Last question before our cruise this Friday! One in our party (my 6'8 little brother) is having foot surgery this summer and is really only comfortable in gym shoes. He was thinking of wearing a nice pair of shorts and a TB shirt--with gym shoes. He realizes it's not really the greatest look, but would like to be comfortable. Any thoughts? How out of place will he look? Thank you!

(p.s This isn't even my 1st cruise; it's our fourth! Sigh.)

That's totally fine. My teenage son wears the same type of things with his white vans every night.

Aren't the MDR's cruise casual? The shoes wouldn't be the issues...the shorts might be. It's usual at the very least Jeans in the MDRs.

Have a great trip.

If he feels too casual, he could wear khaki slacks instead of shorts. The shoes would not be so noticeable with slacks and the rest of him would look 'dressier.' I think a lot of men and boys bring only 1-2 pair of slacks and change into them only for dinner and change again after.

Good luck to him with healing the foot. I have had foot issues myself and am almost always in 'not cute' shoes. My DH is so sick of my Sketchers Go Walks..

I think they should at the very least enforce a collared shirt, dress shorts (khaki and the like) for men/boys. While I don't love having to go change, going to the show and the dining rooms seems like it should require a dress code beyond 'no bathing suits'. If you don't want to get dressed up eat in Cabanas. We got booted on an Alaskan cruise on another line for wearing Jeans.

Our only regret for this short vacation is that, due to a flight change, we've had to cancel our Thursday night Victoria and Albert dinner...probably the first year since 1992 that we're not enjoying one of our favorite places. But we've never taken "little"brother!

My DH wears khaki shorts at almost every meal in the MDR and he is overdressed compared to some in there.

As I noted earlier, I did not know that Disney had 'relaxed' their dress code as we were always under the impression khakis or slacks were required under the "cruise casual" dress code. Personally, I think if shorts are acceptable, khakis are great and sadly, the fact that he is considered 'over dressed' is disappointing. While I don't want to have to be in a tux for every meal, it'd be nice if people took the time to dress for dinner. Cabanas is an option for those that feel getting "dressed up"(if Khaki shorts and a collared shirt are too much trouble) is a hassle, but I'd like to see the MDR's ask for a little more from guests regarding dinner attire.

The last one that we went on they had severely relaxed the dress code...saw multiple guys in tank tops and even a girl in a bathing suit with just a cover up over it. My DH had his khakis and collared shirts...I agree that it would be nice for people to take the time to dress properly for dinner! :D

I think this is interesting:

it notes shorts and t-shirts are okay, no tanks, swimwear as always. But the phrasing for formal / semi formal on a 7 night is different than on the 3 and 4 nights.

That's because the "formal" night on the 3 & 4 night cruises is actually a "Dress Up Optional" night. On a 7 night cruise it's actually called a "formal" or "semi-formal" night.
