Last week was a kind of all over the place week...It had its highs......and its lows......

It sort of felt like the week with multiple personality disorder and it was kind of hard to know how and what to feel on a day to day basis...

On a positive note...

We celebrated both Alice's and Hatter's Birthdays -they are two days apart and Hatter and my anniversary..., so literally we had Hatter's b-day, day off, Alice's Birthday, our anniversary...

Hatter and I are actually celebrating our anniversary this weekend...(we are going away to Alexandria, Va for the weekend...) and we booked and put half deposit down on our apt. in Paris for March...

On a difficult note...

Alice is now 15...(ooops I have to change her in my siggie...she is a real teenager now...(14 is kind of real but with 15-there just is no doubt about it...and then I was getting kind of maudlin that she'll be going off to college in 4 years...

But this was just silly and emotional on my part...

My bigger issue was that...

I just had an intuitive sense that something was off at school with Rabbit...(he's doing really well academically...but when I'd ask about who he was playing with...well didn't feel right...

(I had requested a meeting several weeks ago in which I had emphasized how pleased I was with Rabbit's in class work but how important the Social Component is...and I sort of felt well...a little blown off, a little discounted...I mean if he's good in class and he's doing ok- well then everything's ok right...(I mean I'm just a neurotic mom-right...?wellllllll......

I get an email last week from the new school counselor basically informing me that while David is happily running about chasing leaves he is not making very successful inroads into engaging kids in play at recess......(Reading between the lines...she doesn't understand his diagnosis...I don't know what her experiences have been...)

So for the heck of it...I decide to go into school and have lunch with David and hang out for recess...to make a long story short...his classroom is a little organized slice of heaven...but when you get down to the lunchroom...it's the 2nd grade version of Lord of the Flies...

I wound up with a whole variety of kids trying to sit at our table-basically because there was an interested adult to engage...and looking around...quite a few of these kids could use some kind of support/engagement at lunch...

Recess was a interesting bag...I started a game of tag with my son-who I realized didn't get the rules...and after I explained it- we played it for at least 15-minutes with about 4-5 other kids joining in...

Ugghhhhh---what I've come to realize is that since some of David's prime needs socially aren't in the classroom...its in the lunchroom and the playground where its all unstructured and a free for all...He could use some tools/scaffolding/basically some help navigating the social world...(I think it's just easier to make your point when you are talking about a verbal learning disorder as opposed to a social learning disorder...)

The big question for me is how I'm going to convince not just the teacher (who is really pretty good in the classroom) but the administrators that the stuff that happens in the lunchroom and playground is part of the bigger picture...so I've basically been spending my free time trying to wrap my brains around this...

I'm not sure that this free for all system actually works for a variety of kids...anyone with not just Asperger's but ADD or any sensory issues or even just kids who are a little introverted...it seems that there could/should be a better way...

so I probably need to propose somethings...that aren't going to cost a lot of money...I have the flexibility to go into school several times (twice) a week but I'd need a buy in and support...what to do...what to do...

Anyway...that's why I've had a massive headache for the last week and I'm hoping to try to improve it...

and I feel guilty to be going away with Hatter but it is for our anniversary and in a lot of ways... I think its really a good idea for everyone...(Rabbit is basically thrilled to spend two nights at his grandparents...it'll be 2 1/2 days of a fun fest for him...


Ugghh...this whole post sounds so Dr. Phil or something...but it was at least cathartic...

Disboards...much cheaper than therapy and a heck of a lot more fun...(Unofficial slogan...)

and Now Back to the Regularly Scheduled Program...

I've been reading along but have yet to comment and this post really caught my eye. The same thing happens where I teach. There are children who have trouble engaging socially for various reasons. Each teacher does lunch duty once a week. The teachers on lunch duty try to arrange games/activities in the playground so it's not just a half hour of insanity. Since it's a small school and every teacher knows every kid, even if they're not in his/her class, we try to encourage the kid that's not playing with anyone to join a game and help the child initiate the social interaction. Are there teachers outside with the children? If so, maybe they can help with his. I hope the school is open to working with you

I totally understand what you mean about the cafetria being like a second version of lord of the flies! I try to get to the school to have lunch with the kids each a few time a year.It's crazy!!! What I hate the most is the catty little girls! YIKES!! Teenage meaness at 7 years old

DS is a little social butterfly and everyone, including teachers and stuff adore him. DD is very shy and sometimes it concerns me. I was a shy kid and I know how lonely it van be sometimes. She really seems to be blossoming this year though! It's amazing and exciting to see!!

Hi Patricia.... I'm sorry you've had a tough week .

I agree, just the ability to write about rough patches can be so therapeutic. Getting thoughts out of your head and written down is almost like a cleansing of the brain at times, at least for me . The support in return here on the DIS is wonderful and exactly what you need.... even just to know you have people in your corner.

I love the ideas put forward so far... a recess buddy, a group... very do-able, I think, with tremendous potential for all kids involved.

We've been waging our own battle the last few weeks with Ariana's school, and just recently came out the victor.

Keep it up.... you're a Mom... you know you can do it.

You say that he likes to swim? I met a mom at a swim meet who has a HS age son who has Asperger's, and he has done well over the years with competitive swimming. She has had him change clubs a few times due to different coaches, but she felt that the structure and the team-but-individual aspect was good for her son. And she mentioned that he was looking at some colleges that has programs for Asperger's students.

It was cute- a couple of CMs after looking at Rabbit shirt...asked Rabbit if he had been to the Jedi Academy and he was able to answer in the affirmative and mention that he had fought Darth Vader...and won...

David must have felt very important being able to tell the CMs about his victory over the Dark Side!

We rode Star Tours-it was even more fun now that Rabbit is into Star Wars...(Alice wasn't really ever as much into it although she definitely took more of an interest in the 2nd and 3rd episode of the Movies...the ones in which Anakin has grown up into a tall, handsome suitor to Padme...I have a really hard time watching these now that I know what happens to Anakin...)

It is just a tragic, tragic story -- thank goodness for Han Solo in the last three.

(I can't wait to see what the upgrade to the Star Tours ride will be like...the clips from the D23 Expo looked fabulous...)

Yes, it does -- the Star Wars nerds in our house (Connor and me ) are very excited!

I now have him with my finger puppet magnets of Washington, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt...(yes I am aware of my own nerdiness) it's my own little Mt. Rushmore set up-I have the Ewok taking the place of Thomas Jefferson until I find him...lol...

I love it! I want a finger puppet Mt. Rushmore on my fridge!

and out on the coffee table between the chairs and sofa I got my first look at the D23 magazine...Disney twenty three...I fell in love...not only was it lovely, glossy oversized magazine...there were some really great articles in it...lots of great articles on films, the parks, the muscials...hmmm...I wanted one...but they weren't selling it...it is one of the benefits of D23 membership...(foreshadowing...)

I have already decided I want a D23 membership for my birthday -- I will be letting Charles know about this shortly.

I just get such a kick out of the Sci Fi movie clips/cartoons in here...I think it is a really great slice of Americana...with the drive in theme and the burgers and the cars...etc...just fun...I always feel...well just relaxed here...

I adore the atmosphere at the Sci Fi! So much fun!

Okay, I totally want to respond to your response to me...but I have GOT to get to bed (and FYI, I did NOT do any exercise on Monday...we had torrential downpour...and I didn't do any today either. Major stress concerning my dog...so don't feel bad if you didn't either. MUST get going though... I must).

Anyway, I want to really comment, but it will have to wait until tomorrow, but I remembered something I wanted to say last time and forgot...about JM and FM. And the whole story.

The movies are so tragic that sometimes it breaks my heart to think about it, BUT don't you think it HAD to happen? I mean, Anakin really was "the chosen one" when it came down to it. He was the ONLY one who could over throw Palpatine. And if he hadn't chosen as he did, he may never had been able to do it. His whole story is just awful. It just kills me what happened to Padme. But that was the way the story had to go...for the betterment of humanity. And all that stuff.

Just had to get my .02 in.

I'll be back tomorrow with some real comments.

I just read your post on Rabbit fighting Darth Vader...and winning...and I have tears streaming down my face!!!!!!!!! Just thinking about it brings a huge, sappy grin to my face. What a perfect moment for him and you! And go Rabbit go! Fight that Vader!!!!

Sounds like a perfect meal to follow up the defeat of the dark side. We really enjoyed Sci Fi as well -despite a very squirmy 2 year old in the seats between us!

I'm sorry to hear about your rough week...I hope you are able to wrap your head around it all and get some clear thoughts that help the whole situation at school. I never liked recess as a child, I wanted structure - the "free for all" was a tad scary to me, and I never knew what to do with myself. Eventually I found a group of kids that just hung out on one end of the playground and that worked well! I knew where I was to go, and what to expect during our recess time. At our lunch room, we had to sit in the order in which we walked into the lunchroom and through the lunch line. So, if you wanted to sit by your friends, you had to arrange yourself in line that way. But there was no mob of kids or craziness, it was very orderly.

Anita -that is a great idea... and ironically-actually the counselor just had David and a classmate (David likes this guy-he's a nice kid) in her office today to have lunch...Great Minds... I actually like his teacher and I think the counselor is new and trying...I have a more administrative issue...

I did finish finish John Adams...I think that was one of the best historical mini-series I have ever seen and it is an owner...the last episode was so sad though......Poor Nabby and then Abigail...

Personally I think the school playground is a horrorfest for lots of kids...I wasn't particularly found of it myself...It will all work out one way or another...

I always feel better when I Dis...I think it should be included as part of a healthy life style like veggies and excercise...

This school is fairly large...the second grade alone has 4 classes of over 20-22 kids each...

What you are describing sounds ideal......a lot of kids for a whole host of reasons need help navigating lunch and recess...having an adult who engages with them and initiates interaction would be heavenly...

Our school has lunch/recess aides who as far as I can tell are primarily there to make sure there is no blood or broken bones...the teachers have their lunch at the time...and I can totally understand their need for a break...if only there was a way to train the aides to be able to be more engaged...and maybe figure out a way for one of the teachers to be out there once a week assuming they got their lunch at another time...I think that there has to be administrative support and its becoming clear to me that this "kind of thing" is not a priority when the principal is a bit consumed by test scores...

I'm actually looking at private schools also...now that we understand David's needs and he is doing so well academically....I think a small, very community oriented private school could be very good for him...I would definitely be seeking a place that has the kind of lunch/recess that you describe...

I hope you are able to make some progress with Rabbit's school. I so know what you mean about the playground/lunchroom. If my DD13 (anxiety, mood disorder, social issues) comes home from school upset about something that happened with the girls at school, you can bet it happened at lunch or on the bus (another unsupervised area). Keep us posted how things are progressing.

Sci Fi is just so much fun...I've been there now three times...and we always have a good time...

Aaawww...thanks about the good mom stuff......right back at you...just from the threads I've read I think that there are a lot of great moms hangind around here...maybe the Dis attracts us... (btw-I have great kids...makes it easy to be a good mom...)

Tell me about the little girls......in all fairness I do think its getting harder to just be a little kid... there is so much influence for them to be little mini teens at even 7 -the clothes, the tv shows, the toys even...with Em being 15 now-I've seen the gamit-the good, the bad & the ugly...

Enjoy your son's exuberance and your daughter will be just fine (I've used the work blossom to describe Em's development too)...I didn't think Emily was ever going to separate from my leg in kindergarten...-she was almost painfully shy...and believe me no one could ever accuse her of that now...although fortunately she has retained the ability to think before she acts which has been a very helpful quality as well as the ability to empathize with people who are more introverted..

Dis is a lot cheaper than therapy and more fun too...(btw I do have a great respect for therapists and many of them do awesome work...) A nice glass of wine, a book or a pedicure can be pretty theraputic too...

I hope everything is ok with Ariana...I was thinking of her the other day since we have the same favorite princess...Ms. Snow White...there is a ton of SW merchandise at the Disney store right now...there is actually this cute little cottage...hmmm...

Not going away this weekend unfortunately...FIL pulled his back...going to have to reschedule...that's why I'm not working right now...I've given myself carte blanche to relax and Dis for a while..

But its all good...the wheels in my brain are turning as we "speak" to plan some fun alternatives...

Awww...thanks for thinking of David...(You guys are awesome...I feel like I have this whole community of people looking at for/thinking about him...time for a group hug...

He LOVES the water...I have him taking swimming lessons and I think once he gets a little stronger...a swim team would be a fabulous thing for him to try out.....(I think it could really be an incredibly positive thing for him...).
Coaches are really important...( I have him signed up for two 2nd grade basketball programs-2 because I want to check out the coaching styles...the programs for basketball all seem to start in 2nd grade and out of all of the traditional team sports (football, hockey, soccer, baseball and basketball-basketball seems to interest him the most, followed by baseball (he's a little bit jazzed about the Phillies being in the series...)

But I could absolutely see him as a long term swimmer...

I have spent too much time contemplating the whole Star Wars saga...and yes Anakin was the key (chosen one) since he was Luke's father and LUke brought back the balance...

the thing is with Anakin...I don't think that the Jedi council dealt with him the right way...While I'm all pro Jedi and everything...along comes this child who has the most potential ever seen...he's had a rough childhood and was taken away from his mother...I think they could have been a little more flexible in their dealings with him...He had so much fear about losing Padme after losing his mother...he just couldn't think straight...I think that someone could have been a little more understanding about his emotions...instead of making him suppress them all the time...if they had dealt with them more openly he wouldn't have been as suseptible to Palpatine...& poor, poor Padme...awful...(OK my Star Wars geek moment over...

Hey Brooke-yeah the whole Vader thing still brings a smile to my face too...just think in not too many years Henry can be fighting Vader...but not yet...let him take his time growing up... (I just got the funniest image of Rastafari Henry taking on Vader...

Sci Fi is the best and really great for all ages...

It's funny...I think a lot of life is about finding your "tribe" the places and people who you feel comfortable with...as adults we can choose who we wish to be friends with/spend time with where as when your a kid...hopefully you'll find those people in the group you're assigned to...That's David's quest to find those people...(and mine to help him...)

I will check out the NAGC website...I've been so focused on the AS/I forget that sometimes the gifted component adds to the social issues as well..

It is sometimes tough to tell what issue is coming from where since he has the dual gift/AS diagnosis Also sometimes I just have to tell myself he's also a 7 year old boy... and 7 year old boys can be a bit like puppy dogs at time...cute as anything but a little unfocused and crazy...

I haven't eaten at Sci-Fi (yet), but your lunch sounds good!

I hope you are able to make some progress with Rabbit's school. I so know what you mean about the playground/lunchroom. If my DD13 (anxiety, mood disorder, social issues) comes home from school upset about something that happened with the girls at school, you can bet it happened at lunch or on the bus (another unsupervised area). Keep us posted how things are progressing.

Hey Denise,

I'm truly sorry about your DD...Having a 15 year old DD-I know where you're coming from...Middle School (outside the classroom-learning part) can be a horrorfest (I think Horrorfest is one of the words of the day) with the just plain "meanness" of some of the girls...Em's social issues and anxiety (and she did have anxiety issues) came for her earlier on...she is in really good place now...I'm sorry she doesn't go to your daughter's school...she's really great at looking at for younger girls...and she really despises a bully...or just plain "witchy" girls...she told me a couple weeks ago that sometimes she really doesn't like the way teenagers act...that they are self absorbed and silly...(well trust me she isn't a saint-but I thought that was pretty evolved for a 15 year old...)

If you ever need any info on anxiety or mood disorders-please pm me...been there-can help with that a bit...

Looks like Hatter and I are gong to have to postpone our weekend...FIL hurt his back and my inlaws aren't up to watching the children this weekend...but we will reschedule and to cheer myself up I'm going to decadently fiddle away some time Dising...

It is time to get this TR moving back along...I will post the rest of the Studios Day later today...so I can then move along to our next day which was spent exploring Kidani, eating at Sanaa for lunch and taking Rabbit and Alice to Pirates League, the Wave for Dinner and the Pirates and Pals cruise...(after the whole Jedi Academy thing...this was probably my all around favorite day...)

So time to get writing and finish up the Studios so we can move along...

First a cup of coffee and a little catching up on everyone else's TRs and PTRs and then finish up Studio's Day...

Sorry to hear about your FIL's back, and your postponed trip. At least you can reschedule it, so you know it will happen!
