August 13, 2011 Med - Mickey's Marauding Mates

Hummmm. I can't actually order anything ONLINE either. I have to either call an 800 number or I have to print out an order form & fax it in. Do you mean you're not even allowed to call them? That's absurd!:sad2: I think they just leave a slip in the stateroom to be able to pick it up somewhere. I haven't decided yet if I'm calling them or faxing the form but of course we can order an extra 1 or 2 for you. How many did you want? I wonder if I call them if I can get them to just leave 1 slip in our stateroom & 1 slip in yours?

That is exactly what I mean - I can call or fax but they can't take any orders from me because their computer system won't let them! I was thinking only one glass because of carrying home but we were planning on sharing it (I think!)

Mikki - just let me know sometime what you want to do about the mugs (1 or 2) and give me your cabin # and I'll call to see if they can be delivered to your room!

JEFF!! OMG!! :rotfl: I got some scoop this evening about our first 'A' meet this weekend! We are gonna get CREAMED!! :rotfl: The other team has a 15-18 yr old boy (he is 16) who holds all the county records in every stroke & he is Nationally ranked at # 160 in the 200 Free with a time of 1:37.05!! His time on the 50 Free is 20.45!! He's just 16!!!!!! He is only ranked #386 in the 100 Free BUT he is # 101 in the 100 Back @ 47.95!! But this boy is a Backstroker for sure bcuz he is ranked # 51 in all of USA Swimming in the 200 back with a time of only 1:43.16! :scared1: That is only a few seconds off my DS's 100 back!! :rotfl: :lmao: In comparison my DS is ranked # 23,312 in the 50 Back and # 40,694 in the 100 back and # 48,201 in the 100 Free!!! Our team does have a couple boys who are ranked between 5,000 and 10,000 but they're NOWHERE NEAR this kid!! Holy Moly! This kid will barely get WET before he's done!! This is going to be something to watch for sure! I help out with the team photos so I will see if I can catch one of him. He is NOT a Fly or Breast stroker as much tho (ranked #299 in LC fly & 6,665 in 100 Breast) and those are 2 of the easiest strokes to photograph so I'll try to catch him!

THEN the good news. I found out that our new PT coach who the county is sending over 2 or 3 times a week (the one I had heard was supposed to be good), well SHE is this kids year round coach at RMSC!! SOOOO, hopefully DS will get a few practices in with her this summer which would be really cool. I mean, obviously, this kid has a special talent but she's gotta have something to do with it too. She was only there on Monday this week & she was working with the 11/12's. Now she's at a meet in CA with her top RMSC swimmers. I am hoping to see her in action next week tho with DS's group. Got my fingers crossed.

Anxious to hear how your DD's swim camp meet goes! Hope she's learned a bunch!!

Hi Annie - many thanks! Make it two please and we are in the cabin you sort of got for us: 6634.

The picture on the other thread of the mugs swayed me!

Wow that's amazing! My DD has gone to a few "meet the Olympian" clinics and its' always amazing to watch them just fly through the water looking like they aren't even putting any effort. Great that your son will get a chance to work out with this coach. Coaching definitely makes a difference - we had some bad coaches before coming to our current team and it's been night and day in terms of DD times and motivation. I spoke with her a bit last night and she IS learning a lot. They videotape them and then critique each stroke and give them a "report card" on what to work on. She said she already corrected her butterfly kick based on that input. She clearly was having a great time and did more dry land than she ever did. Now to keep that motivation going - hoping she doesn't want to ditch practice the next two days. I can see her using the camp as an excuse to skip - but my goal is to get her there at least one of the two days and then Monday and Tuesday before we leave for WDW. I guess we ought to start thinking about packing soon. :rotfl:

I finally remembered to note my cabin - 6520. Looks like a lot of us are on deck 6. :)

Finally got a chance to pop in here to say hey...had a busy day. DS had his 8th grade promotion this morning & of course swim practice this evening - we start morning practices tomorrow morning at 7:30 now that school is out. DS is begging me to let him skip tomorrow am but at the end of the Friday practice is when they announce who's swimming what for the meet on Saturday. DS's year round club often videos during practice and they're offering some 1 hour video clinics on Fridays over the summer ($30 each or 3 for $80) but I don't think I'm gonna sign up for any. Tomorrow they have 1 for starts & 1 for Breaststroke - which he could really use but he's begging for some time off. But the videos help them see what they're doing wrong.

I went out & did some shopping today (NOT for me! It's Father's Day this weekend doncha know).:rolleyes1 Not doing a whole lot (keeping this trip in mind). Picked up a box of golf balls & a new glove then went to the Cigar store & got him 1/2 doz. cigars. That's IT. All he's gettin'. :goodvibes

OK, it's bedtime...gotta roll.

Well, had our first am practice. It stormed over night & was very cloudy & cool...the pool water has officially cooled off again so DS is HATING it.:headache: He is toooo thin (up to a whopping 93 pounds). As if his breast stroke wasn't bad enough already now he refuses to put his head down into the water on his breaststroke because the water is cold so it sucks worse than usual!! :headache: I told him he's not doing himself any favors & that he's going to develop a bad habit if he keeps this up.:sad2: It is supposed to start warming up again to around 90 starting tomorrow so hopefully the water temp will improve. Found out the super fast Olympic hopeful kid is NOT swimming this meet because of this big meet in CA so we will do better in the meet but won't get to see him swim.

OK, need to get moving on other stuff.

(Mikki - I will ask DCL about including your room on my order when I call them.:thumbsup2)

Hey Jeff! I got an email today from USA Swimming with a link to this Santa Clara Invitational meet. I'll copy the link below (hope it will work).

http://www.usaswimming.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabId=2062&Alias=Rainbow&Lang=en

VERY cool...live video of the events...results link...Psych Sheets etc. All the big Olympic swimmers are there. I looked up this John Conger kid and he was seeded at #26 in the 200 Back...meanwhile Michael Phelps is seeded # 5 and Ryan Lochte is # 4. They are 10 years older than him so I think this kid has some great potential!! While I am glad his summer team won't CREAM us tomorrow I am bummed to not get to see him swim in person. I'm hoping to catch the webcast tomorrow for this backstroke if I can. Hopefully with the time difference I can figure it out. I thought the link was kinda neat.

(I looked at the results from the 100 Free earlier today & this kid was seeded in 152nd and finished in 29th!!)

Where is everyone? Packing? Shopping? Planning?? Ya'll leave me out here to talk to myself about swimming all day!!

I'm here! I can't contribute much to the swimming discussion though. Although...I am looking forward to getting some use out of my new bathing suit that I bought for this trip! :rotfl:

I've also bought some new outfits for DD and I to wear. Shopping for the cruise is our new favourite hobby. Not that there is much left to spend after paying for our flights! Yikes!

My parents leave next week for their Alaskan cruise on the Wonder. They are really excited. I can't wait to hear all about it!

I was wondering if someone could tell me if there is any food available when you first get on the ship, and if so, where would one find it? We have 10:30 boarding time. Also, will Lumiere's and Parrot Cay be open for breakfast and lunch during the cruise? Thanks!

 Shopping! I need to stop!! :rotfl: It's my other favorite sport next to swimming! :rotfl: OH, and I will talk about absolutely anything! Don't be bashful - if you've got something to say come tell us about it!! :goodvibes

Boarding and food....the time we had to select for the port arrival is just for checking in at the port. They probably won't start any actual BOARDING until between 12 and 1:00. And then they will start with the Concierge people first. And yes, once onboard there is food. Topsiders buffet and Parrot Cay I believe will both be open (I think Parrot Cay is also set up as a buffet). Our first cruise was a cluster and we missed lunch altogether. It was the first summer they did the Mexican Riviera out of LA and we booked their transportation to the port but the bus company they used were less than efficient and ran very late. The terminal was a mess and very disorganized. By the time we got ONTO THE SHIP we had missed lunch!! (I was TICKED!) The last time we cruised we just hit Topsiders so I haven't been to the Parrot Cay lunch yet. I'm sure someone else can chime in about it (Jeff or JP who have cruised more).

Lumiere's should be open for a sit-down breakfast but I am not sure if there are only certain mornings or not. I DO love to go there at least once for some Eggs Benedict tho!! :goodvibes We mostly hit the buffet for breakfasts as we usually have early excursions...although we may order some room service to save time this go around. I've never ordered room service but I'm worried about time in the mornings - especially on those tender ports like La Spezia where we have to wait our turn if we don't book a DCL excursion. I hear we have to go get in line for a ticket at like 7:30 if we don't want to wait for open tendering at 9:00.:sad2:

Hello - we are on the Aug 13 cruise! We are a family of 5; Spencer, Diane, Alyssa (11), Britney (6), Kaitlyn (6). I'm sure our girls would love to have some playmates...especially the 11 yr old. We are still trying to figure out our excursions... This is our third Disney Cruise and the kids first trip to Europe. DH and i used to visit Europe every year until we had kids. We will also be celebrating our 25th anniversary on Aug 16. i see we have some swimmers on the cruise. Our oldest daughter also swims. Diane

Welcome aboard!

Sorry for being MIA - been preparing for and running the village quiz last night. It went really well thankfully and hopefully we have raised a bit of money too!

Question for previous cruisers - do the shutters photographers take pictures with your camera too like they do in WDW? The prices seem very steep even compared to WDW!

Well thinking ahead I now have my January trip to WDW completely booked - we are staying 7 nights at Kidani followed by 13 nights in BLT. Woo Hoo!

Welcome Diane!

My husband and I are celebrating our 26th anniversary on August 17th with a dinner at Palo. Should be a memorable occasion! I hope you have something special planned for your anniversary on the 16th.

I'm still on the fence about the DCL excursions or doing the ports on our own. I know we COULD do the ports on our own but that means lots of research and planning on my part, along with writing lots of notes and taking them with me. DH will gladly go either way but the planning and research will fall solidly on me.

DH could tell I was stressing about it and finally said "Just book DCL excursions if it will make your life easier. Let them do all the work". He has a point. What to do????

Are we the only couple cruising without kids??? Our kids are 23 and 21, both out of college and living on their own. They are not coming on the cruise with us. We LOVE kids but we aren't in that stage of our lives anymore. It will be fun to see all the kids on the ship - seeing the wonder in their eyes is awesome. Now that my kids are older, I don't really have younger kids that I regularly interact with and I do miss it. So that aspect will be fun. I'd just hate to be the only 40-something people on the ship cruising without kids.

OK, Annie, did I give you enough to chat about? I aim to please! LOL!

We are getting ready to start packing for our trip - we are leaving Wednesday! :scared1:Looks like it is going to be hotter than Hades this time but it as the last time DD danced at disney too. I think the heat index that day was 125. Maybe we can beat that this time. :lmao:

Yes Parrot Cay is a buffet and we almost always go to it - kind of a tradition since it's where we went the first time we cruised. We did go to Topsiders one time - on a 3 nighter - but that was because we were determined to make the best of every second on the ship. Not sure what we'll do this time but I'm betting Parrot Cay.

We got room service almost every morning when we were in port on the Med last year. And then I'd run upstairs and supplement it with some additional items if someone was in the mood for something different than what we ordered. It was a really good time saver, for sure.

Welcome! I have a 12 year old (going to be 13 in September) and she is the DD who swims. If you wanted them to connect via email - I can PM you my DDs email address. She is pretty experienced on this ship and we did the 11 night Med last year too. We are doing DCL excursions in most ports because overall they were very good last year and the "no worry" ease of getting back to the ship sold me on the extra cost especially in the Italian ports where you are going more far afield. We are doing the Monte Carlo excursion that is not a full day, along with "Florence on your own" in La Spezia, Jumping back into Eternal Rome and Pompeii. Sorrento and Capri. In La Palma we are just going to head to the beach on our own.

Welcome aboard!

There is always someone to take your photo and yes, the Shutters folks will do it if you ask. When you line up for characters, for example, you just hand them your camera if you want all of you in the pic and either the photographer or the character "handler" will take it for you

We have no kids - I am 50 and dh is 60. Just big kids!

Oh, Mikki, thank goodness!!! Did I read (a page or two back) that you're doing the DCL Monaco excursion that includes the car museum? I believe we'll be doing that one as well, although I keep flip-flopping on whether to do it on our own or just take the DCL excursion. Maybe we'll join you and I'll leave the planning to those nice DCL people.

Thanks everyone for answering all of my dining questions. I'm not one of those people who goes on a cruise just to eat - I promise! It's just that this is our first vacation since DD and I had to go gluten-free and the last thing I want is to end up with one or both of us violently ill on the trip.

We've ordered a gluten-free meal for the plane, but who knows what that will be like. It could be just a fruit cup or something. I've printed gluten-free restaurant cards in Spanish and Italian so that hopefully we can order meals in Barcelona and Rome. It's just a little nerve-wracking when you have to prepare all your food at home and never eat out because of cross-contamination issues and then to leave home for 9 days and have to trust others to feed you. I trust Disney will do a great job on the ship, but elsewhere...?

Does anybody know if the port will have food for purchase since boarding is in the afternoon?

:welcome: Another newbie to our group AND another swimmer! Welcome aboard and welcome to the DISboards as I see you're new here too!! I'll add ya to the roll call on the first post!! So I take it you are on this side of the pond!? This is our first trip to Europe (well, I went WAAAY back in HS with my French class but that was 30 years ago and someone else took care of all the planning so it kinda doesn't count!:rotfl:) Since you have been several times do you have any tips or advice to offer for us Europe newbies?!

Welcome Diane!

You mean there are some DH's out there that actually help plan?! Really?! :rotfl: I have asked my DH to look over the DCL excursions a couple of times but he's not found anything that he's interested in so I guess I'm on my own.:sad2:

Are we the only couple cruising without kids??? Our kids are 23 and 21, both out of college and living on their own. They are not coming on the cruise with us. If you miss being around kids then Disney is the place to get your "fix"!!

We are getting ready to start packing for our trip - we are leaving Wednesday! :scared1:Looks like it is going to be hotter than Hades this time but it as the last time DD danced at disney too. I think the heat index that day was 125. Maybe we can beat that this time. :lmao:

FUN times ahead! :yay: Did you say you're going for a whole week or does it work out to be longer by the time you add the cruise on?! Ya'll must be EXPERT packers by now!! Do you have an Owners Locker? I absolutely LOVE ours - with as many trips as you take you should get one if you don't have one already!! They are FANTABULOUS!! :thumbsup2

We got room service almost every morning when we were in port on the Med last year. And then I'd run upstairs and supplement it with some additional items if someone was in the mood for something different than what we ordered. It was a really good time saver, for sure.

What kinds of things do they offer for breakfast?! Do they have hot stuff or is it only pastries & cereal? Do you order it the night before and request it come at a certain time??:confused3

Does anybody know if the port will have food for purchase since boarding is in the afternoon?

I don't have any idea about what's available in the port but I'd think you'd almost certainly get better food on the ship if you can just wait until like between 12-1:00 to eat your lunch. You are in Barcelona the night before, right or are you flying in that morning? If you're there the night before I would just plan on eating a big leisurely breakfast between like 8 & 9:00 that will last until after Noon.

We had our first "A" meet this morning. DS only got to swim free & back & 1 relay but he did awesome in all 3 swims. DS dropped time in everything which we were happy to see but we lost the meet by only 6 points.:sad2: It was VERY close!! If we only had some more 15-18 girls we'd have probably won. We only have 3 that age and one of those is one of our assistant coaches so she pulled double duty and we had to swim some of our 13-14's up. That's a huge negative for us. But at least it was a close score! :goodvibes (It helped that their euber fast swimmers were gone!):rotfl:

Is it bedtime yet? :rotfl2: I am sooo sleepy. I have a stiff neck for some reason & everytime I moved last night I woke up.:headache: I tried to self medicate before I went to bed but it made me have nightmares I think! :rotfl: I dreamed that there was a gang that went thru our neighborhood with garage door openers and they opened EVERY garage and STOLE every car from every house! :rotfl: Then I had to text our coach and tell her we couldn't come to the meet because we didn't have a car! :rotfl2: How goofy is THAT?! :rotfl: THEN we had storms roll thru around 4:00 am & it thundered & thundered & thundered for like an hour so I am just about to fall asleep right now! This is really scaring me for how jet lagged we're gonna be on our trip!!:scared:

We are flying in a full day before the cruise. We've contacted the Celiac Society in Barcelona and now have a list of "safe" restaurants at which to eat, so we won't be absolutely starving as we board. :rotfl:

I'm already thinking about our next possible vacation. I think we will want to take DS (2) to WDW next year when he's three and a half. He is staying home for this trip because of the amount of walking involved. So, it might be WDW for us next year. The new CARS movie should be a hit with him this summer.

Yes, I am doing that excursion without dh. If I am going on my own I am much happier to let DCL do the work for me!
