I am looking go at the end of August 2010. I sometimes get a discount code. But, when should I book the room and when do deals for August usually come out?
You can go ahead and book now, and just watch for a good deal to come out or a PIN to arrive in your mail/inbox. As soon as you see the deal/code, give Disney a call and get it applied to your reservation. Provided they have rooms at your resort available to the discount, you can have it applied to the ressie.
Travel agents will also keep their eye out for a public code to come available, and try to get them applied to your reservation. It's part of our job, to save you money. However, if YOU get the PIN, then you need to let your TA know so they can call it in.
We are planning on going in August 2010 also but I'm not booking anything till April, in the past that is when they have offered Free Dining so we just thought we would wait till book then and see what happens.
Booked yesterday for a stay in August 2010. This is because for this particular trip I REALLY REALLY care about my resort and room category, and I don't want there to be no availability if I wait. I know I can always make changes, but this way I know I'm going to be able to stay where I want.
I usually try to wait a little longer...the fewer early bookings Disney gets, the more likely they are to offer steep discounts.
We're going next August too CANNOT WAIT. I haven't booked yet though, I figured i'd hold out for a few more months so Disney can let some good deals come through....... like free dining. Not sure how long i'm going to really hold out though, i'd like to get it booked and start paying on it.
I am booked already for the 13Th-24TH. I didn't even bother fooling myself into thinking I could wait until April to book it. I am way too impatient for that. I will definitely be watching out for a discount, mainly hoping for free dining. I am more than willing to pay a few nights of room only, if FD would start on the 15TH for now I have a package booked room, tickets and DDp.
Rooms usually get a little cheaper during the whole month of August. Free dining usually gets offered toward the end of August and it is less crowded in the parks as the month progresses. We are planning an early August vacation since my son will be leaving for school in mid-August.
We just booked for August 16th - 23rd. We too are hoping for Free Dining. They started this year in the Middle of August, so I am hoping that it continues for next year.
I get to spend my Birthday at Disney and I get to chose where we eat and what we do.
I'm booked for August 4th-11th. I'm hoping for the 4/3 deal. I'm booking our December 2010 trip sometime in the next couple of weeks as well. Waiting for me is not an option. I want to make sure I get the resort and room category I want.

I would definitely book now. We previously stayed at CR but booked a year ahead and so glad we did because the garden wing rooms are the first to book. This year they have also sold out for Aug 2010 already but we are going to try another resort this time. We have booked already for next August. When promotions come out they will always honor it and deduct the price later on. Better to book now and put down $200 then to wait and have less availability.
I was considering moving my trip up a month or two if the buy 4 get 3 deal came out, but I just priced it for March, just to get an idea. Our trip will be much chgeaper to wait for free dining, so i think I am going to tell my DH to put in for the dates off now. I am pretty concrete that we will be going for hopefully free dining.
We booked our August trip last week.
We are planing on Aug 22-28th.
I may have to push it up a week though due to my college classes staring that week.
How busy is August with crowds?
We will probably have to switch to Aug 15-21st. I see on the crowd calendar it lists mostly 7's
Well this year it was first week of free dining, and I am hoping it will be again in 2010. But anyway, that week is pretty busy, due to everyone trying to get in FD without taking their kids out of school. From what I have read the following week was definitely better, crowd wise.
Last year we went Aug 23-29 and the crowds were manageable, never waited more than 10-15 mins for a ride, sometimes not at all. I too am concerned as we are booked for Aug 15-22 because i also have an older daughter who may be starting college so thought it would be best to book earlier just in case. I'd like to hear any more thoughts on this also.

Since she will be a freshman August 15 might be too late, some colleges require the students to be on campus by the 10th or 11th. I may have the same situation with my DS so I booked 7/31 - 7/7/10.
