Our twins start school in sept and we want to minimise holidays in term time

On average what am i looking st for august flights from london

the cheapest we have found for this year direct is £1050 per person and we have been looking since last April. We found the cheapest ones at 11 months out from Glasgow with Virgin for £850 but dithered for a few hours and they were gone :( That was flying on a Saturday. They have been about £100 pp cheaper to fly midweek if you can and obviously much cheaper to fly indirect.

Our flight this year cost £1,500 for each adult PE with Virgin. The increase in flight costs over the past 5 years in school holidays has just been horrendous.

We paid £650 each for indirect via JFK for this August. Spent several months checking prices but eventually booked in Feb with BA/AA.Couldnt hold my nerve any longer!

I booked a fly drive with Virgin from Manchester (won't be taking the car) and it was £4177 for 2 adults and 3 kids aged 15, 11 and 7. That was for the last two weeks of August.

Firstly can I just say "OMG your twins are starting school?", I remember you having those little girls as if it were yesterday :scared: Where does the time go?

Regarding flights, we have done August now 3 years running:

Year 1: M&M Virgin flight. PE Man to MCO £459.00 each
Year 2: Delta LHR-BOS-MCO-JFK-LHR (we stayed over at each stop for a few days) We flew Delta Economy Comfort similar to PE £789.00 each
Year3: Cork-LHR-MCO (PE) MIAMI-LHR (1st Class) through eflights £818.00 each return.

As you will see we always tend to grab a bargain, although what I will say is our children are now that little bit older which helps us now travel indirect. When ours were younger we used to stomach whatever the cost and make sure we booked the MAN-MCO direct flights the day they came out. The last time we did this I recall the cost for 6 PE seats M&M been £4890.00 that was at 11months out.

Annette :)

We are flying Monday 18th August, returning Monday 25th August this year, in economy with BA. Direct from Gatwick to MCO.

Our flights were £700 each. We actually paid £600 each as we had a £200 voucher as an apology from BA for the problems with the hotel we booked through them when we went to New York last summer. We book just over 11 months out... during the sale. We'd priced up the flights the week before the sale, and they were £1000 each for the same flights/dates.

It may work out cheaper to book a package early and not use the accommodation with travelcity for next year is £3400. Also thomascook packages £3538 for 4 adults (but only at manchester). The cheapest quote so far I have found was a few days ago is to miami from london - virgin fly drive (through travel city) drive for £3006 for 4 in Aug for 18 nights.

2012. 27th July Virgin PE. £800. ( those were the days!)

2013. 22nd July which was first day of school holidays. Delta. LHR-BOS-MCO. MCO-JFK-LHR. £420. Then paid $79 each way per person to upgrade to economy comfort front row which was well worth it. Loads of room to put our feet up.

2014. 6th August. AA LHR MIA MCO. MCO MIA LHR. £600. Since paid to upgrade to main cabin extra about £400 total for 3 of us both ways and been able to book front row.

Can't remember 2011 but it was on Virgin on 3rd August. Think it was about £750 but only one way PE

You can book Virgin fly drives now. I just prices up between 14 and 18 days the first two weeks of August. It's very scary. About £5,200 for 2 adults and two teens. I shall keep looking.

I also can't believe they are going to school - they were babies in a pram when we met at DTD.

Worth checking the holiday dates carefully - some schools still have 2 weeks in Oct or May or Easter out of step with other schools. So you may not be stuck with August.

As a few have mentioned, bargains for this year's summer holidays have been few and far between.

Back in 2010, we had Heathrow - Miami flights (booked the previous September) for £403 each through American Airlines.

In 2012, the Delta "glitch" gave us MAN-Paris-Orlando for £527 each.

This year, we decided to treat ourselves as it is DDs 16th and my 50th birthdays, so we splashed out on PE flights with VA from MAN to Orlando, booked via Netflights through Delta on a codeshare for £1,200. At the time we booked, economy flights were £1,100 so we bit the bullet and booked.

However, a few months ago, there were flights available through Irish travel agents which involved flying out to Dublin/Cork/Shannon first, then travelling back through Gatwick or Manchester and onto Orlando with VA. I saw prices of £600pp for PE quoted, although you had to add-on the cost of flights out to Ireland and an overnight stay.

If you are flexible with departure and arrival airports, it can work out cheaper than flying directly into Orlando. We live in Wigan so MAN is only 40 minutes away, but we are happy to fly from other airports if the price is right.

When searching for flights, also consider indirect flights which open up other airports such as Tampa, Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Palm Beach. As an example, over the last few days, Netflights have been showing flights from MAN to Jacksonville departing 30th July returning 15th August (our dates) for £598 with one stop via Chicago on American Airlines.

The best advice is to keep checking the forums to see if people have found that elusive bargain.

HTH.
