Baby items...what is ok to get used?

We have decided that our stroller, crib, and car seats must be new. What items are ok to buy used?

We are considering getting used:
Bouncy seat
Swing
Bassinet ( or sleeper thing that goes by the bed)
Some clothes

Things we are still debating new vs used:
Pack and play
High chair
Changing table
Dresser

Any input or tips?

We bought a used pack n play (and rarely used it), bouncy seat and swing. The rest you listed we bought new. The dresser could be bought used and would be fine, as long as it was cleaned. And we never used a high chair. We had a seat that attached to our kitchen chair that our son sat in until he was able to sit at the table. Saved a ton of space, did the same as a high chair and cost less, too.

Just about all of that you can buy used. I would do a recall check first for things like high chair, pack and play, bassinet. If you get items from certain resell shops, they do the recall check.

I would buy the car seat and crib/matress new.

We bought almost everything used, the only new things were car seat (would never get a used one), crib mattress, and high chair (bought for us).

We found a very nice crib at a yard sale and checked it for recalls and then at another yard sale found the matching changing table. This was 13 years ago though and I know that crib regulations have changed since then so that might change things.

After buying so much new stuff for my first, I learned that I probably should have gotten used! I would only buy a new car seat though (never know if it was in an accident) I have found many great baby/kids based consignment shops. I would suggest looking for a few, while some are more like thrift stores, I travel to one that sells higher end items and she will only accept very good quality.

I've bought/been given everything on your list used at one point. Keep in mind that the majority of items I received were from family or friends. But I have bought 2 strollers on craigslist, as well as a pack and a play and 2 car seat bases.

I think car seats and crib mattresses should be new. Everything else could be used as long as it is in good condition and fairly new.

Why would a stroller need to be new ?

I would consider a new one, if I was buying a travel system which incorporates the car seat... However I did buy a used double which has worked out great! I use it mostly when we go to WDW and buying used saved me a lot of cash for something that I don't use often.

Carseat and mattresses must be new. I would not get a high chair. They have nice booster seat type of chairs. Never ever used a changing table with any of my kids. Used the bed, floor or sofa.

You can buy everything but the car-seat used! I personally would buy new car-seat, crib mattress and breast pump and bottles and suckers but everything else can be second hand in my opinion.

Make sure any carseats and carseat bases you get are new. You have no idea if someone is lying when they tell you that they have not been in an accident.

A PP is right when they said to check for recalls.

Yup, and everything else can be used.

I would not buy a combo stroller set either, the stroller is always too big. They sell great strollers that you just drop your infant seat into and then you can buy a nice stroller that will fit your needs better.

I wouldn't buy a used crib or carseat. Otherwise, used was fine. I was the fifth out of six kids and doubt I got a "new" anything before I was five. My SIL gave me most of the baby stuff we needed as her son was a few years older.

Carseat and crib mattress to me must be new. The rest I am okay with gently used.

For safety purposes, car seat must be new (unless I knew where it was coming from...i.e. my sibling or best friend). And I'm weird about "soft" items used that could harbor things; so new crib mattress for us.

Anything else could be used, including the stroller, because you can often find the stroller to hold the car seat (there are a lot of interchangeable ones). I'd even buy a crib used, but I know not everyone agrees on that one.

I would add that it's always funny reading through baby threads about what people use and don't use. For instance, contrary to what a PP said, we use our changing table every single day - multiple times - because it's easier for me to keep the diapers, wipes, and clothes there. So I bring the baby there to change rather than keeping that stuff all over the house. And I love my travel system stroller. Yes, it's big. But it holds stuff, pushes so nice and is comfortable. Lots of people think they are too big and never use them, I use ours often.

We had some great luck hitting yard sales when I was pregnant. My SIL and I were pregnant at the same time (our kids were born on the same day) so my mom was double looking at yard sales (even though my DS was my 1st and my SIL was having her 4th). We picked up a pair of matching Graco strollers at 2 separate yard sales, one we paid $8, another $5. My mom kept them at her place so that when everyone we could have strollers at the house already. They were perfect for walks to the beach too!
Be sure to check craig's list for stuff too!

It's the infant car seat stroller combo.

I wouldn't bother buying one of those. The stroller ends up being really clunky, and you'll end up getting a new one.

I didn't really use a stroller much for the first 6-9 months - it was easier to take him out of the carseat and use a baby carrier for him. He would rather be held, and then I had both hands free too
