Bad Experience at the Art Awards Tonight

Sorry this happened and I know how you feel. When Travis earned his Masters in Scenic design for the theatre (finally!) we drove to Detroit for the awards ceremony. Well, apparently, if your son or daughter wasn't a performer they didn't get recognized...AT ALL.

We got to hear glowing reviews of all the actors and actresses and directors but the scenic designers, costumers and lighting designers were totally ignored.

We drove 90 miles one way to watch other parents glow with pride. I was in tears. Didn't seem to bother my son all that much though.

I'm very proud of your daughter. I hope she isn't feeling too sad about this.

Last year I entered a quilt in a competition. I worked so hard at it and was proud of my work. It was the best I've ever done. I didn't get anything from where I had sent it. Everyone I showed the quilt to thought for sure I'd win some sort of ribbon. It was mailed back to me with a note thanks for entering. I was so very disappointed that I had spend every day before work on it, after work on it and my weekends. I devoted quite a lot of time to complete it on time. Still in the end it was not good enough for them.

I think my husband and children were more disappointed than me.

The next spring I entered that same quilt in a larger quilt show. Mostly because they write up a list of where you need to improve and where they give you points on or take off. To my amazement, I won 2 ribbons. One for each quilt I entered. You could've scraped me off the ceiling when I found out. At that point I never dreamed I could win a ribbon.

Like anything else, it's all in WHO does the judging. If its parents in the school system, unless your part of the "group" I doubt if you have a chance. I'm not sure where you live but I doubt if it would make a difference. When you get a group that are in it together,-unless you toot your own horn, you won't get far. I think your daughter has come up against that clique (sp?) she's not part of it so the recognition she deserves won't be there either.

It's a hard lesson to learn at any age. She has great talent, and it's obvious she loves what she does, I do too, so I can understand. I quilt because it is my passion, not for the ribbons or fame but it's just what I do.

This past fall, I was asked to enter my 2 quilts in another show. I declined. I had my write up and my red ribbon, that was more than enough for me, why take a chance at another disappointment. I'll work on my technique and improve my skills and do what I love the most, just make quilts!

I would in a nice way let the woman know, so maybe it won't happen again. Unfortunately it is one of those stinky life lessons. My son didn't get a band award last year and not to get into details but his friend got a chorus award and he quit the choir in January. I let the Principal and the band teacher know (of course each blamed it on the other), they said I wasn't the first parent to complain. I'm hoping it won't happen again when my son reaches sixth grade. BTW the picture is beautfiul. She is lucky to have such talent.
