August 2010 car rental

Yeah, I don't quite get the skyrocketing rates for August. I'm glad I locked in with Alamo for about $160 for a week (midsize) a few months ago. The prevailing rate is about triple that now.

For those of you that don't have anything, my gut feeling is the rates will come down somewhat....but, I would also encourage you to make a non-binding reservation now, even though the rates are high. I wouldn't think they would, but they could go even higher...rental rates are definitely wacky.

I have to say that prices are absolutely INSANE this year. I have a car booked for two weeks at $300 inclusive I booked back in March but now I don't think I need a car that long. BUT ... I can't find anything for much less for just a week. Yikes! Plus, I would have to fly in a day earlier than I had planned. *sigh* I absolutely need the car for at least a week because we go to Tampa to see family.

It's hard to believe but I have a car I just booked OVER CHRISTMAS for only $113 per week. August is almost twice as much!

OK guys ... here's a trick that worked for people last December. Book with Budget via the DIS link here: http://www.wdwinfo.com/discounts/discounts-transportation.htm#rental Click on the car in the upper right and the code will populate automatically.

For your pick-up location choose "W. LANDSTREET - M01" which is a non-airport location near the Florida Mall. You will need to take a cab to the car but the savings may be worth it. It's only about 7 miles from MCO.

You may return to any location in the Orlando area. For instance you may return to the Doubletree on Hotel Blvd or to the airport.

A 7-day intermediate is $161 plus taxes but they are less than at the airport so I get a total of $196 for the week. It's not great, especially when you need to take a cab. BUT it's better than other rates .
