How do all these kids who have multiple after-school activities (band/ orchestra/cross-country/football/basketball/gymnastics/choir/drama/academic teams/etc.)... I mean if practices or rehearsals are right after school and then there are meets or games once or twice a week...how do they get everything done (like homework or enough sleep)? What are their grades like?
agnes!
Well I know for me, you just found a way to do it, or you simply can't do everything anymore. In high school, we didn't have a formal lunch period, but we would have free periods once or twice a day, usually. Everyone had it at different times, and I would usually do homework at that time. When I was a senior, I had the last period free, but since I usually had orchestra after school, I would use that time to do my homework for the day. Or we would take our books into the band room and while the conductor or singers were working with one section, we would do homework. For example, if the conductor needed to work on something with the strings, then the woodwinds take a little break and do a problem or 2. Or sometimes, they would start working on a song that didn't need a few players, so those people would sit in the hallway and do work, and we'd call them back later.
Honestly, I knew that my grades were actually better the more things I had scheduled. During "show seasons", I would have rehearsals on average 4 times a week, plus private sax lessons and private piano lessons once a week each. Also had ice skating a couple times a week for a couple hours. My grades were always E's (on an E/G/S/N/U system). During the times between shows, I found myself with so much free time that my grades would start to drop because I'd feel all this free time, and not have that motivation or pressure to get things done.
