Other stuff we did (which always comes second to Disneyland:cool2:)

We had a 10 day Parkhopper ticket, so had a few days that we needed to fill in which weren’t Disneyland.

We didn’t go to Universal last time, so we decided to do it this time. It was fantastic.
We did the VIP tour, which while expensive, is so worth the extra cost. We just about fitted everything in, but could have done with some extra time. I chose a Saturday to go because the park was open until 8pm (6pm during the week) and I thought this would give us extra time to re-do the rides we liked after the tour. We did re-ride all 4 rides and did 2 more shows that they didn’t take us to during the tour. The park was packed, so it may have been less crowded on a weekday, but it didn’t affect us seeing we had Front of line access to rides and shows all day.

The psycho house. This guy was amazing. My kids were scared out of their brains that he was going to come and get them (he took out a knife and started running towards our bus!)

War of the worlds set. We got to walk all around and through it which was great.

On the middle Sunday, we went in to Hollywood. We parked at the Hollywood and Highland Centre and looked around the usual places. Saw the Stars, hand and footprints, walked through the Disney Soda Store. It was a bit freaky with all of the weirdos there, so we didn’t stay too long. We then drove through Beverly Hills and headed to Santa Monica beach. Well, being Memorial Day weekend, it was chockers. No carparks, so we just kept on driving right home.

Then the day we were coming home (the next Sunday) we went back to Hollywood. We had checked out so had a car full of bags. We parked again at Hollywood and Highland Centre and headed to Ripley’s Believe it or not. This was the kids choice. I guess it killed some time and the kids enjoyed it. We were going to go to Madame Tussauds, but it was a bit expensive just to fill in some time. Back to Johnny Rockets for lunch and then off to the Discovery California Science centre. This was free (except to see the Space Shuttle) and again, the kids loved it. I was stuffed by this time, and was still getting over my cold, so I sat and waited most of the time.'

Ripleys

Now, we had wanted to go to a Walmart on the way to the airport because we wanted to bring back lots of nice American chocolates and candies. My husband had said that they may melt if we got them earlier, so we looked up a Walmart close to the airport.

As we were driving from the Discovery Centre (which is right next to USC) I started being a bit worried about where this Walmart would be. I looked it up later and found we were right in the middle of South Central LA! Hubby decided to stay in the car while the kids and I went in to get what we needed from Walmart. He said he moved parking spaces at one stage because he didn’t like that where he was didn’t have many people around. We definitely felt like the minority in that Walmart!

Anyway, our other spare days were spent shopping of course. We did the Citadel Outlets (another place we felt like a minority) and the Block at Orange. Citadel was pretty good. The Block at Orange had a few good outlet shops.

Thought I'd put in some random pictures that I like that missed being in the TR.

I have so enjoyed reading and seeing your TR! I have a couple of questions. Where is Lollywood and is it a candy store? Also, where is the closest In-n-out burger to DL? We have never been to one. Thanks!

Hi there. Lollywood is in a store called Sweet in the Hollywood and Highland centre. It's actually about 5 or 6 different stores, all full of lollies, candies, make your own chocolate block, and lots of lolly related toys. It was great.

The nearest In N Out would probably be 1180 S Harbor Blvd, Anaheim. It's a great burger, fries and shakes.

I love, love, love that Cheshire cat scarf. I hope you got it???

Nice pictures. Love all the hats!

Great report thanks for writing it - we head off in November and I've booked the VIP universal tour too.

Lollywood looks like a dangerous place... for our waistline :lmao: Yum! We will be looking out for it when we travel later this year, we're staying in LA for a week first before our week at DL.

How did the kids go with the extended tour at Universal? Did they get bored / over it at any stage? We're thinking of taking DD who will be 11 on that one this time (she has done Warner before?)

Can't wait to return to DL later this year - thank you for sharing all these pics.

Thanks everyone.

No, I didn't buy the scarf. I thought a photo was enough for me.

The VIP tour was amazing, and after 10 days at Disneyland my 12 year old son said the VIP tour was the highlight of the holiday! We had 2 9 year olds and a 12 year old and they loved it. They weren't bored even once. I say do it. It's nothing like Warner Bros tour. I thought that was so so.

Hi Aussieshaz your Trip Report is awesome with many great photos. You have really helped us out as we head over later this year and have booked the kids suite at HOJOs too.

The petting zoo looks great, never knew it existed.
:thumbsup2

What an awesome and informative thread...loved reading about your trip...and with our trip fast approaching in end of July...I have found myself to become even more excited...we are actually leaving end of June and will be spending a month at my husband's home town visiting his family...where we also...will no doubt have many trips to Walmart...we are also visiting Niagara Falls for 4 days...and then finally...making our way to Disneyland for my first ever magical adventure...I loved seeing all your photos...especially the character ones...but noticed you did not post any of Toy Story characters at all (my daughter's favourite)...does that mean you did not see any of them?

You mentioned Minnie breakfast and Goofy dinner...I am so undecided about which to visit...my daughter is not yet into the princesses...so probably wont visit Ariel's...but I am keen to visit Minnie...Gooofy...and Surf's Up for all their breakfast meals as that is my favourite meal of the day...and there is NOTHING like american bacon...we don't have anything quite like it here...so this will be an expensive endeavour...but have fingers crossed we find it rewarding with many opportunites to meet some characters.

We are heading to Universal as well...but most likely wont be getting the VIP pass...although it sounds like it is definitely worth the price...you did not mention Knott's berry farm....have you been there before...or have you heard it is not worthwhile...as we are planning on having a day there?

I am sure I will have many other questions....but will leave it there for now...thanks for creating this great thread!

Thanks for that fantastic trip report and all those great photos! Unfortunately it's made me incredibly homesick for Disneyland.

Only 8 months since we were there and it feels like too long away already!

Thanks everyone for you kind comments. It's nice to know I've helped/entertained/ increased excitement!

Naughty Nurse, we did see Jessie from Toy Story and I did get a photo. I also saw Woody at one stage near Big Thinder Ranch. I think the Green Army Men come out sometimes near the amusement games at CA, but we didn't see them this time.

Regarding Knotts Berry Farm. We were going to go, but decided we'd had enough theme park days and that it would probably be quite similar to Dream world in QLD. It was also opening weekend of all of their new rides, and we thought it would be very busy.

Now regarding bacon! We went to McDonalds and they asked me if I wanted Canadian bacon or American bacon. I had no idea! Apparently Canadian bacon is what we would call ham. We weren't too keen on American bacon though, it's just so thin and see through!

Lots of great info and photos on this thread!

Last year we did WDW with friends. We would go to the same park on the same day but each family would tour at their own pace. We found meeting up later for lunch or dinner gave us the right balance between holidaying together and space. It sounds like you did something similar. Any tips on what to do or not do when travelling with friends?

I think the major thing when traveling with friends is 1/ Do not share accommodation. We stayed at the same hotel, but had our own space at the end of the day. 2/ Agree that it's ok if either family wants to go their own way for an hour, a meal, or for the whole day.

We actually spent all the time together at the parks and had meals together the whole time. We did split up once when they wanted to shop and we didn't. I also went with their family on the Monorail while my family went to see Captain EO.

It worked out great, but I think we were really, really lucky. I think it also worked out because we knew we had exclusive family time after the 5 days together.
