August 9, 2011 (8/9/2011) Taking the Wonder to see the AMERICAN CHILD

Caro - I would love to but I will have the boys with me - 20 and 18 - so they prob wont be fun company...

If they like to eat they would fit in. :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:
On our Baltics cruise last summer, one of the cruisers brought her 18yo DD with her to brunch that we had in the private dining room. Caro was with us for that brunch as well. No one thought it was odd she was there, at least not that I heard.

ME...ME...ME....and DH too.:rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

I don't remember you asking this before, but then I didn't remember i was the one who started the thread and needed to added cruisers to the first post. :headache: :dance3: :rotfl2:

Yes, you have to have 12 people on the list in order for them to even consider your request and the most is 14.
Hopefully the server from the Magic last summer won't be on the Wonder this summer - he was HORRIBLE with big groups.

Just so everyone knows, you can still make a brunch ressie when the booking window opens. BUT if and when the confirmation comes thru for the private dining room, your original reservation will be cancelled since you can't have 2 reservations for brunch prior to boarding.

Caro will need your names and ressie number to give DCL for the request.
Thanks for the additional info, Barb! Very good points!

No problems having the boys come! As long as they are comfortable with us , we'll be comfortable with them!

I think she fit in fine! It's fun having different kinds of people there! The 2 times I've had brunch in the private dining room, we have had loads of fun!

Hard to think about Alaska cruise with all this snow and Ice we are getting in Ct

The saving grace to thinking about AK in August with all the snow and ice on the ground now, is that come August we'll all want to get away from the hot, humid weather and will welcome cooler temps. :cool1:

Hello all...just stopped by to provide you all with a status update on my father.

He had his EMG test last week...the neuromuscular specialist is suspicious that it may be bulbar onset ALS, but is running a lot of other tests before giving any final diagnosis. Part of that workup was bloodwork that he had drawn on Friday-she called my mother yesterday to let her know that he has an elevated paraprotein, so now she is sending him to hematology to rule out multiple myeloma as well.

We really don't know what we are going to do about the cruise now. I was perusing another thread about cancelations and trip insurance on the board...and since we have not made our final payment yet (we have been waiting to see the outcome of the testing), we may not be covered by DCL's trip insurance as DCL does not purchase the insurance until final payment has been made. Even though we booked this cruise 10/1/09...ten months before he exhibited symptoms, the way that DCL does the insurance would make this a preexisting condition and probably invalidate our claim if we are unable to travel.

Thanks to everyone for all the prayers and good wishes...trust me, they can be felt from here :)
I will let you all know what we decide in a few weeks.

I was just reading your post on that thread and my heart is breaking for you and your family and the unknown. Will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.
I've been told by a couple of friends that have bought DCL insurance and said they won't do it again since it doesn't cover pre-existing conditions at all.

My heart is breaking too...especially for my father. He is having a really hard time grappling with his mortality as he has been active even through this evaluation process. At this point, we don't even know what to hope for. I can tell you that if it is indeed both things, he will only opt for symptomatic treatment for the myeloma. I am 90% sure that we will probably cancel the cruise based on the info from the other thread but we are not going to make that decision for several weeks.
Thank you all for keeping us in your thoughts :grouphug:

I am so sorry to hear about what your Dad is going through. I will keep him and your family in my prayers.

Thanks everyone :flower3:

I figure I will let the dust settle on yesterday's news and talk to my mother about the situation next week after the scans are completed and we have a better idea of what we are dealing with. Final payment date is April 11th so we have some time to make the decision. If it remains just the ALS and being that he currently is not having any impairment other than speech/swallowing, I think we may try to go as Alaska is one of my father's favorite places...of course, he is usually mountain goat hunting and salmon fishing, but he dearly loves the little quaint town of Ketchikan and was looking so forward to showing us around there. If it is at all possible, we do want to go on this cruise-we may change the airfare to going directly into Vancouver and coming home right after the cruise instead of the week spent between Seattle and Whistler.

It's good to have friends in rough times on the DIS :grouphug:

It is looking more and more that we will be pushing our cruise out to a differnt week, due to DD college orientations, moving to college, etc.

I knew it was a chance we were taking when we booked this week, but until it finally got here, we did not know.

I need to ask someone else to step up and take over the FE list please.

Macavity,
What is involved, just keeping and / posting a list? I have not participated in the FE but will be doing it for this cruise. Let me know what is involved as I do read the boards at least a couple times a week to keep up.
Joe

Finally read through, ok skimmed, the 60+ pages of threads. My wife, Andrea and I will be on this cruise and celebrating our 7th wedding anniversary. The reason for the trip is I will be 40 in September (but wanted to get to AK before it gets colder), so I am very excited. Please add us to the list on the first page....

JillJill - Thanks for the idea on the companion voucher, just got the USAIR card so will book flights when the voucher comes. These flights from Philly are EXPENSIVE!

Joe,

It is really easy. I have an excel spreadsheet that has all the info of who is participating that I can send you via email. When people send me a PM (I have three new ones today to add), you add the names, and post the new list (minus the cabin numbers). The day of the cruise, you set up a time and place for everyone who is participating to come see you and get a list of everyone with their cabin numbers. You could even post the cabin numbers online, I just never did for privacy reasons.

Mac

Mac,
Can you send me the file, I will PM you my e-mail address and I will take it from here!

You are welcome. We ended up booking PHL to SEA and then YVR to PHL for the return flight. We had vouchers we rec'd last year for being bumped from a flight from LHR to PHL and the only thing we had to pay was $40/ticket for the international taxes. If we had booked r/t PHL-YVR it would have been an extra $720 total for the 3 of us. We can find a nice hotel and take Amtrak for a lot less than that.

I'll add you and your DW to the list in the first post.

Just wanted to check in. We are looking at the options of getting from Seattle to Vancouver. Have not decided what rout we will take yet. Has anyone else decided to fly into Seattle? How are you getting up to the ship?

Stacey

We're also flying into Seattle Sat. morning. We're thinking of Amtrak for Sun. morning. Can't remember where I have 2 nights booked in Vancouver. Still need to book the 1 night in Seattle. Ideas.....:confused3 ?
