August packing

I live in upstate NY and capriss and short sleeve shirts are my norm. I've spent a small fortune on sleeveless shirts and shorts for this trip. Didn't even think about a sweater.

Good to know, even at night time... So no reprieve at late night?
there is a reprieve at night, but it's more like walking from a steam room into a sauna.... There will not be any period of what anyone could describe as fresh, crisp air.

We will bring jackets or hoodies for one reason.....after a week in that heat and humidity, when getting off the plane returning home any weather will feel like winter......

We will be there in a few weeks, and packing is very simple...plenty of shorts and t-shirts, and bathing suit of course.

I love going in the summer because it is SOOOOO easy to pack. Shorts, tshirts, swim suits. Thats it. We don't take any sweatshirts/long sleeves. We do laundry (stay DVC) since we change twice a day. I can fit all our clothes plus DS's air mattress into 2 medium sized suitcases (for 4 people!) with room to spare. If we go in the winter I need at least one extra suitcase! I always tell people that is the advantage of summer trips.

I bring light jackets but usually they stay in the room.

MORE important is 2 outfits per day, one for the day and one for evening. You will likely sweat through the first outfit and want a change of clothes, especially if you go back to your room in between.

Fl in August aka throw a wool blanket over your head, wet with a hose, walk 10 miles

I usually being pants to wear around the hotel room as I freeze, while my DH sweats to death. As cold as I get though, I am always fine at the parks.

Have you ever been in a sauna on the surface of the sun? That's kind of what August in WDW is like.

2 outfits per day are pretty mandatory. I almost wonder why I bother with showering since I sweat as soon as I step outside.

Nice thing is, you don't have to worry about makeup. It won't stay on, so I don't bother with it::yes::

That 73 temp OP mentioned is the temp of your hotel room, not outside at night - lol:rotfl2:

We'll be wearing hoodies on the plane, but they'll come off as soon as we land and won't go back on until we're back up in the air on the way home.

Based on our trip last June, I plan on packing two outfits per person per day. Even in June, a change of clothes felt great during our break, so I assume it will be mandatory to change clothes in August.

On another thread someone posted a tip to bring receiving blankets to the parks. Okay, sounds like a good idea to cover the stroller when my youngest was sleeping or to sit on for parades. Came in really handy when my son got his shirt soaked by the jumping fountains and then we went into air conditioning. Mighty cold then! Just hooked the blanket over his shoulders and secured with clip (another DIS tip!) and he was good.

Otherwise no long sleeves for this fam!

One thing that helps me know what to pack is the hour-by-hour forecast on Weather.com. I just checked today's temps (which would be similar to August). Low of 76 degrees, but that's at 4:00 in the morning! And the humidity is 93%, making it "feel like" 81 degrees in the middle of the night. By 2:00 pm, it's showing 88 degrees, but with the heat index/humidity, it feels like 99 degrees!

OP, back to your original question. I always bring a light, long-sleeved layer for air-conditioned restaurants. It's especially helpful if you get wet (either from a rainstorm or a ride like Kali!), since you'll feel even colder in the A/C. But lots of people don't feel chilly in the A/C, so it depends. I'd plan to bring one long-sleeved layering piece for each person - you may not need them, but if you do, you won't have to pony up the money to buy everyone something! WDW prices are expensive - one sweatshirt alone can easily be $50 or more.

I always pack one long-sleeved shirt for everyone. I don't know why, we never touch them.

We always go in August and I always pack one pair of jeans and one hoodie type jacket for each of us. My DS 6 and myself are normally the only ones who need them (the hoodies) and like others it's inside in the AC never outside. I'm always cold though, I keep my home AC on 78 or I would freeze! :rotfl2:

I love packing for August, because the suitcase is so light! Shorts, tanks and t-shirts! I do tend to wear a sweatshirt on the plane, because the planes are so cold, but I never take it to the parks or anything.

When we go to WDW in August, I have gotten used to the fact that I will start sweating as soon as we get off the plane in Orlando and I will stop sweating a week later when our return flight takes off. I think the only time I've ever worn a long-sleeved anything was a rain jacket during a storm, or nice pants to wear to California Grill.

Like others have suggested - it may be a good idea to wear a sweatshirt or light jacket for your flight, and then you have it in FL if you need it (assuming you will be flying).

The low temps, on average, are 73. Are lightweight jackets, long sleeves, ever needed during this month?

One hoody for each of us incase AC is cool inside or a cold front brings wind in the evenings. Assuming we will only need them because of AC and on the airplane ride.

I take a very thin cardigan, it folds up real small. It's just enough to take the a/c chill off if I'm wearing a sundress.

I'd bring a light sweater/jacket. You may need it in a restaurant. Aside from that, you won't need one. We went last August (the 9th to the 19th) and we didn't need one at all. Ponchos, yes. :)

We've been in the area for the last 6 weeks doing the parks 3-4 times a week, often at night. (We're usually only here in Winter so heat index 100 every day was a new experience!).

I commented to DH last night that I loved not having to dress in layers - still fine in shorts once the sun went down.

A couple of additional observations:
-I worry about restaurants being overly aggressive on the air conditioning. Was pleasantly surprised that this was not an issue for me.

-We stay off-site these days so its been awhile since we've done buses but I've heard several people mention that the buses are REALLY chilly - especially if you've been on Splash or Kali

-Definitely have rain gear. We have the Disney ponchos but found that unless its a torrential downpour we've done fine with the $1.00 Walmart emergency ponchos. Smaller and lighter to carry and we just throw them out when we're done
