Try Ogio, great backpacks that last for ever, super quality! They cost a bit more but you can find some good deals. Very stylish (important stuff when your in HS), they're big with the extreme sports set. I have one (the model is Mastermind) that my Husband and I use when we go to Disney. The thing has a ton of pockets, a file folder for our planning materials, a laptop sleeve, iPod pocket (or just electronics) and a lifetime warranty!
Ditto this!!! I had an LLBean backpack through HS and college also (but it was older and before they had the Deluxe version). Lasted forever and LLBean stands behind their products. If the zipper breaks they will pay to repair it or replace it with a new backpack!
Jansport! They make all different grades and prices. If you get one of the heavy duty expensive ones it will hold more than they can carry. My DD's was regularly 50+ pounds the last 3 years and she carried it everyday and it looks none the worse for wear (dirty but she will never empty it so I can wash it) I believe they have a replacement guarantee also.
I totally agree with this. My kids got their backpacks in 1st grade and my older one got a new backpack in 9th grade and the 7th grader is still using hers.
Yes, I agree, they take them back, no questions asked for a lifetime.
My son did, however, beg for a Northface, and I must say, i have no complaints with that one either. But I have used the LL Bean with the older kids, and had to replace one once, no problems.
L.L. Bean, my deluxe has lasted for years. My Lands End laptop one has also gotten plenty of use.
I also have a Nike that I used for the last turn around in school. I could haul a lot in that one. Granted I needed to have a water bottle pocket and a laptop sleeve--that was the only reason I bought it originally. But it's now my go to over the L.L. Bean.
It is important that the backpacks be well constructed with both shoulder and waist straps to support the weight the students carry. Carrying by one strap only may look cool but is hard on the pack and student.

DD says North Face is definitely the brand of choice on her university campus right now.
It was Jansport when I was in school... does that date me?
NF also offers a lifetime warranty, but I've never needed to use it, so no feedback on that.
Just one suggestion... if your boys are heading to college after high school, you might want to think about a good laptop backpack now. DD has a NF Surge and says it works great. I wouldn't classify it as a budget buy though.
Eddie Bauer also guarantees their backpacks. If you have the receipt, you get the price you paid. We didn't have our receipt on a discontinued model (we had it for 6 years!) and they gave us the lowest sale price as a credit toward another backpack. I kept that receipt just in case
LL Bean Turbo Transit Pack! It has plenty of room and a compartment in the bottom for gym clothes/sneakers. http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/48014?from=SR&feat=sr
Prior to this backpack, my son was wearing backpacks out within months. He's had this one for two years, and it still ooks like brand new.
Definately LL Bean!! and you can get their initials on them. My kids backpacks have lasted a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time and are still kickin
Oldest DS has a Wenger Swiss Army Laptop Backpack and it holds a lot and has held up incredibly well. I got it for "free" at Staples last year when they had that buy the backpack get a Staples GC equal to the price of the back pack sale. I paid $80 for it (which was 50% off suggested retail - not that I believe they really sell for $160) and got the full $80 in a GC. It's holding up so well I figure we can get at least another year out of it. I know a lot of people like a LL Bean backpack, but around here they are just not "cool" and the HS kids won't carry them.
I second the Swiss Army brand. LLbean and lands End are good for upto 8th gr. Afterwards you need a super duper one with a padded compartment for a netbook etc. I was hesitant to spend the money but it is so nice even the kid mentioned the difference!
