DH, DD and I just returned last night from our 8 night stay at the Fort. It was our first time there, and we stayed in a cabin (2529). Just some random thoughts and observations we had:

Cabin was terrific! Tons of room, though not as many drawers/storage spaces in the bedroom as I expected. Loved having a real bathroom. The kitchen was nice, though we didn't use it too much. Mousekeeping was Fantastic, and we tipped at the end of the week. The location was okay, the fort is so spread out though. We only had a few stops to get to the Outpost or the Meadows, the Settlement took quite a bit longer. Unfortunately, the bus stop was right outside our bedroom window and people from the loop went through our "yard" once they got off the bus.

Transportation: this was an issue. Not so much within the fort, but just the to and from. The orange and purple buses seemed to come regularly. The marina was fine to get to MK (except on Sunday, when the triathalon was happening and there was no boat to MK until 9:30). The buses from the parks however were a NIGHTMARE! Very long waits at all the parks. I understand that there may not be as many folks using buses as lots of folks at the fort use their own car, but there is no reason why us and a family with 3 small kids had to wait almost 40 minutes for a bus at DHS (in the 96 degree heat no less). Sharing the bus with WL was not a problem, and only the one night at Epcot was the bus being crowded a problem.

Food: It is really disappointing that there isn't a real counter service restaurant at the fort. The Meadows snack bar closed at 5, and on Tuesday night when it was hailing and pouring rain, we were stuck. We were on the QSDP, and unless we wanted to traipse to WL or a park (which we really did not) we had to pay for a meal. We got take out from Trails End (pizza was so so, DD loved the chicken meal). I understand that many people are camping and bring their own food, but would it be so hard to do a CS at TE? The chicken meal could be a CS credit, it is actually cheaper than some CS meals in the parks.

Trading posts: The Meadows had way more selection than the Settlement. Having to pick up packages from the park at the store was kind of a pain too. I can't understand why if you are staying in a cabin, they can't deliver the packages to you. The staff was hit or miss, sometimes very friendly and helpful, other times not.

Campfire and trail ride: Let me start with the positive: the trail ride. DD and I did this on Weds morning, and we had a blast. We did the 8:30 am ride (not too hot yet). DD rode Toby (a slowpoke) and I rode Bugsy. Neither of us had ever ridden before, but Carrie and Justin our guides did a great job in helping us. Carrie was super sweet and an all around asset to Tri Circle D.

The campfire, well let me say that we had fun making smores, but the behavior of others left us with a sour taste. While I will never win a mother of the year contest, I pay enough attention to keep my child from doing things are are dangerous to themselves and others. There was a young boy, about 5, who had a very large branch (probably 3 feet long and 2 inches in diameter). He was swinging it around, nearly hitting his brother in the head. Then once the campfire was started, he would stick the branch in the fire then swing it around. I went up to the chuck wagon and told the CM there, since the parents weren't going to do anything about it (too busy drinking their beer). Then he climbed over the railing around the fire pit and was practically IN THE FIRE! Again, mom and dad did nothing. I know that kids want to get close to toast their marshmallows, but mom and dad should have been supervising. My DD is 9, I did not let her go up alone and told her where she could stand.

All in all, the cabin was great for the space, but I don't think we will stay at the fort again. Next trip is in Jan for the half marathon, and we are staying at POR.

Nice honest review. As a long time camper at FW I never could understand why anyone would rent a cabin there instead of a DVC at any other resort. The whole advantage of FW is sleeping in my own bed with my own stuff and bringing/saving on food. Any onsite guest can come to the camp fire and use the facilities, just not the pool. And yes the kids can get crazy at the campfire, they realy need some staff to monitor the fires.

Ok we are campers in a tt and stayed at the fort for two weeks, and you are not the only one that feels they are in need of a food court area, we were not on the dining plan but I also didn't want to spend my days cooking so we went to Trails Ends twice to take out chicken and both time we ended up with nothing because we didn't fall between the hours of take out.
trust me nothing is worse than fat hungry people...heehee

Also we didn't drive to everything the first week we took the bus and we also waited the 45 minute wait for a bus from Epcot. People walked thru your site from the bus stop, we were in site 303 and peoples dogs poop while we sat outside eating ice cream :scared1: good part is they cleaned it up afterwards, you gotta love the camping life...haha

I'm sure we will be back but they really do need to work on a few things.

Hey Terri! Long time no see! I can't believe you said a cross word about a poor innocent little pooch! Good to see you posting around here!:)

DH, DD and I just returned last night from our 8 night stay at the Fort. It was our first time there, and we stayed in a cabin (2529). Just some random thoughts and observations we had:

We were there the same time as you, in loop 1700, site 1739 and LOVED IT!

This is also an issue with campsites. People would walk right through our site to the bath house. It is amazing how inconsiderate and rude people have become!

Sharing the bus with WL was not a problem, and only the one night at Epcot was the bus being crowded a problem.

I have been saying this too and get alot of flack for it but it is sooooo true. I know part of the magic for some people is riding the bus and not moving their car when they get there, but there is no magic in waiting for a bus for eternity and then riding to somewhere you don't need to go just to get back to the Fort. For most parks you can leave your campsite and be at the park in 15-20 minutes or less and riding a bus takes a min. of 40 on a (slow) avg. day. Transportation is a huge issue and it is getting worse. I think the biggest problem is cutbacks in staff and the number of bus routes they have combined.

Food: It is really disappointing that there isn't a real counter service restaurant at the fort. The Meadows snack bar closed at 5, and on Tuesday night when it was hailing and pouring rain, we were stuck. We dine at our camper but I agree that the Fort needs a decent CS or maybe a food court would be nice?!?

I agree! Some CM at the store were very rude. Maybe they need more help?

It is amazing the morons that are allowed to have children?!? I think my kids and husband tried the movie the night you are talking about and they finally left because of the kids running around, people talking and not being able to see or hear the movie. The campfire is a nightmare on weekends.

All in all, the cabin was great for the space, but I don't think we will stay at the fort again. Next trip is in Jan for the half marathon, and we are staying at POR.

I am sorry your experience wasn't as great as you hoped but you have some very valid points. Disney needs to do some serious improvements at the Fort and not just to the pool!;)

I vote for a food court too!!! We don't get DDP while staying in the cabin. It would be difficult to get our meals. Especially on days that you just want to stay at the resort. So I could see your frustration. If we run out of food, we just go off site. It is only 10 minutes away from decent food. And cheap.

Thanks for the TR.

Hmmm, why is this? The three times we stayed at ASMo, we never waited more than 10 minutes for a bus anywhere. Granted, we were there during the value season so I know that means less people. However, we were told that when the parks are in their peak season, more busses run more frequently. I am not planning on using my car when we visit in September. That is part of the reason why I stay on site.
I am sorry your visit wasn't magical in every aspect.:flower3: How frustrating!

Agree that the Fort REALLY needs better dining options. ::yes:: Even for those who have their own campers. Sure if you have your own camper.. you can cook your own meals. Yet, most have spent a long day touring the parks and really don't want to start cooking dinner. We left the Fort and went to the food courts at POR and CBR when we wanted a quick bite. Trails End just didn't appeal to us. :crazy2: For the prices they charge for the cabins, and even for the increase of the price of the sites...something more needs to be done in the way of dining options.
Personally while I like the camping loops of FW, I have found the cabins to be too removed from the amenities that the campground offers. If you know that going in, and that's your choice... then that's fine. It's my feeling however, people often book these accomodations thinking they'll have a bit of extra room. Many don't realize they're also sacraficing some convenience for that extra room.

We love the fact that the cabins are remote!!!! But you are right Auntie.......it makes it hard for those who come to the fort without a car, or GC. Those are two expensive s we save for and know we need. We like the quiet, the nature etc etc but it also comes with some drawbacks.
I hear ya TE. BLAH!!! Wouldn't it be nice to have just some good sandwiches, salads and fruit!!!!

We waited 2 years ago for almost 40 minutes for a DTD bus!! I have no idea why but we drive there now. It takes 5 minutes and there is always parking.

We picked the cabins this time because DD wanted to go "camping". Momma don't do camping ;), so this was our best choice. We liked the cabin and understood that there was distance between the cabin loops and the majority of stuff at the Fort.

The bus issue-we were told by a person in the know that during slower times they are staging buses-meaning someone is monitoring the bus stop and when there are more people waiting then a bus will be dispatched. Like I said, only the one night was the bus full. Every other time, the bus was nearly empty. We saw lots of buses for POR, Pop,and CBR regularly. I don't know what the solution is, but it was a pain for us at times.

The food court idea is good! I can't imagine they couldn't add on somewhere to make a full time CS. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. But alas, I am not in charge, so it is not up to me!

We've never stayed in the cabins, as we stay in our own camper, but I think some of your points apply to the campsites as well. I am in total agreement that the Fort needs a good counter service option. I'd love to see a food court, but I'd settle for hamburgers, chicken nuggets and salads from a place with reasonable hours (the Meadows Snack Bar doesn't have reasonable hours). We don't necessarily want to cook, and we don't want a buffet for every meal.

As for the transportation, within the campground it's fine. To get to the parks, it's hit or miss. If you just miss the bus to one of the parks or DTD, it can take a while for the next one. Sometimes they're very crowded and it's standing room only. I also find the buses to be freezing much of the time because the AC is cranked up so high. My teeth have chattered on a Disney bus when it was 85 degrees outside. We usually choose to drive our own car to the parks because it's simply more convenient.

If I were you, I'd definitely look into renting DVC points and staying in a nice a bedroom villa.
