Baby Dies After Falling Out of Grocery Cart

sad yet I am confused....Why is the employee pushing your child and the child wasn't strapped into the seat itself?

It sounds like the child was strapped into the carseat, but the carseat itself fell out of the cart, with the child in it.

Why are you confused and why do you think the child wasn't strapped in?

Actually depending on how it fell it may have been better for the child to not have been strapped in.

Was the baby not properly strapped in the carseat? How could a baby have head injuries unless he actually fell out of the carseat when it fell from the cart?

If the handle is not up--the baby is vulnerable if the car seat falls face down. I could have sworn in some type of child safety class that it was recommended to leave the handle up, just in case. Although, the preference is certainly to not place the baby where it can fall. But for some reason, keeping that arm handle up sticks in my mind as a prudent choice for "just in case".

However, some handles must be left down when in use in the car. Or at least that's how it was back when I needed an infant seat (many years ago) so maybe things have changed.

I shop at Publix (I love Publix) and they push the cart out for you and load your groceries. This is part of their "service." If my son is in the seat, he gets pushed by the employee. They usually are very friendly and strike up conversations with him. We go there a lot and know most of the employees.

I agree with some of the other posters. I was never comfortable putting the bucket car seat in the little seat area. I always put it in the main cart area. It took up a lot of room, but you just put stuff underneath the cart or in the seat.

This was a tragic accident. I feel for everyone involved!

I have seen that as well. But I too was a frequent shopper at Publix and I opted for the employee to walk with me to help me unload if I was keeping baby in the cart. (at least at that age) I recall a few employees remembering when I was pregnant with my first 10 years prior.

I was only referring out of the car. :) Though I don't recall instructions on inside the vehicle.

But it has been a while.

Ummm...because I have never heard of an employess pushing a grocery cart with your child in it...and I asked the question " Was the child strapped in?"

Yes. This is exactly what I was thinking...

I think this is one of the saddest things I have read in a long time. How very tragic for everyone involved.

agnes!

I believe I've heard/read that too because I remember thinking what an impractical piece of advice it was. I'm not a short woman (5'7") but having the carseat on the cart seat interfered with my ability to see over the cart with the handle down (another reason I preferred to keep the kids in the big part of the cart, even when it meant carrying a hand-basket while pushing the cart!). With the handle up, vision would be even more obstructed.

It's a very tragic accident. I have to question why the employee was walking over a speed bump anyway. If they were crossing the parking lot's street, it would have been sensible to go around a bump, especially with an infant in the cart. One time I had my toddler in the cart seat and the curb leading up from the parking lot was too high and caused the cart to jolt. I told the manager and they quickly smoothed that area. My heart goes out to the family and the employee, I can't imagine how they will cope.

How awful, my heart goes out to the baby's family and the empoyee.

She's confused because we live in Boston, where a grocery store employee would NEVER help you out to your car or lay a hand on your cart with a kid in it. I remember the first time I shopped in a Publix in Florida and someone offered to take my groceries out to the car. I wondered if I looked handicapped somehow.

This is just a terrible tragic story for everyone involved. That store employee will never be the same.

So tragic for all involved..........how soon will the legal battles begin?

What a horrible accident. :sad1: Before we had a child, DH and I were having dinner at a restaurant one night. The table next to us had a baby in a car seat perched on top of an upside down highchair. I can still hear the sound of that car seat hitting the floor when someone jostled the highchair. Thankfully the baby was strapped in and not visibly hurt, but I remember the paramedics came anyway. It was awful; I can't even imagine how horrible the mother and that employee feel.

This Kroger is within sight of my mom's flower shop in Macon. We did 2 floral arrangements for the family and delivered them yesterday. The family lives in a neighborhood VERY close to the Kroger and I'm sure that's where they do the majority of their grocery shopping, we were told that the person pushing the cart is a family friend. I'm sure they are absolutely destroyed by this. Accidents can just happen in an instant. The whole time my mom was making the second arrangement to take to the family she kept saying "how do you make something like this for a grieving family........." It broke both of our hearts, we were at the shop when it happened but we hear so many emergency vehicles driving up and down that road everyday we didn't think anything of it. The baby would have been baptizer this Sunday. :(

Heartbreaking accident. So sorry for all involved.
