August 16th Disney Magic Cruise

August 18th – Enjoy A Day At Sea

Nothing beats a beautiful day at sea on the Disney Magic. While many people prefer the port days, Travis and I have always loved the days at sea. There is something wonderful about being on a huge ship in the middle of the ocean with tons of great food, entertainment, and people! Plus, Disney really loads up on the events on sea days.

Since we had dined last night in Animator’s Palate we were to have our Character Breakfast in Parrot Cay this morning. We have experienced this on our two other seven-day Magic cruises but we still enjoy going. It’s a lot of fun to sit back and watch the characters express themselves and their unique personalities. It’s also great to watch all the other guests attempt to get the required wrist action down to twirl the napkins to the Breakfast Hand Jive! (Not as easy as it seems!) On our past cruises we had purchased pictures of us with Mickey at the breakfast and this cruise we hoped to add to our collection. We couldn’t remember if Scott and Donald would be joining us this morning and so we sat in our usual dinning pattern across from each other. This proved to be a mistake because as the characters came around to our table the photographers would take pictures of Travis and myself individually rather than as a couple. Oh well, we’ll have to wait until the next cruise to get more pics! :) Although we didn’t purchase any of the pictures, we each posed with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, and Dale.

I think we were still stuffed from Champagne Brunch and dinner last night because we hardly ate anything. Plain cheese omelet and hash browns for the both of us. Of course, seeing as this was a sea day it wasn’t as if we were going to go hungry! One of the things that I’ve noticed on DCL is that you quickly become accustomed to being fed very large meals about four (or more) times a day!

We left the Character Breakfast relatively early (it was still quite full) and headed down to Rockin’ Bar D for Spa Bingo. On our cruise in November we spent WAY too much money on this addictive game and decided to limit ourselves this time around. We purchased a Bonus Pack of plays for $35.00, grabbed a seat, and hoped for the best! Trevor and Sheshe hosted the game and they did a good job. (Not quite as good as Robin and April in November, but good none the less.) They kept everyone entertained with little antics thrown in between calling out the numbers. They were also all dressed in robes from the Vista Spa, which was a funny touch. Yeah Baby seemed to be the phrase of the day and the kids took it to a new level! Travis and I have never won bingo and we kept our streak during this game as well. Hmmm, maybe next cruise we’ll have more luck?

After Bingo we headed to Deck 4 and grabbed a couple of those exceptionally comfortable loungers. Disney should really consider selling these things because they are some of the most comfortable chairs I have ever sat in. I have heard many others comment about them as well. Perhaps it’s a combination of the setting and the chairs themselves! We sat on Deck 4 for quite some time just enjoying the passing sea. Just off the starboard side of the Magic was a Carnival cruise ship and Travis and I both remarked that we felt sad for the people on her. Especially because we knew that the customers on that ship were sitting on the decks with a magnificent view of the Disney Magic. ;)

We grabbed lunch at Lumiers’s that afternoon. I had a great mushroom risotto and Travis enjoyed a Ruben on white bread instead of rye! (Don’t ask me!) The wait team were very attentive and didn’t even blink at the request. We also tried Caribbean Lemonade which was quite tasty and very refreshing! For desert we both had Key Lime Pie.

Looking over the Personal Navigator, which was always kept handy in a pant or short pocket, we decided to attend the “Art of the Disney Magic” Navigator Series tour. We had never attended one of these prior to this and were pleasantly surprised. The tour was hosted by Que and began in Palo. It was here that Que mentioned that a third ship was in the works for Disney Cruise Lines but that no concrete information (i.e. name, date of completion, home port) was available. The tour itself focused on the architectural design, decorating, and artwork of the Disney Magic bestowed by the Imagineeres. We discovered fascinating tidbits like the number of signs used on the ship (believe it or not, it’s 27,000); the number of different carpet designs used (I can’t remember the exact number but Que said the industry average for a given cruise ship is 12 while the Disney Magic is in the triple digits); and the definition of Que’s favorite nautical term, Poop Deck. The tour covered Palo, the Nautical Hallway, the Buena Vista Theater, the Atrium, Beat Street, Animator’s Palate, Deck 4, Disney’s Oceaneer Club, Disney’s Oceaneer Lab, and several other areas. It was a lot of fun and very informative. At the end of the tour they also handed out little booklets that are entitled “Art of the Disney Magic Self-Guided Tour.” In this book you can find more facts about the art found throughout the ship and lots of historical information about the cruise line and ships.

We had hoped to attend Donna’s Future Cruise Presentation at 3:00 but missed it because of the tour. Instead we headed up to Deck 10 to do some walking and to catch the end of the pool games taking place at Quiet Cove. These are always a lot of fun to watch (although I wouldn’t dare participate!) and include such major tasks as stuffing as many floating Ping-Pong balls into your swim ware as you can within a limited time and as other contestants are doing the same.

Tonight was Formal Night and we wanted to get some good pictures so we headed down to our stateroom to get ready for the show and dinner. The show was Hercules The Muse-Ical and I wasn’t going to miss it! The first time I saw this show (in May of 2000) I really didn’t care for it but I have loved it more and more over the past three cruises. The cast does a great job of blending current events into the story line and I love Hades and Pain and Panic. Very, very good show not to be missed. Although I’m not too sure if it is as entertaining for the little-ones as it is for adults. Since the lines were so long for the picture with Mickey and Minnie in their formal wear we headed t the show and figured we could catch them afterwards.

Right after the show we headed to Deck 4 where Mickey and Minnie had been stationed. At the time they were only doing pictures of guests against the plain backdrop but soon Mickey and Minnie were spotted coming down the hall. We got in line and managed to get our pictures just before dinner.

Parrot Cay in suit and tie may seem a little mismatched but we enjoyed it! The menu in Parrot Cay is quite varied and I love the tropical feel to the place. Scott mentioned that he can’t help but think of the Tiki Room whenever he dines in this restaurant and I totally agree! This comment sparked a long conversation about the differences and similarities between the Disneyland Resort and the Walt Disney World Resort and we all agreed that Travis and I needed to travel out to California to visit the former at least once. Never having seen Walt’s original creation seems to be a bit of a crime for a self-certified Disney Fanatic. Travis and I both said that we’ll visit the park as soon as we can convince ourselves to spend a week at Disneyland instead of on DCL. (I don’t know when that will happen but we’ll keep working on it!) Kool Breeze was playing live music in the vein of Jimmy Buffet and Bob Marley and we washed the night away with Disney’s own Iron Horse Label, Fairy Tale Champagne! Cest la vie!

Travis and I took our leave of Scott and Don and headed down to Rockin’ Bar D to see Dan Riley. Although I don’t understand a lot of what he does (I’m not a huge music buff) he does do a lot of things that are quite funny. He was taking some requests from the audience and by the end o the show he had them quite stirred up. After his show the 70’s Flashback Disco Night started and Travis and I hung around to see the crazy “Groovy Staff” as they are always a hoot. Ellen and Que do a great job of getting into character and Sheshe was hilarious in her skin-tight gold body suit and her afro wig.

After leaving the 70’s Dance Party we spent some time up on Deck 10 and then on Deck 4. We love strolling the walkways at night. I was quite tired and retired to the stateroom before Travis. He may have been up for quite some time after I went to sleep because I never heard him. I was fast asleep having Disney Dreams, I’m sure.

Great report!! Two questions....was "Andy" still on the ship. He was our Bingo King and hosted all the bingo games. I am wondering if he left. I don't remember a Travis. Also, we didn't play "stuff the ping pong balls" at Pool games. Who was your host for that event?

Trevor was the host of Spa Bingo and Sheshe helped. I'm trying to remember an Andy....

I believe the pool games were hosted by Ellen. And, I think the object of the game was to get as many ping png balls to your side of the pool. Maybe people just started "stuffing" them in order to carry more!

Sorry about all of the spelling mistakes in this one guys. It was late and I should have been in bed I think!

:)

Spelling mistakes or not, I want to read more! We just booked for March 27th'04 and I hope to read as many reviews as possible! Thanks for taking the time to write.......and ......keep them coming!

It's really fun reading these Jason - I feel like I'm reliving your entire cruise.

For the other poster and because I spent WAY more time at Bingo than I would have liked, Yes, Andy is still the Bingo King on the regular times.

You write a great report. It's so enticing!(sic?)

Hi Son!
Next time we cruise together, you boys have to sit with your Momma Rae, ya' hear me!!!! I'll get that couples picture for you!!!!!

Sounds like you both had a great day and evening - now, you know that I'd love to try that bathing suit stuffing contest - especially now that I lost the chest!!!!! Seems like I am floating in material when I hit the water rather than floating in flesh!

We are hoping to take our first DVC 7 day cruise. Two adults and a 7 year old. We are thinking about the weather. Anyone who has been east or west on the Cruise please respond, what can we expect?

What if we don't want to go ashore? (I can't imagin) But just in case we play to hard on the ship. Are we able to stay on board.

We will probably book a Deluxe Family Stateroom with Verandah (level 4) Besides the gratuity, what additional expenses would can we expect.

Thanks for the insite.
