August 22nd 2009 Western Carribbean Anyone?

My 2 kids just came home today after being away at camp for 2 weeks. This may not qualify as best two weeks of my summer, but I certainly believe that I'll remember it as the easiest two weeks. I actually feel a little guilty for enjoying it so much.
The good news for me is that I am now off on a leave of absence until after Labour Day. The problem is that I need to find ways to entertain my kids until we leave for WDW in 5 weeks
I booked a van to take us from WDW to the port and I requested a stop so that I can pick up some wine (my evening beverage of choice). On DCL I also quite enjoy the daily 2 for 1 fruity drink specials at the bar in the afternoon.
I'm starting to feel a bit of panic as I read about everyones FE gifts. I really need to start working on this. Maybe I'll get my kids to help me out.

Well, sorry everyone for not posting anything in a while. I was paniking because we were not able to find my younger son's consular report of birth abroad. This made us unsure of whether or not we would even be sailing. Can't leave one behind, right??? Anyway, we got his passport renewed instead so all is right again.

We are definately interested in participating in the fish extenders. Just wondering about how many are participating so we can plan accordingly.

I know we were added to the list of cruisers but didn't know if that included the FE list or not.

Can't wait to see everyone onboard!

Hi Angela, not included you for FE but will add you later today when I get some time. If you look at the list here all the participating families have a red FE after their name. There is also one more family to add which will be in final list you recieve.
I think its about 19 families now.

I know we had discussed this way back when, but did we decide to do something to identify ourselves to each other..I know we spoke about bracelets and tshirts but was anything decided...should we all try and wear the same color or something for our meet...what about name tags or something like that..any ideas????

I am going to make us some green Mickey head badges with our names on, and DIS user names.

We're not putting our name or room in with the gift. I don't think it's a big deal if yo choose to, personal preference.

Ah yes, Scout Camp. We are organizing the final details now as I will be heading out soon as well for a week in the wilderness. I may take over full time as Scoutmaster at camp, but I surely will after final campfire.

Thinking of Formal Nights, and I have seen discussions across the boards, so I am wondering what our general disposition is going to be. Cruising the boards, I have seen that some are choosing now that khakis and polos are formal, or they are ignoring formal night due to the airline baggage embargo -- I mean restrictions -- for us common folk.

Fully believing that no woman can resist a man, especially her husband, dressed to the nines , I am one for the full tuxedo, if it did not cost more to rent one for a week than to buy one any more, and if I had more occasions to wear it outside of the cruise. I also would be one to show up in full kilt kit if I could find one in McCarthy for less than twice a tuxedo. Having said that, I am being convinced that I should only bring a suit and some shirts, and that I might fore-go ties even. Are there others who will stick with me that formal night is something to hold dear, and that while one may claim their man is stunning when dressed, there is nothing to behold like ones lady when she is dressed to kill.

Am I living in the classic age? Do I need to get modern? Should I bring even my suit coat if that is the way? Is just a blazer enough? What is the consensus of this think tank regarding formal night?

I agree with you - I really want to put on a tuxedo for formal night, I want my DS in a tuxedo, and I want my DW and DD dressed in appropriate female attire.

But I cannot fit into my tuxedo, and I doubt I'll ever be able to. I've only had two occasions to wear it in the 17 years I've been married, so I don't think it's worth the money to buy another tux. And, as you said, renting can be as expensive as buying.

I have a suit, and I will wear it for formal night. My son has a small suit, and he will wear it as well.

For semi-formal night I am undecided - should I buy a sports jacket and wear it with some khakis and a dress shirt without tie, or should I wear the shirt and tie without a jacket?

Opinions would be appreciated.

In the future, it is my dream to do a transatlantic passage on the QM2. Preferably in a Princess Grills suite. If I ever take that trip, I will absolutely be bringing a tuxedo.

My Dream Cruise is not the one on Woodward Ave, where it all started, no, it is the 30 Day Ring of Fire Cruise. You bet your bottom dollar that I would have a tux on that cruise. Alas, I fear that I will be in a suit on this ship. Perhaps a nice navy blazer with a tropical polo shirt and khaki pants, for the other nights. I may still get voted down and be there in skivvies and a tie.

Bad News on the B.B.D. in Grand Cayman, I was reading the customs and immigration information at the bottom of the DCL Duty Free Price List that somebody scanned in. It said that you could purchase this or that at whatever port and bring it into the USA.

The concern was that the ship does not accept any deliveries to the dock, due to US Security Protocols, and somehow this prevented anyone from purchasing any liquor in Grand Cayman. Perhaps they have a law regarding carrying it through the streets and there is a conflict ?!?!

I may have to research this further, unless someone knows.

Update:
It appears, unless things have changed that there is an impasse, that you cannot purchase duty free and consume it, therefore it is prohibited to carry it out of the store. Cruise ships cannot accept deliveries of bottled liquid. Ergo, no duty free for you. Of course, they may realize the money they are losing and have a D.F. in the fenced port area or something now, who knows. Key West will not be D.F. because you are in the U.S.A., but if you are in need, it is an early stop. So it looks like Mexico is your option for stuff to bring home with you.

For what it's worth, my tux has been hired, and I can't wait to try it on. Having never had the opportunity to ever wear a tuxedo before, I'm looking forward to dressing up, and playing at being James Bond for the evening!

BlueMarlin, DH and DS will be in black dress pants, shirt and tie. Although I would love to see them both in a tux (even though DS would be miserable), I just can't stomach the cost to rent them. DH's only suit is an odd color and I want them in black so we can somewhat match for a nice family picture. There is a slight chance that we may go out and buy another suit, but DH likes the idea of just a shirt and tie. Seeing him in that alone will make my heart melt

In order to save luggage space I've rented tuxes/shoes for my DH and my DS. My DH can re-wear his tux when we go to Palos. Last year when we cruised I bought lovely but impractical dresses for my DD and I. The dresses were both heavy and prone to wrinkle. This year when I went shopping for dresses my two main criteria were light weight and wrinkle free. Our dresses are a little casual up against a tux but our luggage will be happy.

I was so looking forward to wearing a tux this trip. BUT, luggage restrictions and the like (meaning my expanding waistline) have resulted in my most likely only bringing suits that I know fit me.

We did buy DS (5) a suit for the trip for ($30) figured he'd only wear it on the cruise but he was too cute in it to resist.
