Aulani Pre-Trip Report for May 2017

Yes I will be going in July I'm sure luao will be back by then but I think that I will go to Paradise Cove. We won't have a car....but heads up about PCC they don't have alcohol if that is any concern8-)
Kerri

Excellent point about drinks, thank you!

I keep thinking we'll tie the Cultural Center luau into a North Shore day, but I'm getting lazy in my planning and am feeling like sitting by the pool as much as possible might be just dandy. In that case, the Paradise Cove luau would totally work for proximity.

I think your "lazy" planning is just the aloha spirit kicking in early:-)
We are doing a cruise around islands after Aulani so I really want to enjoy the resort for the 5 nights. I was going to do North shore 1 day also. I think we will go with oahuprivatetours. Cheaper than Aulani and longer. Originally was going to do excursion through Aulani "surf bus" I think but I'm scared they will cancel and I don't want to miss North shore area, and I also don't want to bother with parking there to rent car for 1day. :headache::-)

I don't check in until May 21st, so will miss you by a day :) I got a mug when I was there in 2014. I will say this, about the only time I used it was on pool days. There are only 3 or so places where you can fill them, and 2 of them closed on the early side. I will probably get one this time, too. I figure it also counts as a souvenir.

Good to know about mug filling. When we've gotten them at WDW, we do always try to see them as a souvenir, as we're not at the resort enough to take full advantage of the refills.

Unrelated update: I booked the Paradise Cove luau for our last night. It looks great, is within walking distance. I liked the idea of the one at the Polynesian Cultural Center, but at least we can head to the north shore at our convenience instead of having it tied to a luau reservation.

Trip is a month from tomorrow!

We got one mug on a whim the second time we were there and we used it more than I thought we ever would. The kids loved hot chocolate in it when we went to the fire pit to see Uncle. My son ended up using it all the time. He would fill it with ice and poweraide to take in the car too, worked out great!

Hi folks! I’m a veteran of WDW and DLR (current DLR passholder), but totally new to Aulani. And other than a solo work trip to Honolulu almost 15 years ago, pretty much totally new to Hawaii. DBF, DS (11) and DD (8) and I are staying in a one-bedroom villa on DVC points 5/11-5/16. So many questions, and your insight and experiences are much appreciated!

1) We have a rental car reservation (Alamo through Costco), as I know we get free parking. Planning to stop at Target on the way from the airport. I don’t think we’ll go through enough food to merit a Costco stop. We will probably arrive at the resort around 2pm. We were there last July, and we went to Costco. We were not members, but had gotten a gift card for Xmas and there was no issues with us being able to shop there. It worked out wonderful. I brought cereal from home, we bought yummy muffins at Costco, rolls for sandwiches for lunch and lunch meat (don't buy condiments, you can grab them for free at Ulu cafe), chips/snacks, and enough pre-prepared meals for 3-4 nights if I remember correctly. We also bought POG juice (and mixed coconut rum in with it), beer, and milk. Costco also had a TON of cool items for the beach (rash guards, towels, snorkel sets, swimsuits, hats, etc).

2) We have a poolside view, but I could use recommendations on a room request. High floor? What else? Have you found requests are usually honored? We only had a garden view, so I cannot help with this. Although the rooms on the bottom floor looked neat with the lanai having a gate to get to the pool area. This could solve your lounge chair issue. But, I don't know how that works to reserve those rooms.

3) Is it necessary to bring our own beach toys, or are the ones available at the beach plentiful? We plan to pack (or pick up at Target) our own snorkeling sets for the kids. I think only one time did we have issues getting sand toys at the beach. We just hung out near the place you reserve them at and hopped in line when we saw someone returning them.

4) While I see the Menehune Bridge is intended for children 48” and shorter, will my kids be allowed to play in that area, or will they be kicked out for being too tall? Same question with Keiki Cove, though I assume there may be less interest here.
Menehune Bridge was closed almost our entire stay and opened up the last couple days. My boys were 8 & 6 and were never told they could not play there. And they loved it. I have read that they can be strict about it now though. I don't think they would be interested in the Keiki cove area.

5) We plan to have most meals in the room. The exception will be on the Sunday of our stay (Mother’s Day), when we have character breakfast reservations at Makahiki, then dinner at Ama Ama. Waiting to see scheduling options for Ka Wa’a luau. Great money saving idea! Consider getting cocktail makings too and or beer if you desire, as mixed drinks at Aulani were about $14 I believe. Oleo room has wonderful happy hour too!

6) My kids are super excited about Rainbow Reef, but have heard concerns that the water is cold. Coming from Oregon, where we swim in the cold Pacific or rivers of mountain snow runoff, I’m wondering if this will be a huge factor.
We are wimpy and thought that the reef was pretty cold, but there is a nice warm shower that you rinse off in before and after snorkeling. =)

7) The not-so-secret word on the street is get to the pool by 8am to reserve lounges. I’m a little stressed about the lounge situation. A lounge is a must for DBF.
In July as long as we got there before 9am, we had no issues. One day we didn't get down there until 10am and couldn't find any chairs at the pool but had no issues at the beach.

8) We plan to spend most of our time at the resort, as this trip is all about taking it easy. But I’ve read the luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center on the North Shore is great and worth the drive. We also plan to visit Pearl Harbor, either on Mother’s Day or the following day. Also contemplating a Ko Olina Ocean Adventures snorkeling tour. I don’t want to drag the kids away from the pools and beach too much, but I do want us to experience some of the history, beauty and magic on the island. We basically stayed at the Resort the entire time with the exception of visiting Pearl Harbor one morning. We were so relaxed and it was wonderful! We only rented a car for the day we went to PH (went to Costco on the way back). It was awesome!)

9) I completed the pre-registration for Aunty’s Beach House. I haven't heard back on our selections yet. DS 11 may be on the cusp, but he’s a huge Stitch fan, so maybe the Space Goo experience will be fun for him. DD 8 is down with anything. My boys loved the Space Goo and the Comedy activity. They loved Aunty's and regularly asked to go there. =)

10) Menehune Adventure Trail seems like a winner. My kids have done MagiQuest at Great Wolf Lodge and loved it. I assume MAT will also be a big hit. My kids loved it. As an adult, it was great but tended to drag on a bit as you cannot skip certain parts. LOL. But they had fun and that was what counts!

11) Speaking of Great Wolf Lodge—while I know Aulani is a far stretch from it—I found while visiting there recently that the kids were good for about 2-3 hours of water play before they needed a break for either a snack or another activity. I think the change in climate may also sap all of us a bit. While pool lounges may be hard to come by, my impression is that there is otherwise plentiful seating around the resort to relax and soak up atmosphere while eating a shave ice or Dole whip. Chairs are plentiful typically at the beach.

I read threads here all the time, but have never actually posted. I whole-heartedly appreciate any tips and advice! :earsgirl:

My answers are in blue above =) I also recommend walking over to the shopping center where Monkey Pod is at (short walk). We ate there a couple times and it was great and awesome happy hour. =) Island Country market is there too with lots of stuff! Check out my TR in my signature if you want. It goes into more detail about a lot of things I mentioned above. Have a wonderful trip!! We are hoping to go back in 2018!

Thank you, @crystal1313! I love the tip about the condiments, too.

I can't believe the trip is coming up so quickly now. It's all I can think about!

I have a feeling my kids are going to make really good use of it! Hot cocoa for storytelling with Uncle sounds glorious.

OK, latest obsession I'm trying to squeeze into the itinerary: Leonard's for Malasadas!

I'm definitely trying to strike a balance between having things planned and embracing the "hang loose" aloha spirit. I don't want my kids to feel like they're being dragged around the island when they'd rather be in the pool. And after the cold, rainy (and snowy) winter we've had, I know we all need to soak in some vitamin D. And I know the days will fly by. But with the trip only a few weeks away, I'm starting to hit that frenzied phase of last-minute excitement.

I don't think I can express the "frenzied" part enough, as I'm surfing the DIS boards instead of working.

Also, DBF lives in Los Angeles, and I'll be there this weekend to take in the Main Street Electrical Parade at DLR. So I have some Disney distraction to keep me busy.

OK, I'll stop for now...

If for some reason you dont make it to Leonards Malasadamobile, Ulu Cafe has little ones and I liked them better. The Leonards one are very traditional which means they are egg-y. I am not a big fan of that kind of thing but I LOVED the little ones at Ulu.

Interesting! That's good info, Kerri! I've never had a malasada, though I'm a big doughnut and beignet fan.

I only really liked the filled ones from Leonards whereas my hubby and kids loved them plain or filled.

A suggestion for those going to Leonards, buy a Portuguese Sweet Bread. Its great with coffee in the morning.

Oh I forgot to mention that we got 3 mugs (2 for the kids and one for DH and I to share) and I feel we got good use out of them. We are not big soda drinkers, but they have unsweetened tea that we enjoyed and the boys liked the punch. They also mixed punch and sprite and loved that as well =) My parents also got mugs and my dad got his money worth just from the coffee! LOL

A thought....if you have available (read "crammable") space (and weight!) in your luggage, how about packing that bottled water? You'd then have that space/weight for souvenirs in the return....although all your dry goods will also free up some space. Genius move..... 8-)

One thing I would do if you have not done so already is grab yourself a couple of large heavy duty ziplock bags and put the ketchup, mustard, syrup and jelly into them. I had a body lotion leak in a suitcase and from then on in, I have always made sure that anything that is remotely liquid or could ruin other things goes into a large ziplock.

Bottled water is no different price there than at home. I can't imagine bringing bottled water in a suitcase. The weight for one, but also the high possibility of it leaking on not only your things, but others' as well, is an issue. I don't even bring much large shampoo; we buy it at Target when we get there. We've gone for 2 weeks (the Marriott Ko Olina) with only carry on bags, then bought large toiletries at Target when we got there.

I do pack some spices and things when we go, but prices at Target and Costco are very reasonable (only thing that you'll find sticker shock is bread is at least $5-$6 a loaf).

I've done that multiple times on trips, just to have water on hand but also "reserve" souvenir space. Never had issues with leaks, but if so, it's just water. I watched our whole flight's luggage sit on an open cart at MCO in a torrential downpour on the way back (luckily) from a cruise (not to mention a friend whose perfume got smashed in her suitcase on their honeymoon...yuck), so a few drops from a water bottle are probably not so bad.

Also, I'm debating now on whether we should even bother with Costco for our 5 days at Aulani or just grab a few things at Foodland. After seeing someone's poke pics, that might be more worth the stop! A much quicker stop, I'd expect.
