OK..so we all know that being a mom means we think that our kids are the best. But I am always realistic when it comes to my kids and I never push them or try to make them the best.. only that they do their best.
Some of you might have seen my daughters art work that she did a few weeks back that I posted. Well one of them was getting honored tonight on the local level by the PTA reflections program. We went to the viewing tonight at one of the local schools and I stood around Sarahs work listening to people talk about it as they walked by. Every person who walked by was amazed and had nothing but the best things to say. They all called their friends/relatives over to look. I was so proud..almost bursting.
When we went in for the awards ceremony we sat for 45 minutes listening to the announcer talk about each childs work. She called their name, the name of the art work and what each child had to say about it. When they (finally) got to the last category which was Visual Arts High School Level, the lady called 4 peoples names and gave the spiel about each one (there were 8 kids being honored) then asked for applause and acted as if that was the end. Then she realized she had missed some kids (including Sarah) and hurridly called their names all at once, never telling the name of the art work or anything about it and hurried them off the stage as soon as they all got up there. Sarah ended up with an "Award of Merit" when the other kids got "Awards of Accomandation". Sarah is the type of girl who NEVER thinks she is better than anyone else, always wants other people to get in front of her and is very complimentary of everyone else. When she got back to her seat I could tell that she was upset. Upset that the announcer didnt say anything about her art and also upset (though she didnt really admit it) that she didn't get a higher award. As we were leaving 4 people came up to us and commented that they thought the speaker was rude and could not believe that Sarah didnt get a higher award.
Now I am not saying that I think she was better than all the other kids... but listening to the comments clearly she deserved more than just "runner up". Especially when compared to the ones that got the higher awards. Very few people commented on any of those pieces. Frankly a lot of the high school entries could easily have been done by grade school kids. But mostly I upset that the lady simply dismissed the final 4 kids without saying anything about their work. It was SUCH a huge disappoinment to sit there for 45 minutes and then have that happen...
Thank you for letting me vent.
(Again..... I know all moms think their kids are the best.... But Sarah was so hurt and she NEVER gets hurt when others do better than her...)
This is the piece (partially cut off because it did not all fit on the scanner)

Forget about the awards and start working on a gallery showing. Stunning work.
for her, people can be so thoughtless sometimes.
