Does anyone else find Avatar a weird thing to be adding to AK besides me? It wasnt' a disney movie was it? I don't get it and I 'm not sure I like the idea. I want Disney at Disney. What do you all think?

While I have no opinion on the matter, my 23-year old son is beyond thrilled with the idea of Avatarland.

I dont have much opinion either way, but keep in mind Star Wars is not a disney thing, nor are muppets, nor was Pooh (until Disney bought it). SO they are not against incorporating other things into their parks.

When these attractions were opened, were Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, Tommorowland Speedway, Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, etc...(not to even mention the other parks) based on "Disney Movies"?

Add Indiana Jones to that list.

Your not the only one. I think its weird, I don't like it, and I try not to think about it. I'm holding out that they will change thier minds (or fire Staggs for this less than stellar idea and his predescessor will scrap it).

I've had a long time to get used to the idea, I thought it might be the initial announcment shock that made me hate it but nope my dislike of this idea has not decreased one little bit.

Ya i guess your right. All those other things have been there since my family and I have been going I just kind of thought of it as Disney. your point is well taken and I take it back. I'm sure whatever Disney does with it will be great, it always is!

I fell asleep in the movie theater watching the movie so I'm not overly excited about the franchise, but I'm pretty good about separating my movies and my theme park attractions.Just like I'm not a big fan of the Harry Potter movies I can still enjoy the Forbidden journey ride and the entire land at IOA,so even though I didn't love the movie if they give a good ride and a neon glow in the dark forest I'll be happy.

Considering that even princesses not created by Disney, how much original is there anyway. I love idea of AvatarLand, at least something new and fresh.

Maybe it would be better if they had put it in HS. Thats where star wars, muppets, and indiana jones are. Its a movie it belongs there not in AK. I wonder why they decide on AK.

Several reasons,

Pandora is all about animals and nature.
AK needs something new.
AK got more space then DHS.

While Avator is NOT a Disney movie, who the heck cares? It's about protecting a species. And isn't that what Animal Kingdom is all about? Or do people just go there for the attractions and not get the message?

Can Animal Kingdom use a kick in the butt? Sure. So people will stop saying "it's a half day park".

Spend a full day in the park, go through ALL the paths and ALL the attractions and I'll be you will find it's not a half day park. But then again, not all of us really want to relate to animals but I'll get off that soap box now.

I disagree, and here's why. Granted that we know precious little (OK, absolutely nothing) about what the big brains have planned, but the prevailing opinions seem to tend towards the Avatar land emphasizing the land of Pandora, rather than the movie plot. So the whole fabulous jungle with fantastic creatures and emphasis on ecological awareness and the interconnectedness of all living things would be a really good fit with the existing message of AK as a whole. And the fantasy aspect of Pandora would fit with the original idea they had for the Beastly Kingdom (sp?) Now, what it will actually look like when it's actually built is anybody's guess. I just hope they don't screw it up.

Lots of people are either downright against it, saying that Avatar won't have the staying power to become a classic. Others are highly ambivalent. I probably fall in the latter camp. Nothing we can do about it but sit back and wait. And speculate. ;)

that is exactly why I don't like it in AK. I love that park its my favorite. I don't want to take away from the animals and nature by putting hollywood into it.

I consider it a 2 day park but then we go to alot zoos & enjoy seeing the animals

Huh? Care to elaborate?

I just don't think Avatar is that strong a draw. Yes, it did really well in theaters, but will it become a part of the culture in the 'deep' way many of the other WDW stories/characters have?

We'll see how many Avatar costumes there are at halloween, and how many products tie to the Avatar brand. Maybe I'm wrong. I just hope Disney has an out and can retheme that area if needed.

I do not think it will become part of the culture, at least now it seriously missing story but who knows what other movies will bring. Anyway, I do not think it needs to have deep connection for people to enjoy. For example, Pirates were popular way before movie and so other attractions. Pandora is beautiful regardless of story and if they will recreate it, it will be a hit.

As this will not help with current trip planning the thread is being moved to Community board :)

I know I know a bugs life and Lion King are movies too. But they are disney movies. I know AK isn't just a zoo its an amusement park. I just really like the zoo and conservation part. I think that movies are not the best way to promote animal conservation. I just have to remember Disney is in business to make a profit. they must think this is a profitable move. I also have to fess up, i dislike James Cameron and I don't like Disney working with him. It spoils some of the magic for me. But thats just me, I'll get. over it.
