August 7th, 2010 Mediterranean Cruise

Just got home from the Magic 7 day eastern that became a modified western double dip due to huricane paloma.
We rebooked onboard for this 11 day med cruise! Cat 6. Here's hoping we can budget our way there and not have to reschedule!

Wonderful! Welcome aboard! I think we are all hoping that we are able to do what we booked -- it's so far off and there are so many variables that could intervene. How did you enjoy your cruise -- was it strange having everything moved around due to the hurricane?

Welcome aboard! We did the same thing - and we were on the cruise the week before you were. I couldn't believe it when I heard your cruise was changed to a western. We had some bad weather in Grand Cayman from the hurricane, but were able to outrun it (so the captain said, lol).

Happy Turkey Day to all future Med cruising friends. We are off to WDW in the morning for two nights before our annual post-Thanksgiving cruise leaves on Saturday for the Western Caribbean. Hoping to "rebook" this sailing while on board in order to take advantage of discount and OBC.

TTFN!

Have a great trip and happy Thanksgiving! Let me know how you do with the rebooking for discount and OBC, and if they let you keep your cabin!

:goodvibes Yes...I've been lurking because alot can change between now and August 2010, but I cannot contain my interest or excitement:cloud9: for this cruise. I booked on day one and I just noticed that the price has gone up already over $1,000 bucks on our cabin. Missed out on the 07' Med, but don't want to miss this one:thumbsup2 . Does anyone have links to the 07' excursions and trip reports? Just weighing out :surfweb: doing some things on our own vs. DCL excursions.

Happy Holidays!:santa:

Hi Dizma Welcome aboard:thumbsup2

Here is a link to the thread that contains all the info about the blogs etc

Its actually on a stickie by the mods on the top of the maim cruise forum.

I;ve not checked the price of our cruise since we booked on day1 - although for us as the $ has dropped a lot against the £ it will be a lot more expensive for us:confused3

Welcome aboard! I know what you mean -- it seems a little strange on some level to be making plans so far in advance, but the planning can be almost as much fun as the trip itself, so let's make it last (and cross fingers that we can all go!).

The Med cruise we took last year was my favorite cruise ever -- probably my favorite vacation ever -- and we did not do any DCL excursions, so it is possible (although I know many feel more comfortable doing the the DCL excursions).

So glad to hear that your last Med cruise was "the best". Takes a little of the sting and guilt out of the $$$$. Yes, the planning is almost half the fun.......boy do we have lots to do!
Julie- can you share some of the things that your family did on your own and what you would do again? popcorn::
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Well, of the ports that we did last time that are on this cruise -- Barcelona is a wonderful walkable city. Just wandering the Barri Gotic, along Las Ramblas, walking through Eixample to see Gaudi's houses up to La Sagrada Familia, etc., etc. Naples -- last time we took the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii, and then on Sorrento (wonderful city) then took the train back. This time I think we will do Herculanium instead but then Sorrento again -- we loved it there. Rome -- took the train in last time, did Vatican Museum, St. Peter's, Trevi, Pantheon, Forum, Colusseum, and San Pietro in Vincoli all before taking the train back. We will take the train in again, but this time will do more wandering, go to the Spanish steps and Piazza Navona. La Spezia -- last time we hired a car and driver from Papillon tours, went to Pisa and then on to Florence to see Accademia, Uffizi, Duomo, etc. This time I think we will take the train to Cinque Terre and wander through those villages. Villefranche -- last time we took the train to Monaco and then back to Villefranche. This time I think we will take the train to Nice, then the bus to Eze, then the train back to Villefranche.

I found the public transport very easy to use, and liked being in control of what I saw and when I saw it. As we get closer to time if you have any specific questions about doing any of these things I am happy to share!

After reading Dizma's post about her cabin went up by $1000, I was curious and did a search on my Cat 10 room, which we also booked on Day 1. To my surprise, the price actually went down because DCL rescinded the fuel surcharge a couple of days ago. After doing some research on on DISBoard, I found out that if your fare hasn't increased since you booked, they will remove the fuel surcharge from your reservation. Otherwise, they offered some sort of OBC to be determined based on the price of oil per barrel. Anyway, since the Cat 10 hasn't increased, I called and saved $209. Just thought you may want to check yours and save $$ if you can.

Yes, I should have posted as well -- my TA sent an email that she had called DCL and they took the fuel surcharges off for me . . . :thumbsup2

Yes I was able to rebook on board and kept my cabin!!!! Got the 10 percent discount, removal of fuel charge and OBC. All in all, I saved more than $1500 including the obc.

We had a great cruise and I will be doing a trip report at some point. I'll let you all know when it's posted.

That's wonderful! Look forward to your trip report when you get around to it:goodvibes

We did - very quiet and nice. Kids are older, so not quite the ruckus it used to be!
