Average sick days

I don't understand why a person who has been with a company for 10 years is or should be entitled to get sick more often than someone who has worked there 1 year?

Personal or vacation time is different, that is something that is generally planned and IMO earned as you gain tenure with a company. But sick days? I've never really thought about increasing sick days :confused3

I've been at my company for 33 years, so I get 25 full weeks sick pay and 14 weeks half pay.

1/3 of the employees use one day sick per year. About another 1/3 use 1-3 days sick per year.

Management is very happy with those numbers.

My company has a PTO system, no separate sick days. We start out with 20 days for new employees, 30 days for over 25 years (increases in between, can't remember the numbers). After 5 days of PTO for one illness, it goes to short term disability (up to 13 weeks). PTO has to be used for illness, vacation, funerals (except immediate family), family care, holidays not on the company schedule. We can carry over 5 days. We can also buy an additional 6 days.

I work for a great company benefits wise. We get 4.67 hours PTO per pay check so a little over a day a month. Comes out to a little over 2 weeks a year. After you have been on the job 2 months you get 2 full days. Used to be we could only carry over 80 hours per year but now you can carry over 240 hours. That is 6 weeks. We also have the short term disability but you have to pay for it on your own. It is really cheap though. About $6 a pay check. You can use the PTO for anything. Vacation, sick time, sick child, mental health day. Whatever you want.

Everyone at my company gets 5 sick days a year. You can't carry them over. But, if you have not used all 5, they go into a sick bank for you to use if you get really sick or to use before you go on short term disability. I usually use 2-3 days a year. I also get 10 vacation days a year plus 2 personal days. Once I am there 5 years, I will get an extra week vacation. I would rather get 17 days PTO to use how I want like DH's company gets. The only problem with that is that many people come into work sick so they can use the PTO for vacation.

I work part time at a hospital, and I don't get sick days; I either use my vacation time or I don't get paid. The full time people get 5 or 6 per year, BUT, they have to use 2 days of vacation time before they can use sick time (I guess to prevent people calling off when they aren't really sick?) unless they're in the hospital. They are not allowed to use sick time for sick children or dr appts.

My DH, on the other hand, gets quite a bit of sick time and can use it for dr appts--his, mine, or the boys.

I get 10/year. I might use 1 a year. I don't think I have ever used more than that. I also give up 1 each year towards a sick bank. They roll over to the next year and depending on the current contract, can have $$ value at retirement time.

We have PTO used for all of it. You start with 20 after your first year, then get five more for each five years you stay with the company and call roll 5 days per year into the next year. So I had 30 this year and will have about that many next year. I have trouble using them up, frankly. I can't imagine how people who have been with the company for 20+ years find a way to take 40 PTO days and not get swamped by their work - that's what i hate about missing work is trying to catch up again when you get back!

I have been at my place of employment for 5 years and I get 10 sick days. Our company has 14 staff members and I have gotten 10 sick days since almost the beginning. In addition to sick days, which my company considers personal days, I also get vacation time, which is currently 15 days. I can use my time any way I like and I do not have to be sick to use the personal time.

When I was working, I got 5 days (and they didn't carry over).

I recently applied for another job and they gave a total of 5 days of leave a year (vacation, personal, sick).

All employees here (university) get the same:

12 sick days (these accumulate from year to year) - if you are out sick more than 5 consecutive days, you stop using sick time and start using/collecting short-term disability (60% of pay).

3 personal days (must be used each year, do not accumulate)

20 vacation days (these accumulate each year, but you can't roll over more than 20 from year to year).
