Average Night Room cost - does this go up over the years?

I don't have a DVC membership currently but am intrigued and have been thinking about it more over the past few years. One thing I haven't found is - does the average cost to book a night for a given resort go up over the years (with inflation and other increased costs), or does it generally stay the same (and the point costs merely shift across the seasons)?

For ex, let's say I pick up a 150 point contract for Animal Kingdom and I have enough points to book a week for a Savannah Studio for most of the seasons. While the point charts do change from year to year, would I be able to reasonably assume that 150 is approximately enough to get by for the duration of the contract, or would I need to buy more points as the years go by to keep up with inflation?

(I realize annual dues go by year by year but wasn't sure about avg nightly room rate)

Total points in a given resort can't change but the way they are allocated can change. Points required can change between seasons, room sizes, etc. so in general it is wise to buy a bit more than needed (10%-ish) to cover those changes.

^ Great, thanks. That was what I was hoping for but didn't see this officially mentioned anywhere on DVC blogs or sites that I could find.

Bear in mind that maintenance fees do go up. So even if points stay the same, you will be paying more dollars per point in years to come.

Right, in general the amounts of nights you can book with 150 points will remain the about the same each year, just maybe not in the exact same seasons / dates year over year as DVC might shift points arounds between the seasons, but there should be a season / dates that will work for you 150 points, just not necessary the season / dates you want.

That's why DVC owners usually recommend having about 10% more points than needed, so you don't have to move with the seasons points changes if/when it happens.

Great3

The shifting of points among seasons is allowed as long as total resort points remain unchanged (i.e., an increase during one season needs to met by a decrease during another). Such shifting of points is allowed to address changes is seasonal demand. As you will see when comparing the 2020 and 2021 charts for WDW resorts, a significant shifting of points is taking place between those two years with the Oct to January season rising in daily points required, while the middle of Sep, and May 1 to August 15, are lowering in daily points needed. The reason for that change is that over the years the Oct to mid-Jan period grew in demand to such an extreme that it made the entire rest of the year look like an off-season, and during that fall season it even became difficult to get a number of rooms at 11 months out.

Be aware in evaluating a purchase that it is possible that a second wave of shifting points by raising the the fall season to lowering others might occur in 2022.

To add that points overall does not change, the annual dues does. They will continue to increase however the same holds true for cash bookings.

I’d recommend that you buy whatever points are required to go during your travel time plus a small cushion of 10% extra.

That way you have enough to offset most increases in your season. Any excess points can easily be rented to offset any dues.
