Atlanta, have you made your milk & bread run?

The snow does not scare me it is the inevitable power outage we will have for days. That and the trees and branches falling, you can start to hear the crack and boom. We are lucky in Atlanta to have so many beautiful trees. Problem is with all the development we have seen in the last 20 years the extensive root systems have been disturbed, the tree might appear healthy but a good ice storm and boom. There goes your garage or worse.

See, this is what worries me. Four to six inches of snow? Who cares, I'm not going out in it anyway. However, we're predicted to get 1/2" to 1" of ICE on top of it. That means all these tall, brittle pine trees are going to be covered in that heavy ice. They'll be dropping limbs like gangbusters. Last time we had a big ice storm, a big one hit the corner of the house right at Christian & Eleni's room. The concussion was so hard it threw her right out of bed! Thankfully, it only hit the corner. I would hate to think what *might* have happened.:sad2:

I just hope people will stay off the roads. Here in the South, we simply don't have snow-clearing equipment and everything is either up or downhill. It really doesn't matter how much snow we get, but it's always accompanied by ice. Even a little ice turns our interstates into a death zone. In December we had a little ice one evening. There were over 300 wrecks in my county alone in the first 2 hours of the ice event! There are 15 counties which make up metro Atlanta, so there were a heckuva lot of wrecks. We haven't had a really bad snow/ice storm since 1993, almost 18 years ago. That time, I had 14" at my house and it thundered and lightninged all day. We were out of school for about a week, and North Georgia was out for 3 weeks! Just because of the ice.:sad2:

We did our usual grocery run today. The shelves were a bit emptier than usual but not wiped out by any means yet.

The scary thing is we went to a couple of places asking for ice melt and couldn't find anywhere that even stocked it around here. Hope we don't need it!

What sucks about this is my husband has to take personal (vacation) days when he can't make it in to work because of snow or ice. Even though he has the ability to dial in and work from home, he actually has to be at the office "clocked in" for it to count.

That doesn't quite seem fair; he'd rather use a vacation to, well, actually GO on vacation rather than sit at home!

Yea, we are on our last 1/4 bag of ice melt... and expecting a good bit of snow Monday/Tuesday. I'm going to try to get to the store tomorrow morning (before the church crowds get out) because I need to do my weekly grocery shopping. Normally I do that on Monday, but I am not going to risk it.

I did go out and shovel the driveway earlier and I am glad I did. There was already a layer of ice forming under the snow. I shoveled and salted so hopefully it won't be too bad in the morning (my driveway is a pretty steep incline and at times I can't get up it).

I'm quite a bit north of you and walmart had it. They were almost out though. I didn't buy any.

The milk and eggs was looking sorry but there was plenty of bread. The temp dropped a lot today brrrr. I was just out and now I'm drinking hot chocolate.

I'm a little worried about the ice. Even if they close post dh has to go in :(

Are you guys in ATL? I have a friend in JAG up there.

They keep moving the forecasted ICE area further South so it completely covers our area now. Luckily DH won't have to go in if it is too icy for him to get to post safely (we live 35 minutes away). We checked Target, the PX and the Commissary earlier with no luck for ice melt. We'll hit Walmart out here tomorrow and see if there is any left.

Yuck that your DH will have to go in. Do you guys live on post? We had that problem at West Point - that post NEVER closes no matter how much snow/ice there is! Living off post was dangerous in the winter time.

Hope that Atlanta has some winter weather equipment coming to deal with the roads because it sounds like they are going to be a mess.

Stay safe!

Here in the Nashville area we are supposed to be on the edge of 2 different storms. We are only supposed to get 2 to 3 inches. Guess we are getting really lucky but I still don't want to drive in it. TDOT usualy does a good job of getting the main roads but the back roads and neighborhoods are a nighmare. And of corse we live on a back road. Go us. I am counting my blessings though. Everyone south of us please be careful and take care:goodvibes

Yes, hubby is stationed at Ft. Mac, we live a bit south, about 30 miles away. I'm not thrilled at the thought in the ice so praying it's more snow. He is mission essential and has to go in and put salt and ice melt out. Why if everything is closed is beyond me but 'tis life. Last year post had a late start time due to ice and he had to go in at the usual start time.

You stay safe too. It looks like we are going to get snow/wintry mix but more ice down your way.

I broke down and went bought a space heater get through until we can get the heat fix.:confused3:confused3:confused3

Praying it miss us in the valleys in Chattanooga. The mountains that protect us now is be hit hard now.

I'm in SC. Walmart used to carry ice melt, up till last year. They stopped stocking it last year. Bi-Lo, the only grocery store in town, doesn't stock it either. Lowes, our only other store, does stock it, but they ran out after the Christmas day storm. I had to drive 45 min. into NC to get some at Home Depot. Hopefully you'll have an easier time finding some.

If worse comes to worse regular table salt will work..but not as well as the ice melt stuff does. I have been seen going out the back door with my regular salt when we run out of ice melt. Neighbors probably think I'm nuts but it is OK in a pinch. And to clarify in case someone thinks I'm out there with my little salt shaker..I take the big canister not the little shaker.

Oh crud I live in SC Our regular grocery day is Sunday.I hate grocery shopping at the best of times much less right before a snow:scared1: but I have to have dog food:sick:

Brrrr. . .down to 21 at my house already! We're supposed to get down to about 15 tonight with a high of only about 36 tomorrow. . .in Georgia! Whatever falls tomorrow night/Monday is definitely going to stick. It's not supposed to be up to 40 where I live until next Friday!:scared1:
Love me some snow, though!!:thumbsup2

I did my normal grocery run this evening instead of tomorrow at my husbands suggestion.

I normally only go once a week on Sunday afternoons. So I took my list and discovered I could only fill about 1/2 of it. Produce was totally gone - even fresh vegs. They did have apples left.

1/2 gal. milks were all gone. Store was in process of restocking the gallon sizes.

Bread - none on shelves. Eggs - all gone. Meat - extremely picked over.

I was amazed. I had to go across the street to the convenience store to get a loaf of bread since we are nearly out at home.
I was sure wishing I'd kept an eye on the forecast because then I'd have gone on Friday instead.

I went to Walmart on Friday to pick up a prescription for DH and some staple items and milk, but ours is not a superstore so no produce. We went to a local family owned produce shop today to pick up what we needed so we wouldn't have to go to the grocery store. The Ingles parking lot was PACKED!!

WOW Our Wal-mart had plenty of bread, milk and eggs. But they have more check outs available today.

I have went early in the week to the grocery store. I knew it would be busy because it first month the grocery store stay busy at this time.

If you can't get ice melt, kitty litter or bags of sand work well too. They don't melt the ice but they do give you traction if needed. You can usually buy bags of sand at Home Depot type places (at least around here). They usually sell bags of sandbox sand too (we can buy it in tubes to put in the back of a car for extra traction).

My Dad has told me stories about the time he lived on Lookout and a huge ice storm hit. BRRRRRR, would not want to be up there this weekend.
