Hi everybody! LTNS!!!

Ok, all you mommies - surely some of you have your very own personal favorites....which baby foods are palatable for us grownups?

I'm having throat surgery, and am a wee bit concerned about nutrition during recovery. Doc says eat macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes, applesauce, etc. But I don't want that much starch! Hoping to find edible alternatives that are also rich in nutrients.

Ideas?

Yogurt is always good and it comes in so many flavors that you may not get as bored with it.

You could also always do soups - vegetable, tomato, etc. there are lots of combinations.

Sooo nice to see you. Sorry you are having surgery. Please bring us up to date on what you have been doing. No suggestions other than I fed my father a lot of oatmeal, cottage cheese and bananas.

Great to see you again Pebs!!!! I hope that other than needing throat surgery, everything is going well for you. As far as the food goes, fruit smoothies work well and you can make them any flavour you want!

All right I tried them.....

if it was gross how did I expect them to like it.

Gerber apples and ham, pears& peaches, basically any of the fruits.
Tender harvest Butternut squash and Corn, oatmeals (adults w/babyfood fruit worked better)
Beachnut Bring on the blueberry buckle dessert!!!!

I spent alot of time with the blender when my friend had her jaw wired shut anything we ate went in it word of warning meats are pretty bad in the baby food line. Veggies are okay but its easier to do your own. Stay away from the mac and cheese ugh!!!
Good luck
Christy

Hi Cheryl. Just talking about you last night, regarding an update on Derrick, with Tony, while we were at Illuminations. I should ask about you more often, so nice to see you. :)

The mashed potatoes sound yummy. Hope all goes great, Pebbs, and you are back to your regular course of food in no time. Please do stop by a bit more often. :)

Hi Pebblszzz! Long time no see!

Good luck on your surgery. Sending you tons of PD!:D

Thanks for all the great ideas!

Any smoothie recipes would be greatly appreciated, since I've never actually made one myself (and I doubt I'll be driving the 8 miles to get one made for me).

My guess would be that you insert into blender:
fruit
milk?
yogurt?
ice?

FYI: It's nothing majorly serious. Started out as "snoring surgery", then my HMO said they don't cover that. So doc found ways "around it". Taking out the tonsils, adenoids, part of the roof of my mouth, and rearranging my sinuses (weird, I know).

Once I figure out how to get OXYGEN, I'll work on eating again.

I usually make smoothies with frozen fruit, yogurt, a bit of honey if you want and some low fat milk. The frozen fruit makes it thick like a milk shake but doesn't dilute it like ice cubes can.

Try the Welch's Frozen Fruit Juice Bars . . . yummy, and helps with the sore throat as well . . .

Good to see you back!

My mom eats peanut butter blended with pear baby food on toast all the time.

I've heard that the blended foods for older babies are supposed to be much better than the ones for the littlest babies, but none of them are all that great. I agree that smoothies are always great. I usually use plain, lowfat yogurt, fruit, and juice. You can stir in powdered milk for extra calcium and wheat germ for fiber and B vitamins. Ground flax seeds would be healthy, too. Frozen fruits will eliminate the need for ice, and it's so easy to just get a few frozen berries or peach slices out of the freezer. Bananas are also good. Wait until they're a little over ripe, then peal them, halve them, wrap them in foil, and put them in the freezer. You'll be able to easily pop in half a banana to your smoothies, and the over ripe ones are the sweetest.

Pretty much all baby food is starchy (fruit all the time isn't really better than mac & cheese!). The one thing that's all protein is the jarred meats, but, well, ick. :) Ground chicken or whatever, basically. I mixed it half & half with a fruit for DS. I never tried it myself. The cats like it!

Someone just gave me a smoothie recipe a few minutes ago!
1 sliced frozen banana
1/4 cup frozen berries
1 cup orange juice
3 tbsps lowfat vanilla yogurt
Blend

Sounds easy!

Bless you, Gillian!

I'm printing out this entire thread....
