August 2012 Car Rental Thread

Try calling the customer service number. This happened to me in May with Alamo - by the time I added a day, the rates had gone back up so making a new res. or modifying my existing doubled the rate.:scared:

When I called the Insider's number, they added the day at the same daily rate as what I had already booked, rather than the new rate.

I just checked my dates with Dollar, and they are over $100/week more than yesterday. Are you an Express member with Dollar? I suggest joining, then calling the CS number.:thumbsup2

Good luck!pixiedust:

Thanks for the tip!! :goodvibes

But to be honest, I am really thinking about just sticking with the buses at this point. Since I added the extra day, I don't want to spend more $$ on a car. Pop has always had some of the best bus service on property in our experience. Plus, the idea of getting into a boiling hot car that has been sitting in a parking lot in August isn't helping influence my decision! :rotfl:

But I will still lurk around on the thread in case a fab deal come up. My motto is never say never....

The Kayak rate for renting a car from Shades of Green to MCO through National is now available through the Nationalcar.com website. You don't have to go through Kayak anymore. PLUS, if you join the Emerald Club you get an additonal 10% off of your rental and no fee for an additional driver. So, with using the $35 off coupon (ND8578ADT), my reservation from 8/17 - 8/23 dropped from $85.xx to $74.xx for a full size car. :cool1:

I usually book through Costco's site too, but someone else suggested I try searching the rates through Alamo with the $35 off. The Costco ID is listed on the car rental home page on Costco's travel website. It is 7014627. The coupon that Costco searches for is a free 1 car class upgrade. The $35 off coupon is a better deal. So I went directly to Alamo and entered the Costco ID and the $35 coupon code. Good luck!

Thanks! I will try that :dance3:

I don't blame you. If I had to pay over $130 or so for our trip, I may choose to go without. I like having a car, but it isn't mandatory for us at WDW. I have to figure in the cost of valet, as I hate the boiling hot car, too!;) (I realize this isn't an option at Pop)

Yes! When I checked National this morning, I found the same deal - $74 for 6 nights from SOG, with my Emerald Club membership ID. I dropped the Kayak res. as this deal is $11 cheaper.

My Dollar res. is $116 - I have to decide if the convenience of driving out of MCO, rather than using ME and picking up at SOG, is worth $42.:scratchin

Woo hoo! My price came down - from $106 to $83 something. Only a 2 night rental...but every penny counts!

hm. The rate to pick up at Shades is getting better and better.....Still, with hiring a car service from the airport and tip I still come close to the rate I have through enterprise.

My 9 night rental (picking up at MCO on 8/7, dropping off at MCO 8/16) just dropped to $209 for a standard, taxes included. I prefer a full size car, however the general consensus seems to be that there is no "standard isle" at MCO, and if that's the case, I may be choosing from the full size isle anyhow. There is a difference of $5 if I were to book the ressie as wanting a full size car. My thought is why pay the additional $5 when I may be choosing a full size car in the first place? Does this make sense to anyone?

Question for gmeh1 (if you are around...) - I'm wondering if I should book a full size to be sure that I am able to score a full size car at MCO, rather than booking a standard with hopes of driving away in a full size as I heard Alamo at MCO has no standard isle. Our flight arrives at 9:35 p.m - if there are no delays.

Also - let's say I book a standard at Alamo - and the cars that are left in the lot at that time of night (10 pm or so) are all awful. Would I be able to chose a car from the National isle? And if yes, would I be choosing from a standard or full size isle - as in does National have a "standard isle".

Sorry for the barrage of questions - but last year I got a super rate with Alamo for small SUV (was supposed to be a Ford Escape or comparable), but by the time we got there (11:30 p.m. after our flight was delayed) , the only small SUV's in that particular isle were some type of Jeeps. There were 4 left and all were awful. We didn't know we could have asked to choose from the National small SUV isle without an additional charge, so we just took one of the Jeeps and made due with it. It was very disappointing....

Thanks for all the info you provide!

We've already got a rental booked, but looking at some of the postings here I'm wondering if this actually is a decent deal or whether to keep plugging numbers :confused3

Arriving MCO late evening, Aug 7, taking ME in to (and back from) ASMu, picking up car on the 8th. Just 2 of us, but a compact is a tight fit.

So... 8/8 - 8/14, Alamo, midsize, AARP & Entertainment book free day, pickup & return Dolphin: $221

Enlighten me, oh wise ones, lest I spend good money that could be better be put to use paying for food ;)

I just tried National for pick-up at Shades of Green and dropping off at the MCO airport for your dates and get $85.58 total for a full size car. That is using the Kayak corporate code 5007751 and ND8578ADT coupon for $35 off.

If you are picking up and dropping off on property anyway, you might as well try National at shades of green. Full size for a week was under $100 dollars. Check back through the thread.:)

Just checked your dates. If you pick up on Aug. 8, and return it to Mco on the 15th ( wasn't sure when you were flying out). The total is $164 for either compact, mid size, standard or full size. This was without any codes. There are codes out there that will save you $35 and if you sign up for National's Emerald Club, you might save more and get and additional driver free.

I just booked on the National website - full-size car, pick up at SOG 8/24 at 10am, drop off at MCO 9/3 at 5pm for a grand total of $188, using the $35 coupon code. Anyone find anything better?

I tried the SOG/MOC code and got a fullsize for $165 for my dates at the end of August. But right now I'm also holding a midsize SUV reservation using the KLM code and $35 coupon for $238. For $70 I'd rather not hassle with getting to SOG or the CCC, let alone having to then turn around and do my grocery stop later.

I wish the SOG pick up worked for me. We land at MCO and go to Universal first. So we'll pick up the car and drive ourselves over.
I'd have to rent a car from MCO for those three days, return it to MCO, use ME to get to Disney, get a taxi over to SOG, and rent another. I'd lose half a day with all of that aggregation so it's simply not worth it.

I told myself if we couldn't get a car for the 5 of us for 200 or under I wasn't renting one and we'd use a taxi to and from Universal and then ME. Luckily I found one for 206.
