Somehow the car + insurance + gas (not a Jaguar or a Porsche mind you) is a huge expense for us every month
what do you estimate the car costs you monthly and any tips on lowering costs? thanks all![]()
Car is paid off, so no car payment for me...
Insurance runs about $70 per month
Gas is about $30 per month
== $100/month
Alas, the poor girl is reaching the end of life, however. So at some point this year I'll be buying a new(er) car. (Never buy a "new" car, you lose half of your money just driving it off the lot)
$30 on gas? how do you do it?
amazing
Relatively fuel-efficient car, 2 mile commute, don't drive like a jerk.$30 on gas? how do you do it?
amazing
$502 car payment for me
$450 car payment for him
$134 car insurance for me and dh... but i pay it
$260 per month for my gas
$120 per month for his gas

Oh my goodness. over 900 dollars on car payments alone... that is more than my mortgage.
Why so much per month on gas? Do you have long commutes?
The car insurance doesn't seem too bad (at least for my state). Double check your deductibles and discounts. Of course what you drive, your age and where you live are also conditions with car insurance. Since you have payments, you are stuck with full coverage.
You realise that you would have been better off getting a cheaper car with minimal gas (thinking Prius or the like) and you could have snowballed the debt into the other vehicle.
How much further along are you in your payments? Any way to trade down (while lowering your payments) without being upside down?
I haven't had a car payment in three years and I lOVE it! DH hasn't had one in about 7 years.
Lets do some math: 952 (total car payments) x 12 = 11, 424
134 (insurance) x 12 = 1,608 - now I am just assuming it is a monthly bill. It could be quarterly, so then you would multiply by 4
380 (gas) x 12 = 4,560
grand Total yearly cost. 17,592 - not including maintenance or repairs.
It's a lot. If you put both together... it's more than our mortage ($890) Sigh. We both got the cars when we first started dating. I had to wrap my previous car that was having lots of problems in mine. He wrapped his old truck into his--gas in truck was too expensive (4.25 at the time). Luckily... his car gets better milage and he works close to home. I have a crossover SUV and although it does "okay" on gas... but I work downtown and sit in 2 hours of traffic per day--that's where the biggest problem comes in. We also both have 2 jobs--so it's like double the running, lol. They will be paid off in 2014
We just put our insurance together and I'm pleased with the rate. If we can just get through the next 2 1/2 years of payments we'll be good to go!! We also are in debt plans and will be credit card/medical bill free in March 2013!!YeahIt's a lot. If you put both together... it's more than our mortage ($890) Sigh. Wrap-- does that mean that you had a previous car that you had payments in and you rolled those previous car payments into your current car payment?
So in essence you are paying for a car you don't even really have?
Being upside down is awful-- repairs cost too much but you need to have a car.
I see two hours driving- would public transportation takes some of that away? Maybe a train or light rail?
we made sure to put gap insurance on both in case something would happen.
