August 7th, 2010 Mediterranean Cruise

We, meaning my family, were on the July 2007 Med cruise and I must say that it was fantastic. We are considering the 2010 cruise for 11 days but will do it through DVC and dollars. We spent a few days in Barcelona prior to boarding to adjust to the time zone change. We will probably go for a Cat 6 room since my wife will not go unless we have a veranda. It was wonderful to have it on our last cruise. Every morning going into port, we sat out there with coffee and croisants and got a good look our destination for the day. We got good use of the veranda. This time it will just be the two of us, so I will try and negotiate with DVC on the dollar difference between one and two people. :cool1: The price differential between one and two people for a cat 6 room is $1635, yet for DVC members, they ask for the same number of points per person. That really makes no sense, so I am going to speak to the DVC people and see what they can do. For those of you on this board that did not cruise in 2007, it is a wonderful experience and will provide lifelong memorie. Just one more point, look for private excursions and you will fare much better in ports such as Florence and Rome.:thumbsup2

Welcome -we did the July 28th 2007 med cruise and it was brilliant.

Good luck with DVC

Thanks for the welcome. I believe I remember you from the July 07 cruise. I will let you know how it goes with DVC. Considering the economy, I believe they will be willing to negotiate a bit.:) In any case, I agree with one of the posters about taking private excursions. We had our own driver in Naples for the day. Got to Pompei, and then to Revello, Positano, had lunch at a wonderful restaurant at the top of the mountain, then off to Sorento. It was a wonderful day. We used AP Tours. For Rome we again had our own driver, and did a private tour of the Vatican in the morning. Had a great lunch at a restaurant in downtown Rome, and then did a complete tour of all the sites including going into the Coliseum. Same for Vilafranche. Went to Eze, Monte Carlo, where we saw the guard changing. Cannes, St Paul de Venue and then back to the ship. I have to look up who we used for Rome and Villefranche, and post the names when I find the data. Am already doing research on the new ports.

I spoke with DVC yesterday about the points and cash option and why there is a difference between DVC and the Cruise Line itself. DVC calculates its points based upon double occupancy, and DCL does it based upon single occupancy. Now it makes sense, so we are set for the 8/7 2010 cruise, but this time it will be just my wife and I as we are celebrating oyr 30th anniversary on the ship

We will be joining you. It will be myself, Dh, DD (16), DS (14), DS (12) and DD (10). We live in Northern California.

We have 3 B2B cruise booked right now. The July 18th Northern Capitals & also the aug 30th 8 night. We will have to see as the time gets closer what ones we can truly afford.

We are in!

We booked a CAT. 6 - because that's the only way my wife would go!

Is anyone flyng in to Spain before the ship departs? Were looking for a place to stay for a night or two.

Also, any recommendations for the trip - or tips? PLease share.

This is our first trip to the Mediterranean!

Scott Christine, & Haley!

WELCOME, new cruisers!!!:cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

I do recommend coming into Barcelona a few days ahead of time -- it is a fantastic city, and you will have the time to get used to the time change before getting on the ship.

We stayed at Hotel Continental Palacete last time, just off Playa Catalunya at the top of Las Ramblas . . . it was great. They have sort of included club service, with a lounge fully stocked with food and drink 24/7, plus free internet terminals.

Hi Gang!

My family is also booked on this cruise and can't wait! It will be my husband and myself along with our two boys who will be 7 and 9. We are in room 6556. I will be curious as we get closer to hear about deals others may be getting on flights....we will be traveling from Boston or Providence to Barcelona the day before. When we booked we reserved a hotel room and the air through DCL but plan to price it both out separately when the time comes. Also, we have already started researching private tours and would love to get others opinions on the must sees.

I don't know how I am going to wait until August 2010...I am so excited!!:cheer2:

Welcome aboard! When I flew to Barcelona in 2007 for the DCL Med cruise, I found a great deal on airfare through Aer Lingus, of all things -- just had to change planes in Dublin but it was so much less expensive than any of the American carriers, or even Iberia, that it was worth it! I'm pretty sure they fly out of Boston, too, so keep them in mind. It just seems odd to use an Irish airline to go to Spain, but it worked for us.

Hi all!!:goodvibes

Hopefully we are going to become sailing buddies :cool1: . . . my DH and I want to book this cruise! We are on the Magic in May 2009 and so have to wait until then to book to get our discounts and OBC . . . I think. Did I see somewhere that we can book now to secure a stateroom, then once we get on board re-book it and they will transfer the deposit over? Is that possible? Would we lose any of the deposit? Do you have to get DCL to confirm that is OK before you book? Would we get the OBC as well as the 10% saving?

If anyone has experienced this I would be grateful for an answer, as I am desperate to book!!!

Thanks!:thumbsup2

Hi! I had booked the 8 day repo from Dover to Barcelona on the first day it was available (also booked the last Baltic and this one, but had existing reservations to transfer for those!) . . . when we were on the Magic over NYE, I booked it again for 10% off and OBC and then had my TA switch our room to that reservation and cancel the old one. If I had booked directly with DCL rather than the TA, they would have done it directly on the ship with no problem. So, as long as the price of this cruise doesn't go up more than 10% between now and May (and I doubt it will!) you can easily do this and get the advantage then. Even if you do use a TA, you will only have to have two reservations for a few days until the old one is canceled.

Good luck and let us know what you end up doing:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :cool1: :cool1:

Molto bene!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

Its so exciting!

I am going to have so many questions for you repeat cruisers :rotfl: First off . . . I was re-reading Deb Wills from AllEars report from the last Med Cruise, and she mentioned the Hilton she stayed at in Barcelona had a desk where you could check in for your cruise before getting to port. Is there any mention of whether that will happen again? Do Disney book for us / recommend any particular hotels which will have this facility?

Thanks!! :goodvibes

If you do pre-cruise hotel deals and transportation through DCL, they will provide this -- and I'm sure they will do it again this time. We booked on our own and took a taxi to the port, which worked well for us. As we get closer to summer of 2010 I'm sure the information will be released about pre-cruise hotel stays booked via DCL. I have a terrific TA who knows everything there is to know about DCL, so I could always give you her info if you wanted eventually to switch your reservation to her and get an additional OBC from her agency.
