Atkins not working for me

This is definitately not working. :(
I've lost a total of 8.5 lbs since I started 3 weeks(maybe 4?) ago. This last week I gained back 5.5 of them. I'm not doing anything different, and I'm not cheating. If anything I was very proud of myself for actually sticking to this WOE. I've also been moving more.

I feel like I've been depriving myself of carbs and a limited way of eating for nothing! I don't understand it! This is really depressing. It costs much more per week for groceries to eat this way and I don't see any benefits.

Maybe I will try the South Beach since I'm already used to no sugar and limited carbs. Has anyone had success with one but not the other? I don't know what to do.

A few things.

1) It may have to do with TOM. Some women get very bloated and retain water during that time.

2) If you are excercising more than normal, you may have been gaining muscle which weighs more than fat. Did you take your measurements when you started? A lot of people lose inches when they don't lose weight.

3) Finally, it could be that you would do better on a different program. If I were you though, I would give it a few more weeks and see what happens.

Good luck with whatever you decide. :)

I agree with Lisa, a couple of other things that might be causing you trouble:

Are you using the LoCarb products (bars, shakes, candy)? Those can really sabotage your plan (some people get a way with them, others can't).

Are you feeling better on Atkins? Better energy levels, less cravings, etc.? If so, it may be working for you and you just need to tweak some things to get the weightloss flowing. I suggest checking out our KISS LowCarb challenge at http://disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=443946
It seems getting back to basics can have a huge impact on weightloss.

But it you are not happy on Atkins, then maybe SBD would be a better choice.

Believe me, I know the frustration of not seeing the miraculous results that other's seem to have.

Keep us posted on your progress and don't be afraid to vent :)

Don't forget to read the section in atkins book about jump starting for those who are not seeing the the results most see.

Also, don't live/die by the scale, not matter what plan you decide to go with.

Good luck!

I was on Atkins for about 3 weeks and I lost a little, but it was not noticable. For ME, when I switched to South Beach, I really noticed an immediate difference. I am almost ready for my 15lb. clippie. :)

I DO think having been on Atkins before I started South Beach helped, but it just didn't seem to work well for me. What made sense for ME was looking at carbs as well as fats. I pretty much ignored fats when I was on Atkins. Read the book and see what you think. A lot of what he said made sense for me, but everybody has to be on a plan that's comfortable and works for them. I am pleased with South Beach, but not everyone will be.

Just keep on trying. It's worth it!!

I have heard stories, very few though, about Atkins not working for everyone. Don't get discouraged though. Give yourself two more weeks and see what happens. It was very slow for me the first couple of weeks, but 20 pounds later, I'm still on it! Just 30 more pounds to go and I'll be at goal, but I will still continue to eat as I have been. I'll have the breads and maybe a potato every now and then, but I don't want to gain all the weight back. I hear those who go off of Atkins and back to the way they were eating gain it all back twice as fast. Not this gal!! ;) :)
If after another week or so and you see yourself gaining on not losing then try another diet. You'll find the right one.

Best to you,
Denise

My DW has had NO luck whatsoever with Atkins..she's tried it a few times. She's VERY strict when she tries it.
Don't let yourself be bogged down if a particular diet doesn't work for you.. try something new!
I've switched to South Beach recently and it's been great

Thanks so much for all the support :D This is such a wonderful group of generous, caring disers. :grouphug:

I'm going to stick it out with Atkins for a while longer and see what happens. If it doesn't work, then I will switch over to South Beach. I have both books and the WOE is similar yet different. It kills me to eat full fat when I've been conditioned to eat low fat. Yet I'm afraid if I eat low fat with Atkins, it won't work correctly. Make sense?

I'm also going to start eating SF whole milk yogurt. I don't understand why yogurt is supposed to help you lose weight :scratchin: , but I'm going to eat it anyway mostly because I miss it and if it helps with weightloss then that's an added bonus.

Thanks again for being so supportive with my whining.

Atkins isn't really working for me either. I've been on it for over a month now, and the scale has me losing and gaining the same 5 lbs. over and over. I'm not cheating, (with the exception of this past weekend in Orlando, but before that I was cheat free for about 4 weeks or so) so I really am getting discouraged as well. I have bought The Firm workout and all the stuff that goes with it. I have done it a couple of times, but then went on vacation and just got back Mon. so haven't done it since we got back yet. Hopefully, the excercise will kick start some weight loss. I'm going to stick with it too. Maybe we'll start losing together!

What's your blood type?? There's another thread on WISH about eating for your metabolic type. It seems that people with type O do best on an Atkins type diet. If you are type A, B or AB, then you may need a different plan.

Here's a link to the thread.

I'm type O and Atkins works for me but I know others who have had less success on it.

If you decide to stick with Atkins, try entering your food into Fitday.com to see the percentages of fats, carbs and proteins. You should be eating 60-70% fat on Atkins. I know this is hard for people who have been told over and over that eating fat is bad, but Atkins does not work if you're not getting enough fat. Carbs should be no more than 10% of your calories for the day.

Good luck & keep us posted!!

I am in the same boat as Kirstin's Mommy...I have been losing and gaining the same 5 lbs for a month now. I am giving Atkins 1 more week and then I may change to SBD. I have type B blood so maybe I need to try something else. I have started walking every evening so hopefully this will help. It is just so frustrating to see no progress!!

I am in the same boat. I am starting my third week and the first I lost 10 lbs and was thrilled. Thinking I love this WOE and all that. Then last week nothing. so 10 lbs in two weeks is still good, but I want some ongoing weight loss to sustain me. And I am struggling with the whole plan. I had been using a couple of the Atkins products, but stopped them hoping it would make a difference. Hasn't yet. If I lose nothing this week, I am going to try something else too. Just don't know what yet.

Good luck. Hope you figure out what works for you.

You've already gotten some great advice so I won't add to that. I do want to remind everyone to measure themselves. Sometimes on Atkins and other low carb plans you lose inches instead of pounds.

Find the right plan for you and you will be successful. It makes all the difference in the world.
