Confirmed on Thursday (8/1), Avatar will have 3 sequels, bringing it up to 4.

Just over 13 months after Sigourney Weaver revealed that James Cameron was planning to make three "Avatar" follow-up films instead of two, the news became official on Thursday. Cameron will co-write the three sequels simultaneously with four different screenwriters.

As reported by Variety, Cameron will collaborate with Josh Friedman ("War of the Worlds"), Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver ("Rise of the Planets of the Apes"), and Shane Salerno ("Savages") on the screenplays for "Avatar 2," "Avatar 3" and "Avatar 4." Twentieth Century Fox will release all three films over the course of three years, from 2016 through 2018. It's expected that the "Avatar" sequels will arrive in theaters in December of those respective years.

Full Story

(and yes, I bolded 'official' since I used confirmed in above statement)

I had thought that Avatar "land" in AK was a dead idea, but with these new movies, who knows.

The first movie was visually stunning. The story - meh, just a rehash of old stories. Honest Trailers totally sums it up on youtube. Not holding my breath that the next few will be any better.

I think an avatarland could be cool if done right. But personally I think WDW has so much untapped potential that paying for all the avatar rights was a huge waste of money. But you know it all has to have a movie tie in.....

I think you may be a little late

Try it you may like it dont prejudge

Once again so correct on both accounts.

I am not a fan of star wars in any way-- saw the first two movies when I was a kid and liked them-- never bought the toys. I understand why others would be very happy about star wars land, and that is great. When it opens, I will be there to walk through, ride the attractions, and to see if Disney has been able to create something that will take me from not caring to wanting to see the movies I have never watched. I hope so.

Disney is betting Avatar can compete with Transformers and Potter, no way. Avatar grossed what it did because its 3D special effects and people needed to go to the movies to see the effects not the story. 99% of the public couldn't name 1 character nor did thy care about the characters. I have 4 boys under 13 yrs old. My house is full of Star Wars movies , lightsabers, characters & playsets, Transformer movies & toys, Harry Potter movies, wands, books and toys. My dog's name is Hagrid. No avatar anything. I doubt the boys even know what Avatar is. There is no public desire or base for Avatar. I would not make a special trip to go to avatar land. Thats what should be scaring the pants off Disney. I represent the majority. Would I make a special trip for Potter part 2 ..Yes. Star wars Land...yes. Avatar land. .NO!!!! As a stock holder I hope Disney reads these boards and put the $$$ to star wars not avatar.

You make many assumptions... Funny I wrote my last post while you were writing this one... My 4 girls (ages from 24 to 13) have never watched a star wars movie, and probably could not name a character if their life depended on it. We are all open to seeing what other people find interesting.

Are they Avatar fans? Do they have any Avatar merchandise? The reason that I ask is that you rarely see anything Avatar in stores. Disney is all about merchandising. I just haven't seen anything that suggest that Avatar has lasting appeal to kids. Maybe the sequals will change that?

I agree with this 100%.

My opinion has always been that Disney execs started to sweat a bit when they saw the huge success of WWOHP and someone said, "Let's take a look at the biggest blockbusters of all time. There's Star Wars, but we already own the right to that. There's Twilight, but that doesn't appeal to enough people and there's nothing we could do with it. We blew it on Harry Potter. Titanic won't work. Hey, what about Avatar? James Cameron says he's gonna make a bunch of sequels to that. Let's do it!"

I saw Avatar. It was good. Do I care about a sequel? Absolutely not. And I think the majority of people feel this way. Cameron's ego has gotten the better of him by filming all 3 movies in a row. What if the first sequel tanks? Ruh-roh.

Harry Potter is going to be timeless. Avatar has already been forgotten. Disney should bail on this idea while they still can.

Here's the thing:

1.Do you know who Darth Vader is?
2.Do you know who Jake Sulley is?

100% of anyone you ask can answer YES to question #1.
Maybe 5% (and that's being generous) can answer YES to question #2.

If thats all that matters hello kitty will be much bigger than harry potter because hello kitty kills it in merchandising

If you showed them floating mountains or a bioluminescent plant and ask what that reminds them of

98% of the people who go to the parks are not going to say "hey the e ticket was great the themeing is incredible but the cultural relevance is not there"

Wheres the cultural relevance for mysterious island at disney sea? Or is it just a cool land

People are judging before they ve seen any model or concept art

It's one thing to build a single attraction. It's another to build an entire land based on something the average person knows or cares little about.

Thats just it you have no idea the size or scope of this project. Let it ply out then complain lol
