I was at DCA for my birthday on Friday, and my wife and I went to the Aladdin show. This show is an amazing Broadway caliber show, and it really was amazing
First of all, there was a wonderful set up with ASL interpreters. I am starting ASL lessons in January, so I think watching the interpretation is as cool as the show!
But best of all - in the chorus (there were about a dozen people in the show in addition to Jafar, Iago, Aladdin, Jasmine, and the Sultan) was a lovely woman with an amazing voice - in a power wheelchair!!
I have never seen someone in a wheelchair in a show who was ACTUALLY a person with a disability (i.e. the wheelchair is not a prop for the show) in a mainstream production (not a wheelchair performance troupe).
She was costumed and they always incorporated her chair into the act (in the opening scene where the townspeople are going to the market, they made her chair look like a market stall). She danced, she sang, she went through the audience. She had three different costumes, and they were always just like everyone else.
I am going to try to take photos next time!
I sing and use a wheelchair, and I just assumed that I could never perform in places like this because of the wheelchair. Silly me! Disney magic can make anything happen!
