wallet in pocket ?
cell phone: pocket
lipstick: pocket
sm. package of Rx: pocket
sm. pkg of wipe: pocket
rain jacket/poncho: disposable: it could go in pocket OR

How do you go bagless?

A few years ago DH bought all of us a big wallet type thing with a string on it to wear around our necks. It is good sized. I was able to keep my cell phone (I have a smaller phone), mytickets, money, and we were even able to fold up the park map put it in there. My husband found them in the travel/luggage aisle at WalMart.

I just like not having to keep up with a backpack. Most rides you have to take your packback off and I always worry about leaving it. If I don't have one, I don't have to worry about it.

We aren't always able to go bagless but I always enjoy it when we can.:thumbsup2
