Bad DCL experience... Do I need a new hobby?

I got a email recently from somebody who'd visited my web site prior to her cruise. She needed to vent about how bad an experience she had... and suggested perhaps I should get a new hobby. What do you think?

Dave - we just returned from our Disney cruise and have renamed it the Disney Madness. My hat is off to you if you had a great time.

This was one of the worst travel experiences of my life. I have been traveling since I was 3 months old with my parents and have spent 19 years working in marketing for premier companies like Four Seasons, Hyatt Hotels, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and Cunard. I have never seen a more mediocre product in my life.

I am not sure if when you sailed the ship was full but our sailing was and the staff was sour and worn out, food horrible, kids program extremely poor and not equipped to handle 700 kids onboard, plus the scheduling for the late dinner literally conflicted with seeing the characters and having dinner.

The best is Disney gave our luggage to another woman and it was expressed checked in on Delta flight to South Carolina. Disney did nothing to help us get it back, I had to race around the airport on Saturday and tell Delta that they were in violation of the TSA and FAA (our bags belong to no one yet they were checked in!) I have a disability in my left leg and my knee gave out so I wound up in a wheel chair before we left Orlando.

Except for the adorable entertainment and a wonderful cabin attendant, I think the product was one poorly run. I am writing a letter to Disney re the numerous glitches (big to small like the fact I could not even get a piece of fruit at a tropical buffet - the staff had a "no" mentality and the customer was always wrong!).

My husband ordered chocolate covered strawberries and they came with mold on them on the day of departure and we entered the ship at noon due to my disability. They would not even take this charge off our bill!

The best was guest relations, which told me that I don't understand hospitality. For someone to actually utter those words certainly indicates the lack of training by Disney - how insulting (it doesn't matter if I have been in the industry or not - you just don't say that to someone!)

My daughter was injured in the kids program and they didn't page us - I think that is a pretty simple request. Yet when she was bored b/c no one interacted with her they immediately paged us!

Our wait staff constantly got lost in the kitchen and we never got our food before 10pm at night let alone a refill on a glass of water. They were constantly remote and unavailable. They told us they thought Americans were fat slobs! Can you imagine! I am actually slender - but again an inappropriate expression! The best was the waitperson that told us that the staff has orgies. Who needs to know this!

Poor you! I am dumping this lousy vacation on you! I saved all of my Navigators, etc. but honestly think you need to pick a new hobby. This ship is not worth you efforts.

Staff was completely unpolished and lack professionalism! It is always nicer to be away than home, but the glitches just ruined my x0th birthday celebration at sea (I had to even ask for my celebrating pin!) and my daughter could never meet the characters b/c the lines were so long and they would be late and then the shows would start...It was like a mad dash from hell to catch our breath. All I wanted to do was sit down and every time I did I was paged that our daughter who actually loves day camp here in CT (9am to 6pm) needed to be collected.

There is so much more that went wrong.... I was so looking forward to this escape and we couldn't wait to end the cruise. Anyway... my two cents' worth.

WOW..... everything went wrong for her.... things that make you go Hmmmm.......

Please DON'T get a new hobby, we refer to your site constantly and have learned so much from you.

No, Dave you don't need a new hobby. Unfortunately, not everyone has a magical experience with DCL! I'm glad what we do.

I agree with Jeanny. How can so much bad stuff happen to one family? And why did she feel like she had to vent to you? Your information helped me so much last year when we cruised. Please don't get a new hobby.:D

The best was the waitperson that told us that the staff has orgies.

Dave - could you please research this activity and prepare a report (with pictures) asap...

The chocolate covered strawberries had mold on them and they wouldn't take them off the bill? The crew has orgies and brags to the passengers? The waitstaff said all Americans are fat slobs to an American? She says, "can you imagine?" Well no I can't and frankly I don't buy it!

I wonder why she sent this to you. I guess her attitude was "I hate this and you like it, so you will listen to my rant!" As for your hobbies, I feel I have as much right to make suggestions to you as this woman, which is to say none. I will say that I enjoy your site, though. Thanks.

It's apparent that this person is not a good fit with DCL, but I have serious doubts about some of the comments she attributed to crew members. I've never had experiences like she describes from places where I felt they had poor customer service. I have never been treated in a way that even approached rudeness on 7 DCL cruises. Anyway, thanks for posting this. I needed a good laugh this afternoon.

I'm still trying to figure out how the late dinner "literally conflicted with having dinner".

OH MY GOODNESS! What cruise was she on, did she say? My kids got TIRED of seeing the Characters! Now, I must say we never "lined up" to see them because they were always around! We did not need autographs because we dropped off the kids t-shirts at GS to be signed.

She was told he could not have a piece of fruit????We had fruit morning, noon and night! Not to mention the BOWL of cherries the wait staff brought the kids each night!

"The staff had a "no" mentality and the customer was always wrong!" I think this complaint was the hardest to belive. What the heck was she asking for that she had to be told "no"??

Dave, PLEASE do not get another hobby. We love your site!

First - DON't get a new hobby. You can't believe how often I've referred to your website. Just yesterday I went there to look at hotels near Orlando airport. Didn't think I was going to be staying near the Orlando airport - but as luck would have it - we are - and sure enough - you had info there on it that I'd never checked out before.

My favorite part -

The best was the waitperson that told us that the staff has orgies

Oh please...I can hear this conversation "just happening" during the normal course of serving dinner. "And, how was your dinner tonight? Oh - the food was terrible. Hmmm...thats probably because all the staff was occupied." And then he tells them how they were occupied? Yeah, right...Like someone wouldn't have spit out their water/soda/wine/beverage of choice/ onto the table and then marched off to complain. I guess all the other people, who didn't understand hospitality, just sat there and nodded and said to each other "Oh, so THAT explains why the Vichyssoise was cold."

I am sorry but it sounds like baloney to me.....
no cruise is perfect but no DISNEY cruise I have been on was like that.. sounds like someone who wants something ......how sad. :(

I'm wondering if this woman needs a DSM-IV diagnosis...

Don't you DARE get a new hobby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I rely on you Dave...and if you get a new hobby, then I will have to get a new hobby and I don't want a new hobby!

Sorry for her....but tell her to get off your back or she will have to deal with ME! And I can be one Grumpy Goofy when someone messes with my DCL-DIS addiction.

P.S. Thanks for all the info you have provided to so many of us in the past few years! Keep it up!

With any luck, this person will not sail on my cruise.

I've known people who every trip to a resteraunt will be a problem, and nothing is ever right.

Notice the use of the past tense "Known".

My favorite part of the "rant" above was:

I had to race around the airport on Saturday and tell Delta that they were in violation of the TSA and FAA (our bags belong to no one yet they were checked in!)

You know the Airlines LOVE to have amateurs tell them what federal regulations they are violating. They have enough to worry about with Shrews like this coming along....

Dave please don't give up your hobby. As a matter of fact I think you should devote even more time to it and give us daily DCL updates! ;) Your site has been extremely helpful!

It sounds like this person wouldn't be happy on vacation anywhere! I don't think the QE2 could have pleased her.
I wonder if she tipped the server that called her and all americans fat slobs. Thank goodness she got her celebration pin....I could only imagine the fury she would have laced out on some poor CM!

I have to agree that I think it is a little far-fetched. I half expected to see a (Ha!Ha! Fooled you!) at the end of note.

I wouldn't even begin to know how to comment to such a writer.

I think your hobby is very rewarding to everyone.

Keep up the good work! Your information was so valuable when we cruised, we couldn't have done it without you!!!!

My DH is a GM for a steakhouse--there are "professional complainers" who actually do this everywhere for free product/meals/vacations, etc. He had a lady that emailed a 2nd complaint to corporate EXACTLY one year from the date she emailed her 1st complaint. Of course on her first one she received $100 in promo gift cert.--but w/ the 2nd--not as lucky. She must've had a schedule of when and where to complain each year and didn't realize that computers track these things and send off red flags when duplicate email addresses show up!!! It makes me sick to see people con businesses out of freebies! Because what is free for them--costs everyone else in the long run.

Buckaroo's Dad - Don't you want those pictures (I mean reports) in braille? :smooth:

Dave - please dont give up your hobby. Youve been extremely helpful both times we've planned this cruise.
When our cruise got "rearranged" our itinerary went from Eastern to Western - gotta plan, ya know?!
