It's pretty far. Ko'olina is a beautiful area but not near Pearl Harbor or Diamondhead. You'll want a rental car for sure and even then, expect some driving. Traffic on Oahu can be a bear!

We were recently in Hawaii. We choose to stay on Wikiki. We looked at Aulani. We found it was way more expensive than similar hotels. A rental car is needed as none of the tours do pick up's from Aulani. You will not find a similar pool area at a Wikiki hotel. However, we spend zero time at the pool, we spent it at the beach.

We didn't rent a car. We could walk to many places. We used the trolley. We also booked a couple tours to take us around the island. They pick you up right at your hotel and there are hundreds to choose from.

New member here..hello!

Expect a (no traffic) 45 minute drive minimum.

Also, not walking or jogging distance to any attractions other than Kolina area.

Wife was raised on oahu and her parents live in a neighboring city so we typically visit the islands a couple times a year (from Cali).

A word on traffic...towards or returning from Honolulu...it is the worst ever (statistically for the whole US) at certain times...do not take this lightly. From Aulani to Waikiki beach will take 1.5-2 hours each way if you plan to go during rush hours...that's < than 40 miles (i think)...add to that parking hassles and it can easily take 2-3 hrs from leaving the hotel room at 8am to being on the beach on Waikiki. Conversely, you could probably cover the distance in 45 minutes if you were driving 5am.

Except for one day on our stay at Aulani, we booked excursions that included transportation. That was our family's choice so we didn't have to drive. There is a rental car agency at Aulani so you can pick up a car in the morning and drop it in the afternoon, if you don't want to keep a car the whole time.
