Yes... I am serious! It's the one thing I vividly remember from my college sociology class... I about died too! But if you think about it - it makes sense... If the meal can't be saved - that's thousands of $$ down the drain, and $$ is sometimes more important than other things... :scared

Your school district would probably lose a lot more money if the school bus was involved in fatal accident on an icy road. With schools open, because the lunch lady can't save the beef stew.

Your school district/lunch lady should make sure that lunch can be saved this time of year. Even if it means peanut butter sandwiches and chicken nuggets every day throughout winter. There's too much of a liability issue to have school busses running in bad weather.

I'm a twelve month employee for the school board, and when they cancel school (hurricane) we used to be required to report to work - yes, not safe for buses, students or teachers but we had to report Thankfully they changed that policy a few years ago and now only the principal and assistant principal are required to report to work. When one is cancelled the whole county is cancelled. Thankfully it doesn't happen very often!

Hi Kathy... I am sorry to hear that you were so sick - you must have been fighting it for a while! I am glad that you are doing better.

Wow - stranded in Iowa??? Yikes! We had a 1' layer of ice in town yesterday morning... I had to call the plow company and ask them to come salt/sand - which, according to our contract is only done on a request basis because it's so expensive.

Finished my bag set yesterday - whoot! I hope to take a couple of photos to post this morning.

I can't decide which baby project to start on first? I am thinking that I will start on the chenielle quilt. All of my fabric is here and washed. I still have not decided if I am going to make that other blanket? I have fabric for it - but I am just not hit in the head over it. I keep seeing all this other adorable baby boy fabric - thankfully I've been able to curb my urge to buy it. I have an idea for one more quilt that I think will be soooo adorable - but I want to see how this one turns out first before I order the fabric for that one. I have spent soooo much on this little guy already, and he isn't even here yet.

Nothing else new or exciting at all.

Yes; they drove from Dubuque to Cedar Rapids on Friday night for the kids high school tournament on Saturday; then they drove Saturday night to Cedar Falls for the little kids tournament on Sunday. As they drove to the tournament on Sunday, it took them over an hour to go four miles because of the ice. As the day went on, it got worse and the road they take home was basically shut down because it was so bad (they don't salt in Iowa, they use sand which does not work on ice).

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new Mickey bag...you just get better and better.

Ok did a quick catch up here. Haven't had the time to do much DIS reading from my trip. Congrats on the new baby and love the new bags. Still not a bag person but am considering doing some creative sewing myself this week, though nothing nearly as complex as what you've been doing!

I can't believe the school district leaves decisions like that to the lunch lady!

I used to drive a school bus for our district (there are 17 districts in our county - each is independent of the others - similar to yours). At least in our case the Superintendent consulted with the manager of the bus company to determine if it was safe to send out the buses. They do tend to start with a 2 hour delay in most cases and then decide later if its necessary to close the schools. We also have "snow" days built into the school calendar, though one of those days this year was because of the hurricane in late October.

Love the sorcerer Mickey bag! I haven't felt much like sewing lately - in a funk I guess. I've had some sinus related health issues going on since Thanksgiving and I'm wiped out by the time the weekend gets here. Not being very productive at work either, luckily we aren't too busy right now.

My SIL's sewing machine lives in my attic...I'm not even sure if it's ever been used, and I can barely handle sewing a button, but you have inspired me to think about learning to sew! Thanks so much for letting us know! I missed a phone call from Ruthie yesterday morning - I didn't realize it until last night as I was going to bed. I am just so sad for her.

I agree with this completely. However, when my sociology professor told us this - it was 16+ years ago, and things were a lot different then. I am sure that things have changed somewhat, but I do still think it's insane. And even if they have changed the rules now (which I am not sure about) - it scares me to think it was ever done like that. And if I think that' it's unsafe for my girls to be traveling to school (especially when the other schools around ours are cancelled), I keep them home - plain and simple.

I totally agree - like I said above, this was told to me by my sociology professor 16+ years ago... Liabilities and such have changed so drastically in the last few years, due to the internet mostly - I can't imagine that things are done the way they once were. However, I do still think that the person in charge of lunch does have a say in it, it does make a lot of sense from a stupid point of view.

That's interesting too Stephanie, and makes no sense.

We would never survive here if we cancelled by county - we would never have have school in session. There are times where it's (quite literally) sun shiney and gorgeous in town where the girls go to school, yet we can have blizzard conditions where we live (about 15 miles away).

That is some of the most expenive fabric I have ever purchased. But I do love it - it's such a nice weight. I don't have any of the purple, but it is on my list for someday - I have a project in mind for it.

Thanks Lois... Yes - I had only been sewing for about 6 & 8 months respectively, at that time. I loved those outfits. But seriously - that's what Disboutiquers do you to... They encourage you to try, give the best advice and give you such confidence because they always give the best compliments too.... I never would have learned how to sew - or sew so well if it wasn't for them.

Thanks! Well, just keep in mind - it was the "thought" that pushed me over the edge... before you know it - that machine will be calling to you and begging you to get up there and rescue it. All it takes is the desire to learn something new (especially when you are older, and you have the patience to do so) - the rest will just fall into place. I encourage you to learn - it's lots of fun!

First I want to do a RuthIE update and ask for prayers on her behalf. I was able to text her for a while after work yesterday, I do not want to go into all of the details, because I don't want to say anything I am not supposed to. But I will pass on her prayer request, and ask any and all of you to keep her in your prayers... She is such a WONDERFUL person - with a huge heart, and she could really use them right now.

RuthIE has asked for prayers to help her keep her strength to care for her animals - I know she has a horse and her dogs to care for. But with the pain she is in - these chores are very difficult for her to do. She also asked for prayers that the bank approves an emergency loan for her. And finally, prayers for some pain relief. Her right shoulder is broken and her left wrist is sprained - among other things.

So, I ask that you keep RuthIE in your prayers. I will keep all of you updated as much as I can. And RuthIE - if you happen to read this... Please know that you are in my prayers, and my family's prayers - My girls were very worried about you when I told them what happened. So, please know we are all thinking of you and praying for you.

I had to work at Target yesterday, which always makes my days a little crazier.

I've had a burning desire to begin work on the baby quilt - so yesterday morning, I hauled all of my cutting tools down to the diningroom table, so that I could lay out the quilt - since it won't fit in my sewing room. I was able to get it all laid out, and I even managed sewing a few lines before I had to get ready for work.

This really makes me ANGRY!...
As I was leaving work yesterday, Alli called me and asked me to come immediately to pick her up from school... As I was hanging up - she told me that someone had stolen her Uggs. Seriously??? Seriously??? C'mon... She had just received these as a Christmas gift from her grandparents. We really can't afford things like this for our girls - nor would I ever consider spending that much $$ on a pair of boots for them.

Long story... When I pulled up in the school parking lot - I called Alli... So, there she was, crying in the locker room, and basically stuck there because she had nothing to put on her feet! What happened was that after school, her and 2 of her other friends wanted to do a quick run around the indoor track, so they put all of their stuff in the locker room - they were gone for less than 10 minutes... During that time, someone had taken her boots and leg warmers (and her winter coat, but we didn't find that out until later). So, Momma Bear came out... I called the school from the parking lot (because I had no idea where the locker room was), and I explained what happened... The person I talked to went down to the locker room to get Alli. When she got down there - Alli told her that she thinks she can see her boots and legwarmers. So, the lady took pictures of the locker in question, then broke into it... Sure enough, Alli's boots and leg warmers were in there - and we know they were hers because of the fur MM ate out of them a few weeks ago. So, Alli got her expensive boots back. She was wearing them when she walked out of the school, I was relieved. So, she gets in the car - in tears, and I ask her where her coat is (it was very cold out afterall), and then she realizes that her coat was stolen as well. Her coat was a gift from her grandparents for Christmas last year - a down Northface. Grrr... I tried to call the school again, but by that time, no one answered. I am going to call right away this morning... They do have security cameras, and the lady who took pictures of that locker yesterday... Her coat wasn't in that particular locker - but I do think that who ever took her coat was the same person. So, as of waking up this morning - it is -7° and we are in a windchill warning - and SHE HAS NO WINTER COAT! I am so angry! My girls have very few nice things, and most of the nice things they do have don't come from us (because we can't spend that much $$ on things like that) - so it really ANGERS me when other kids feel that they have the right to take things from others. So, now ALli has to suffer... We will find a coat for her to wear today and hopefully she will get her coat back. I am just so mad about the whole situation - and Alli is so hurt, because yet again, she cannot trust her peers.

Sorry for my rant... I feel badly even complaining, in light of RuthIE's situation, but I really had to vent.

Today, first of all, I will be calling the school.

Then I plan to work on the baby quilt all day. I have no idea how far I will get on it, but I am hoping to get it quilted today (I was able to go upstairs again last night and get a few more lines done on it) - and maybe make the binding.
