I ventured solo on the most recent Podcast Backstage Magic trip. It was an amazing trip. This report will be my first trip report. I hope you enjoy! I'll apologize in advance for the pictures...not the best camera.

Adventures by Disney: Backstage Magic 7/25/10 – 7/31/10
Day 1

My day started with a short drive from Covington to Hartsfield (Atlanta airport). I arrived at 8:15 and made it through security in record time even though the guy at security gave me a hard time. As I was waiting for my things to come out of the machine, I was told that the x-ray machine “was not there for my viewing pleasure”. He then proceeded to search my bag and give me a hard time about not having my bottles in a zip lock bag. At this point, I just wanted him to throw away everything and let me go on my way. He eventually allowed me to keep all of my stuff after a nice lecture. After arriving at the gate about an hour before boarding, I pulled out my phone to check facebook and the boards. After a few facebook exchanges, I discovered that I was on the same flight as Lisa and Paul (they had a layover). I was sitting just a few feet away and didn’t know it. We had a nice chat before boarding the plane. I don’t know if I was just anxious to arrive or what but that flight seemed to take five days. I tried to distract myself with my iPad and ended up playing Angry Birds and obsessively checking facebook for updates from the other ABDers arriving in CA.

After a nice ride from the airport, we arrived in Hollywood. Checking in at the hotel was a breeze with the help of Michael and Dean (our guides for the week). I was told that my room was not ready but would be ready soon. Since I had not had anything to eat, I ventured out into the Hollywood & Highland complex to find food.

During lunch, Dean called to let me know that my room was ready and I could pick up the key from him. Arriving at the check-in area, I discovered many more from the group had gathered. I was very excited to meet Pete, Walter, Kristen, Nichole, Jeff, Stacy, Rob, and Mike (sorry if I left someone out…lots of people to remember on the first day). After a brief encounter with my fellow travelers, I headed up to my room for a much needed nap. I was not sleeping very long when a bellman knocked at the door. My ABD goodies had arrived!!! That duffle bag would come in handy (more later…). I was once again sleeping when Dean called to say that our dinner had been moved from 5:45 to 5:00. Ok, no napping for me. I freshened up and headed out to meet the group.

As the group gathered for dinner, everyone made their rounds introducing themselves. Michael and Dean had each of the individual groups pose in front of the Twist sculpture for the first of many ABD sign pictures. Rob handed out journals that he had made and personalized for everyone. What a great surprise! Thanks Rob! Pete and Walter had Dis Unplugged visors for everyone (personalized with the ABD trip and date). Nice! Our dinner was held in a banquet room at the hotel. The food was good but we didn’t get any type of choice. Everyone had chicken, potatoes, and vegetables (can’t remember what). I’m sure they made some type of effort for those with dietary needs but everyone at my table had the same meal. During dinner, Michael and Dean gave instructions for the week to come. A trivia game took place with the participants being John, Rob, Pam, and Wayne. Everyone put in an admirable showing but John ended up on top. He won a photo album while all of the other participants received Vinylmation figures.

Also at dinner, Jen distributed candy that she and John had brought from Switzerland. She also made a special effort to get some sugar free chocolate for Pete. Pete was nice enough to share and I have to say I almost like that version better than the fully loaded chocolate. After passing out some more ABD goodies, Michael and Dean said good night.

After dinner, I joined Mike, Rob, Pam, Mary, Anne, and Alan for a stroll down Hollywood Boulevard. We found one of Walt’s stars.

We returned to the lobby of the hotel for a visit with Nancy Johnson (Disneyland Correspondent). Nancy gave us some tips and answered questions about our visit to Disneyland. Since it was pretty late (I was still on east coast time), I then headed to bed. Our day was going to start early the next morning.

Oh, cool! This is a great start to your trip report! I'm looking forward to more. I followed Pete's reports on Facebook, so it'll be nice to see some faces and get more details!

Sayhello

Awesome report - can't wait to see/hear more! We leave next Sunday on the same trip and are so excited to go!

Woo hoo! Great start! I also think your pictures are fantastic! When did you get that empty photo of Hollywood Highland?

What is it with the security folks who love to give us a hard time? Grrrrr!

I believe the empty photo of Hollywood & Highland was taken on Monday morning before breakfast. I walked out in hopes of getting a shot of the Hollywood sign but there was too much fog to get a good picture.

:thumbsup2Excellent trip report, Christy! Now it sounds like our group was having trouble on the flight out.

We can't wait till the recap of day 2! Wonderful!!:grouphug:

I think your photos are good - and I was wondering how you got the whole Hollywood & Highland area vacant too! :thumbsup2

Day 2

The group met in front of Twist to begin our first full day of the adventure. We walked through Hollywood & Highland to get to our first destination. Along the way, Michael and Dean pointed out the Kodak Theater where the Oscars are filmed explaining how the store fronts are covered during the taping. The stars don’t need to be seen walking past a random store front on their way to the most important award show of the year! Our first destination was Grauman’s Chinese Theater. We took time to explore the hand/foot prints. I found several of my favorites. Note: Pete and Mike had their large “prosumer” type video cameras. Due to some type of rule, they had to stay on the sidewalk when we were at Grauman’s and couldn’t film.

After Grauman’s, we headed to the Disney Soda Fountain for breakfast. Due to reviews from the last podcast trip, I stayed away from the eggs and ordered the Mickey waffles with sausage. No complaints! During breakfast, the manager of the Soda Fountain gave us some history on the location. He also challenged one of our group to a Disney trivia contest in order to when a prize for the group. Rob stepped up to the challenge and won the group 20% off of all merchandise that day. I remember Jeff stepping up and answering a challenging question but can’t remember the actual question (Jeff? Stacy?). We had a small amount of time to shop but then were off to our next destination…next door to the El Capitan.

Rob and Mike...as Rob was participating in Trivia

At the El Capitan, we were treated to popcorn. I have to say that it was not too appetizing right after breakfast. In the theater, the organist played a couple of pieces of music for us. We were also treated to the curtain show that happens before each movie showing. We were then allowed to go up on stage. We explored the lighting, the lifts, etc. more closely. Several from our group had already decided that they would return that night for a showing of Toy Story 3 and to visit the play zone.

Next, we again walked next door to the studio where Jimmy Kimmel Live is shot. This visit was relatively short consisting of tours of the studios, sound, editing, and green rooms (I hope that I am remembering that correctly). We were treated to some ghost stories regarding the old Masonic temple. After a quick look at the outdoor stage, we were loaded onto the bus for the first time. Does anyone remember the bus driver’s name? I’m so awful!!

During the drive, we explored Hollywood a bit driving past the Chateau Mormont, the Comedy Store, etc. We also caught a glimpse of the modest house that belonged to Marilyn Monroe. After about 30 minutes, we arrived at the Jim Henson Company. I’ve always been fascinated by puppetry so was really looking forward to this stop. After a “comfort” break otherwise known as a bathroom break (I picked that up from the guides and think it is hilarious so intend to use it in everyday life from now on.), we proceeded into a small theater to watch a video created for the ABD groups. I won’t go into detail but will say that it is extremely funny! We were then lead to a large sound stage to watch a quick video on the history of the Jim Henson Company (it used to be the Charlie Chaplin Studios) and on the latest style of puppetry (computerized). It is fascinating that they are finding ways to computerize everything. We made a quick stop in a conference room where I thought we were going to sit through a presentation. We actually stopped in to look at the painting that is on the wall. It is a floor to ceiling painting that contains just about every Muppet. It is gorgeous and we had quite the time picking out all of our favorites. Our guide at Jim Henson, Grant, then took us into the loft where we explored some of the puppets on display. He also gave us a demonstration on computerized puppetry. Fascinating!! Before going into the loft, we were asked to lock up our cameras as well as any phone that had a camera feature. After picking up our cameras, we were served lunch on the lot. I had the cheese burger…not my favorite but it wasn’t bad. It was then off to the main office for a photo session with a familiar green friend as well as one of the many Emmy’s that belong to the Jim Henson Company. Our last stop was back in the large sound stage. Grant demonstrated how they film the puppets from up high so that the puppeteers can walk below the camera out of sight. Stacy and Paul were brave enough to try their hand at puppeteering (is that a word?). They were both great. Grant is so quick on his feet though. He had us all cracking up. As we were saying goodbye to Grant and his panda puppet (name?), we had a chance to take individual pictures with the duo…and yes, Grant, that picture will eventually end up on Facebook.

After another bus ride, we arrived at Griffith Park for a visit at Walt’s barn. As everyone knows, Walt was fascinated by trains. His barn has been transported to the park and now contains quite a bit of train memorabilia. The foundation does have some things that actually belonged to Walt but some of the memorabilia is only examples of what Walt might have owned. The volunteers that work at the barn really know their stuff though. You can tell they are dedicated to maintaining the site and their foundation. If you were following Pete’s posts on Facebook, you saw that the majority of the group went for a train ride. If you have not seen it, find his DISers on parade video. It is hilarious.

Jen, Pam, and Mary on the train

On the way back to the hotel, Michael and Dean let us know that they had tickets for the taping of Jimmy Kimmel that night. John, Jen, Anne, Alan, Alex, and I all decided that we would go to the taping instead of attending the Toy Story 3 showing at the El Capitan. We had a little time to rest and freshen up before we had to meet the guides outside of the JKL studio. If you have the chance, I would recommend going to a taping. Jimmy Kimmel is great but it is interesting to see the taping as well as the audience interaction.

After JKL, Anne, Alan, and I stopped by the Soda Fountain again. I had not eaten dinner so I grabbed a grilled cheese while Anne and Alan enjoyed ice cream. I bought a couple of souvenirs using our 20% discount, we made a quick stop by CVS, and then it was back to the hotel. Since we were leaving Hollywood the next day, I took the time to pack up my bags that night. The next day was Walt Disney Studios, Imagineering, and Disneyland!!! I didn’t want anything to impede our leaving as soon as possible the next morning.

What a great report!:thumbsup2 Your pictures are just wonderful! We had Grant for our tour too. He was just too funny!:rotfl2:

Can't wait to read more!

Your trip reporting is great!! You are capturing every moment so beautifully and we are enjoying every word. Your pictures and captions are awesome. The question at the soda fountain was, "Which attraction was started in 1963 but was delayed due to the NY World's Fair?" It was the Haunted Mansion.

We can't wait to read about day 3!!

Yahoo! Great report! The panda puppet was DJ and our bus driver's name was Don! :)

Great report so far Christy! I feel like I am back on this trip already!

Cristy, this is excellent. You have such a good memory about the events and details. Your pictures came out great. Thanks so much! Keep 'em coming.

Hi Christy, We just got home last night and I am enjoying reading your report. It was a great trip. Thanks for recreating it!!! Pam
