August 13, 2011 Med - Mickey's Marauding Mates

Yeah I've always spoken Castellano in Barcelona, my Catalan is patchy at best. Lots of people will speak English anyway, the amount of times I've spoken Spanish and been replied to in English before they realise (not to blow my own trumpet too much) that my Spanish is much better than their English.

Might actually get round to booking my Barcelona hotel come payday this Friday ;)

:goodvibes

:thumbsup2 I think it is time!! :goodvibes Have you finally decided on one?!

Nope, not yet :lmao:
Possibly either the Ohla Hotel or the Eurostars Grand Marina maybe?

:goodvibes

:lmao: If I had a euro for every hotel you've mentioned up until now I could buy ya a drink of the day! :rotfl2:

A friend of mine was round for coffee today and she has lent me her Navigators from that years Med cruise to look at. I know things will probably be different this year but they are still nice to browse through.:)

I am reading the 2011 passporter cruise guide - bought the online version as the print version wont be ready in time. Not all chapters available yet but will be in a few days. What is there already is great!

Oh neat!! I wonder how similar they are? Have you compared them to the ones someone posted from the transatlantic?

Any scoop worth sharing?! :goodvibes

OK now peeps...I found us back on PAGE 3 again!! Let's step it up!!! :chat:

We have a swim meet this evening...just hoping we don't get stormed out! Cross your fingers!!

...trying to get back to the top before Annie snaps her towel at us again... :cool1:

Still have not booked flights, and Luke and I appear to be jockeying for Last Minute Barcelona rooms. I"m sure it will gel at some point, just have been stupidly busy. I think we are flying Aer Lingus, so I can set toes on my Irish roots for an hour each way and say i've been there and done that. Oh, and its also the cheapest for me too. :rotfl:

Now that I've grappled Euros... where are you guys finding the best exchange rates? Second question - should I just get Amex checks to protect and transfer on the ship? I don't know what the rates are onboard, and apparently, neither does DCL. heheheee

We discovered Rick Steve's podcasts, free maps, and audio guides and have fallen hard for them. They are so much fun to explore. So far, our interests are:

Fri - Barcelona: Sagrada Familia, Palau de la Música Catalana (there is a festival going on while we are there, and the guitarist is amazing!) and dancing through the Gothic Quarter. I would LOVE to get there early on Thursday, however, and add in a futbal game

Sun - Villefranche (Monte Carlo/Nice/ Cannes), France: Looking for Must Do's here. I'm thinking it should be Monte Carlo? Open to suggestions.

Mon - La Spezia (Florence/Pisa), Italy: Can we fit in both the Leaning Tower and Cinque Terre? All I want to do in Pisa is take a leaning picture and say we've been there. My heart is in walking the villages of CT and meeting the residents. (any advice on how to convince two teens that this is fun would be appreciated as well.)

Tues - Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy: Sistine Chapel, St. Petes, then a four-hour Rick Steve's Rome blazing through the Trevi Fountain, knocking on some dead guys in some catacombs, and finding gelato before roaring in the colliseum. Yeah, i know it's aggressive; we plan on being off the boat in the predawn hours, swimming to shore.

Wed - Naples (Pompeii), Italy: Hopping the train to the ruins and just walking and enjoying.

Thu - At Sea: Sleeping

Fri - Palma, Mallorca (Spain): Not sure here, open to suggestions, but damn, if I don't get a set of Mallorca pearls here, I am disowning myself.

Sat - Barcelona, Spain: Collapsing on plane to go home and get kids ready for school. When? Monday. :rotfl: "So... what did you do this weekend?" "Jetted back from Europe... you?"

Looking for:

~ Advice on ports we don't have things planned at
~ The best port for Italian masks (my daughter and I have a mask collection)
~ Speaking of daughter, she's looking to see if there are a lot of other 14's on the ship, or Freshmen/Sophomores. She is so not into hanging with her brother on the ship (he's in college)
~ what am I missing? Tipping maybe?

What's everybody planning to do in Barcelona?

I really would like to see La Sagrada Familia. We found a restaurant called Conesa that serves gluten-free hot and cold sandwiches () and has great reviews. It is in the Gothic Quarter and near La Sagrada Familia, so we're going to check that out for sure. Our hotel is just off Las Ramblas so we will probably go for a walk and try to see the Columbus monument too. I'm not sure how jet-lagged we're going to be, so I don't want to plan too much.

...trying to get back to the top before Annie snaps her towel at us again... :cool1:

:rotfl2: Am I that bad?! :rotfl: I have spent a LONG time out here talking to myself sometimes!! (First one booked on the boat I think!) :lmao:

I don't know where you live but I will probably use either Capital One (our regular bank) OR PNC which I've heard is good for this too and I have a small acct. there that I haven't used in ages but at least it's an account. Both have less in fees than say Wells Fargo (Wachovia).

Maybe nothing on our first afternoon pre-cruise. Rooftop pool at our hotel is sounding good right now... After the cruise probably the HOHO bus & Montserrat.

Sun - Villefranche (Monte Carlo/Nice/ Cannes), France: Looking for Must Do's here. I'm thinking it should be Monte Carlo? Open to suggestions.

We are either going to Nice or Monte Carlo / Eze via train or bus (probably Monte Carlo) then I want to come back & spend the afternoon on the beach at Villefranche.

I have been kicking this idea around (Pisa FIRST thing in the AM then high tailing it to Monterosso) but am worried about the holiday that day messing up the train schedules. Hear Pisa is a one trick pony town so not sure it's worth the extra stress. Everybody has seemed to absolutely LOVE Cinque Terre so I think we're planning on doing that on our own via a combo of train & ferry boat if it's running. Rick Steve's has a small pocket guide Called Snapshot of Cinque Terre that is very helpful as it's devoted just to that region.:thumbsup2

Tues - Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy: Sistine Chapel, St. Petes, then a four-hour Rick Steve's Rome blazing through the Trevi Fountain, knocking on some dead guys in some catacombs, and finding gelato before roaring in the colliseum. This is why we hired romeinlimo for this port...lots of ground to cover....

Wed - Naples (Pompeii), Italy: Hopping the train to the ruins and just walking and enjoying.

Pompeii, Positano & Sorrento with Mikki & Andrew via romeinlimo :thumbsup2

Thu - At Sea: Sleeping

Palo brunch & pool :goodvibes

Fri - Palma, Mallorca (Spain): Not sure here, open to suggestions, but damn, if I don't get a set of Mallorca pearls here, I am disowning myself.

I think lots of us are just planning to take a taxi to a beach for a fraction of the DCL bus to the beach.

Sat - Barcelona, Spain: Collapsing on plane to go home and get kids ready for school. When? Monday. :rotfl: "So... what did you do this weekend?" "Jetted back from Europe... you?"

HEY!! We also collect masks!! I hang them in our foyer!! :thumbsup2 I have not researched them yet tho...Let me know if you find out anything about this idea!!!!! (pretty please!) (Oh, and our DS is 14.)

Yeah, i saw that, and made me tremble in fear. DD "fell in love" on her last cruise (as much as you can with all those counselors around) and is reading every Teen Girl Goes To Europe and Falls in Love romance novel she can find in the store. I keep nudging her required reading list at her, but it keeps making its way to the circular file.

I have found a wonderful little shop to even learn about making masks, in Florence, however, it's $500 EU and a week long. It appears they have a shop as well but i can't find it:

http://www.catpress.org/article279.html

From what I am able to learn, Agostino Dessì appears to be a major mask artist, as is his daughter. http://www.alicemasks.com/ She is located in Firenze. I would not be surprised to find their masks dans La Spezia?

Interesting. I wonder how expensive the masks are? I saw an email address. Do you want me to try to contact them & see if there's a shop somewhere near La Spezia?! Do you know where Fierenze is? My MIL went to Vienna several years ago & she brought us back a papier-mache mask that kind of reminds me of a jester but it's not painted to look like a jester. It's just got that look somehow.

:lmao: OK, NOW, let me reassure you that my DS is not a suave, captivating hunk of any sort!! I love him 'cuz he's my one & only but trust me on this one!! He's my little 5'5" 93 Lb. computer geek who spends day & night playing the SIMS whenever he's not at swim practice or at school. I took him to Borders the other day to get his summer reading books and I couldn't even get him to LOOK in the "Young Adults" section because he's convinced that every book in that area is about Vampires & that they have been written solely for girls.:sad2: He picked The Waxman Report for his AP State & Local Govt read and he picked some adult mystery novel that he read 15 pages in & decided he doesn't like.:headache: (I'm going to take it back.) I gave him a few of my old paperbacks to look thru to see if I had a John Grisham book or something that he would like. He ended up picking Dan Brown's Angels & Demons (which I threw in the pile simply because we're going to Rome). So he goes & picks Angels & Demons and now I have to push him to read at least 30 pages a day so he can get it done & write his book review AND still have time to read this Waxman Report book and do the workbook packet that goes with that. :sad2: OH, and then there's the HS Algebra II packet that we have to argue about working on every day too. School's only been out a week here & it's already a battle to get him to do the work. :sad2:

*never* let him mention The Sims. Removing her ability to play is an easy way to get her to do anything short of shaving her head clean. Given my background, and her college brother's deep involvement with anything computer gaming and the child is pretty savvy. She's flighty as hell right now, so guys in her grade don't expect anything more than "Sheesh, you don't know how to do THAT??!!", does it, and flips along her merry way. She's determined to take and catalogue 1,000 photos per day. They had darn better well be good or I'm selling her when we return home. She's got to earn her way on this trip.

Sure, that would be great to contact them. Firenze is nearer to the port of Livorno, but still can be reached. I would much rather purchase in port though - I am clumsy as all get out.

By the way, DD says the YA section HAS been taken over by Vampires, but the Werewolves are giving them a run for their money.

I guess Jeff is packing & getting ready for his WDW trip and Dream cruise! Good luck to DD's dance team! Can't wait to hear your comparisons of the Dream to our Magic!!:goodvibes :wave2: Bon Voyage!

We are here! We're here! And it is hotter than Hades. DD is at dance rehearsal right now. Main street parade is tomorrow afternoon and then the downtown disney waterside stage performance tomorrow evening. They had a dance workshop this morning and a dance gala dinner on Saturday night. THEN we get to head to PC to board the Dream. Can't wait. Can't wait. Can't wait.

Have a great great weekend all my DIS cruising friends. I'll report in on the Dream after the sailing!

OK, I emailed them to see if their masks were sold anyplace else and this was their reply.:sad2:

Ciao Lee
è possibile comprare le maschere solamente nel mio negozio a FIRENZE,
Un saluto Agostino

which translates to:

Hi Lee
You can buy the masks only in my shop in Florence,
A greeting Agostino

Heheheee he's thinking we want to buy JUST his masks, which I would, but he's like the Picasso of Italian masks to me (alive and still creating - wait, Picasso is dead. I am not jinxing him...) I'm sure we'll find something. I'll be sure to jump up and down and let you know if I find them (after handing my treasure off to my eyeball-rolling kids for safe keeping)

I did find this place, in Florence: http://www.papertrain.it/prod_si.htm They look like they have a ton of fun, creative options, like the butt clock.

I just discovered Agostino's daughter has a shop in Florence as well. Will research further.

Hi peeps! Now that summer swim season is in full swing I know just how busy & how fast the rest of June & July will go!! EEK! I have so much planning left to do!! (Primarily, I need to figure out our Paris itinerary beyond DLP!)

We are going away this weekend to my parents in West Virginia...there is a family reunion on Saturday (which I hear may be low attendance as some are going to a wedding in Ohio for another branch of the family). But so oh well. We do not go to see them very often so it's a good time to visit with my parents. DH and my Dad are going golfing on Sun. morning before we head back. Gives them a few hours to bond I suppose. At any rate, I am depending on the rest of ya'll to keep the thread going and to not let it fall back to page 6 or something like that!! :rotfl: I may or may not get a chance to pop in from my parents house. I think they finally got high speed internet last year but they used to be on dial-up and THAT was excrutiating!:sad2: We shall see.:confused3

Anyway, CIAO baby!!!! Have a good weekend all!!!!

Well finally booked a Barcelona hotel.
Just got the night before the cruise so far, staying at the Eurostars Grand Marina, got a rate of £160 ($255) for the night which includes breakfast, through Asda (walmart) Travel.
Oddly enough the same room (bed and breakfast) costs £255 ($407) through expedia!!

Just the post cruise night now, maybe somewhere nearer the Ramblas...

:goodvibes
