I went to the cash machine about an hour ago to withdraw $300 for an item I was going to purchase off craigslist. Well the $$ sounded like it was coming out but it never did. I tried taking $5 out of my checking & it worked fine. I tried again from my savings & it said "daily limit reached". Has this ever happened to anyone?? If so how did it turn out?

I immediately emailed my credit union -- they do not have an emergency number, only for lost or stolen CC's.

Thanks :)

Jenny

there isn't a number on the machine? You should probably call the same number as lost or stolen cards then.. not an email..
and i hope you acted appropriately unhappy when it happened for when they review the tape!!

(I had this happen once at a mall food court ATM, i withdrew $40 but it only gave me $20) i called the number but they basically said tough luck.

I used to work at a credit union. When this happens they will audit the machine to see if the money actually came out. If the machine is off then they will refund your account. This happened several times over the year I worked there. There was one time when a customer said it happened but the ATM didn't have extra money and I'm not sure what happened that time.

It's one reason to always use your banks ATM. Other ATM operators will tell you that you are out of luck.

I hope your bank can figure it out and you get your money. I always hold my breath waiting to see the money come out. I don't know why as it has never happened to me but I am always nervous it will.

happened to my husband once, he was using an ATM at a restaurant. He called the bank, filed the paperwork and they credited our checking within a week or so.

This has happened to me. Call your bank immediately. Like PP stated they will audit machine and video as well. I was credited back the money seeing as I never received it. It took 4 days to do but I had my money back. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses! I did contact my bank & I drove back up to the ATM to see if there was a contact number on the actual machine, I couldn't find one so I sent them an email. It's 2 blocks from my house so I will stop on my way to work tomorrow.

Hopefully this will have a happy ending--fingers crossed....

I've worked at three different financial institutions (2 banks, 1 credit union) and 99% of the time when people say they didn't get their money the machine was out of balance. It isn't uncommon and hopefully you'll have your money in no time! :goodvibes

I was responsible for the ATM at one of the branches I worked at (I was a head teller) and one of our customers said she didn't get $100 when she put in her card. I balanced the machine and it wasn't out of balance. I looked up her history and she was a great customer, been with us for years, no problems or overdrafts, etc. so I gave her the $100 and we ended up eating the $100.

As everyone else has mentioned they will audit the ATM and see if there is a shortage. If the shortage is the exact amount you claim you didn't get, then they will give you the money immediately. If the machine is not short, then they will pull the security tapes to view your transaction and the person that followed you. You would be surprised what you can learn from a person expressions and mannors. I can remember once a lady claiming she didn't get her $100. The tape clearly showed her fumbling around confused. The next person looked a little excited and happy when they reached for the money. We suspect that her $100 got hung up some how and the other person got the money. This wasn't something we could prove but we did credit $100 to the first lady because we believed the machine had malfunctioned.

As savings accounts go, they are regulated by federal law for a certain (small) number of withdrawals, per month.

Check with your CU for more details.

If that's not the case, it could be an ATM problem - the downside to credit unions is that the majority of them do not own their cards/machines, but rather contract them out to third-party operators...

Also keep in mind that some banks do not access their machines so it may take longer. The bank I worked for had an armored car service that filled and balanced the machine. The branch had no combo for the machine. They would do a dispute and you were credited the money back. Then when the service checks the machine next time they will find it. Good luck!:)

I had it happen 2 times once the machine was out of money and it was not actually pulled from my account and the second time money was jammed so I had to file a claim with my CU to get the money back. It took a week but I got it back. I kept my receipt to prove it pulled from my account. I always ask for a receipt now.

Had this happen - pulled out $40 but only got $20. Contacted the branch the next morning, and the money was credited back to the account within a few days. I was glad it was only $20 though!! It really makes me leary of withdrawing large amounts at once. Good luck, OP, and let us know how it turns out.

This happened to me on vacation in Florida. My bank put it back in my account right away and then they went through the steps of finding out what happened. I got a letter of apology. All turned out well.

The same thing happened to me and I just called the bank and they checked the tapes and credited my money back in just a few hours.

This happened to us also. We got the money back a little over a week but that also included a holiday. Good luck in getting it back.

Not quite the same, but along the same lines.

Years and years ago, I withdrew $10 (back when you had a choice between 10's and 20's). I got a receipt and the receipt said $10 was withdrawn. When I checked my account balance a few days later, it was WAY off. Turns out they debited my account by $100, not $10! Thank goodness, I had the receipt. I took it to my bank, and they gave me back the $90 I was out immediately. I asked, and had I not had the receipt, they would have had to ask the owner of the ATM for an audit, and if the machine wasn't over, I'd be out of luck.

Even since then, I will ALWAYS get a receipt for an ATM transaction. You just never know when it will save your bacon!

This happened to me too. One of the $20s that came out was actually a $10. They tried to tell me I was lying. Not in so many words, but.....

never got that $10.

My checking account imposes a daily limit per check card at the atm. I guess it's semi damage control in the event your card is lost or stolen and the person figures out the pin.

OP, I hope they can help you get the money back.

I had this happen to me about 26 years ago . . . my where did the years go. :confused3 It was only $20, but back then that was like a $1,000. and it was Memorial Day weekend. The following Tuesday I called the bank [it wasn't like today where they are always accessible] and they told me the ATM machine would be long, out of balance, if I was correct. Sure enough it was . . . and I got my money back instantly. Scary thing for a 20 year old, though.
