Austin, Tx Very Un PC Question.

Sorry, can't stir it up on this one.....Dead wrong. If she doesn't want to be there, and want's to be back east, too bad for her.

No attempt to "stir anything up". The things her father was saying sounded absolutely ridiculous to me. In fact, when he repeated them again New Years Eve and expressed incredulity. I think she is homesick and is being manipulative.

Granted I did not come from the east coast, I did come from "redneck" Missouri, but my expectations of Texas are nothing like what it is.

Texas is very, very, very melting pot. Lets see...here in Flower Mound...my neighbors.

Left of me, they relocated from Long Island New York, to the right India, across the street Arkansas, down the street we have Buffalo NY, 2 from California, behind me is Ohio.

I think that the next time her parents suggest the "problem" I will very diplomatically say that I have heard just the opposite and is it possible that she got the one bad neighbor? I will try and find out which area of Austin she lives in. Frankly, in all of my years, the comments that they have made are nothing like anything I have heard about Texas. The stereotypes that I am familiar with center around FOOTBALL! ;)

I think things are just a bit different in the South.

We moved from Michigan to Florida last year.

We came from a very diverse college town. It was very liberal, intellectual, "artsy"-I can't think of any other way to describe it.

Florida is very different. You can go from mansions on one block to shack houses with 8 cars parked on the lawn on the next block. The culture is different down here. I'm not sure redneck would be the appropriate term but it is nothing like up North.

Maybe she is experiencing a little of that. I know that I have noticed it but it's nothing that would make me want to move back to Michigan.

I think it's a load of crap. Austin is a very nice city and if anything, has a lot of college students. I think that demographic is what makes it so liberal.

The only bad thing I can say about it, is the traffic. It's horrible and makes Houston's look like a cake walk.

You want redneck? You need to hit SE Texas. Some small cities are very, very country.

Yeah, we do love football! It was sweet beating a team from California! Sorry, left-coasters. I'm sure you're all wonderful people...I just don't like your sports teams being crammed down my throat on ESPN and the like. Of cours, Reggie B. might be a Texan soon!

Maybe it is the students that are making it miserable. I know when I lived in Tallahassee the students of both FSU and FAMU could make certain every day activities a little bit more difficult.

I understand in a round-a-bout way. When I lived in Destin, I dreaded college Spring Breaks. They were obnoxious and out of control and made simple tasks miserable. That goes for the UT kids that were there too.

Maybe she lives in one of the towns that border Austin? My brother and his family live in Round Rock and they tell me that it's quite conservative. However, pretty much anything goes in Austin itself. It's a great city!!!

That's true. If she doesn't live in Austin itself she may be stuck in quite a conservative little suburb.

However, Austin itself is awesomely diverse and wonderfully liberal. :goodvibes (If ya like that kinda thing. :) )

I told you it was an island... ::yes::

Hello, here's my 2 cents worth.

I was raised in Austin and lived/worked here for 42 of my 43 years of life. Thanks to all you transplanted folks who have had positive things to say about this town. I love Austin, South Austin rednecks and all. :rotfl: We all make Austin what it is...a dynamic, lively and unique city.

I think it is true about living outside of Austin in smaller communities such as Round Rock, Georgetown (that's where I live now - I work in Austin), Kyle, Buda, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill...are more conservative than what goes on in Austin. I find people friendly, helpful and are willing to talk to strangers. I'm sorry but I too, think this is a case of being homesick.
