Back to School Bargain Thread

I usually buy the jumbo pencils at Target, but not in the school supply area. I usually find them in the office supply area.

Never would have thought of the office supply area! Guess I'll be forced to shop at Target. Darn! :rotfl::woohoo:

Click on the item on the ad page - on the popup window, it says "1 cent each, with minimum $5 purchase".

I kid you not, but it doesn't say that when I click the item. Maybe the min. purchase is a regional thing?! I know that different regions, even within the state of NJ have different sales when it comes to Staples. Black Friday, for instance, had different specials depending on what part of the state you live in. Would have to think the same would apply to the country.

I was pleasantly surprised that my DS did not need much for HS. Like you said, pens, pencils, highlighters. Some want a binder, some don't. His HS has checkout calculators for all the math classes, so we didn't have to buy the expensive one. When he has homework he needs one for, we use an online scientific calculator or mine circa 1990, LOL. Still works.....

My friend's son is entering his sophomore year. She was ecstatic at how much less he needed for school. Pen, pencil, paper pretty much covers it. And the computer, but he had that already. Now the sports costs are a different story! lol

That's good news, I may actually be able to buy all of the supplies for under $60 this year for all 5 kids if she doesn't need an expensive calculator, I have a lot of supplies left over from previous years. I think she'll make up for it with the clothes she needs, however, she outgrew everything in her closet by the end of June :sad2:.

I have a DD entering high school this year, can anyone give me an idea of what kind of supplies I can expect to need? I already have the basics: pens, pencils, paper, highlighters. I can't think if there's anything else. I'm anticipating a calculator, but last year the school supplied them for the classroom so I don't know yet.

Luckily high schoolers don't need a lot of supplies! However, I have found it is best to keep things like crayons, markers, scissors, glue sticks, etc. at home in a box because it seems like they are always doing projects or presentations. I also keep some of those posterboards (the smaller ones that are like 16 x 20 AND the bigger poster board type) on hand. There is nothing like your kid telling you at 10 pm that they have a poster due tomorrow. :headache: Having the posterboard on hand has saved me many late night trips. I usually get them when Walgreens has a special or coupon on the item.

If you have girls, they might want a locker mirror. I also got them a locker holder thing - kind of like a little basket that is magnetic and sticks to the locker door for them to put a small bottle of hand saniter in. Also, locker shelves are nice to stack books and stuff plus leave room to put in winter boots, etc.

Locker shelves and a locker mirror are a lifesaver for the high school crowd....especially if they use contact lenses. The shelves really help keep it all organized so they can grab and go between classes.
Our D uses a ton of 3x5 cards. Seriously thousands of those things. I buy them during the sales. Also Sharpie highlighters....they are required to have 7 or so different colors for their English classes. I will buy at least two sets during the sales, she uses them all the time.

Starting tomorrow, Walgreens has a coupon on posterboard :) 3 for $1 i believe. Don't recall if the coupon is in the regular circular or on the printable online page.

Hi!
I just checked the target circular and they have Roseart markers, colored pencils or packs of gluesticks for .50 each. As a kindergarten teacher, I have found that the Roseart markers work well, so I will be sure to pick those up for my classroom. As far as the colored pencils,I will pass on the roseart brand.Actually I have not really found a brand that I like.
They also have packs of dry erase markers with the eraser on the cap, for 2.00 which is actually a great deal.

Thank-you for listing that out by store, that is very helpful!

Quick Walgreens question, I want to buy 6 packs of index cards there. The coupon says .39 limit 6. Do I need to have 6 Walgreens coupons to get them for that price or do I just use one? (sorry if that's a dumb question, I don't shop Walgreens very often)

There are some good deals in the ads this week. I'm going to be heading out soon because I've got about 3 stores to hit.
Staples: If I can reach the $5 minimum purchase, I will buy pocket folders 1 cent each, 8pk of pencils 1 cent each.
If there isn't much else to buy at Staples, I will hold off on the items there.

Walmart: sharpies 2 for $1, subject dividers $2.50 pk

Walgreens: filler paper 2 for $1, pencils 24 pk 79 cents, pocket folders with prongs 8 for $1, 3x5index cards 100 count 39 cents, jumbo glue stick 99cents.

I also need to go to Target for non-school items, so I'll check the prices there.

No such thing as a dumb question! You only need one coupon.:)

Thanks! I'll be using your list too lol

Guys if I remember correctly, filler paper should be much cheaper than WM's .75 or Walgreen's 2 for a $1.00. If you wait a few more weeks; it should be .20 or .15 per pack. ;).

K-Mart has 150 ct pack notebook paper (wide and college ruled) for $.50. this is the cheapest price i've seen. walgreens has a 130 ct pack for the same price.
