At what temp do you/your child start wearing capris?

I know there was a thread about shorts...but what about capris? I let my dd 8 talk me into it (yes, I know, I am the parent, I could have said NO) this morning because it is supposed to be 68 today here and she is just dying to wear something other than long pants. I swear the kid would break out the flip flops right now if I'd let her.

Now I'm wondering if the school is going to call me out on the no shorts before they say it is ok rule...but they are not shorts I would argue! I did send jeans incase she needs or wants them.

We're in NC, it's been a pretty mild winter but we have had some really cold days. DS has worn shorts to school most of the winter (I did make him change into jeans one morning when it was 10°). The school's classrooms are warm (almost hot), ds says he almost falls asleep in class.

DD would've worn capris today if they still fit.

Anyway, I think your DD will be fine.

About 70 for my kids. They can wear shorts to school year round if they want. Some of the boys do, but they're those long baggy ones that are pretty much like capris for boys.

I'm not so much worried about her being cold as I am the school giving her a hard time about it...they send a note home in fall telling us no more shorts and then again in spring telling us it's ok to wear them again. My best friends dd went to school one day in capris and the teacher ripped into her mom about the no shorts rule and she was pretty embarassed about it. I'd forgotten about it until I talked to her this am and told her my dd was wearing capris today.

When I was skimming through, I thought this thread was asking what AGE did you/your child start wearing shorts? I thought I was going to find out how I was a bad mom for letting her wear shorts right from the get-go.

When the temp gets over 50 degrees, I begin wearing dresses again. So, today, I'm back in a dress at work. I have no idea what that has to do with anything but it works for me. I did wear shorts around the house on Saturday because it was warm with the sun coming in and I was cleaning.

Schools now have a date or temperature when students are allowed to wear shorts? I've never heard of such a thing. What are the requirements?

I live in Northern Minnesota and work in a school. I have seen capris in Dec. at -30 below. The kids wear snowpants to school so they wear what they like. We don't dictate what the kids can wear other than as they get into Middle and High School they can not wear things that show, the 4BS ( Butts, breasts, backs and bellies). The parents are the decision makers in that department. We only intervene when it is obvious that they are not using safe judgement. (Kids with no wintercoats, boots,mittens when it is below zero.)

In the 70's here too. Shorts and sandals/flip flops are only allowed in school in September and from May 1st till the end of school.

It is supposed to be 68 here today as well and my DD wore a short sleeve dress. She wore a coat and I imagine she will be fine. If we were in Disney right now and it was 68, we'd be wearing shorts!

I wouldnt consider carpi's in the shorts category. If the teacher has a problem then she is just jealous that the child looks better in them then she does. LOL

The schools here have the temp/time of year rule too. Yet another reason I plan on cyber schooling. WHHOOPS wrong thread...I am a bad parent.

I dont understand why they limit it to certain times of the year and why they cant wear what they want when they want as long as it is not showing any of the body parts mentioned in decaff's post. Think about it. Years ago(1940's or so), the younger boys HAD to wear shorts and the girls HAD to wear dresses. It was considered proper. Times change. I would rather my DD had on shorts or capri's then a dress. Cant sneak up behind her and flip those puppys up to see what kind of panties she is wearing.

Well, it's going to be 67-70 today, and I'm wearing capris and flip-flops (casual office 'round here. The boss wears holey jeans and flip flops, too!). It's supposed to be 75 here tomorrow. I can't wait!

The kids here--we are in central New Hampshire will wear 'cut offs' all year 'round!
DS18 has been wearing the longer jean shorts since he hit 6th grade. there is a big horror of being called a 'winter weenie' here!
Oh, yeah, when it gets 10 or below/windy they will wear long pants

My DD6 wore capris yesterday and the temp only got up to 50 It was -5 here last week, though, so 50 seemed balmy to us She wears a school uniform/jumper with tights or leggings underneath. I probably won't let her go with ankle socks until it is 50ish in the morning when she leaves. Otherwise she gets too cold on in the schoolyard.

OOOHHH, don't talk about wearing flip flops to school...I got flamed for that once...

I understand the rule I guess, it's for the kids because some parents don't care if their young child wears shorts when it's 40 degrees and then they freeze...or they have nothing to wear when it's 40 degrees and have to wear shorts. I guess it serves as a reminder. If it were going to be 68 or so all day I might consider the flip flops as well but it was about 50 when she left for school this am.

It's usually sometime in early October they tell us no more shorts and then when it has reached about 75 for several days straight then say they can wear them again. I too much prefer shorts/capris over dresses. I see that Gymboree is carrying some plain white bike shorts that I plan to buy for under those dresses. Skorts were the best thing invented!

I love flip flops but understand why they are a no-no in some schools. They can be a safety hazard on stairs. The schools my older DD went to in TX allowed sandals or flip-flops as long as they had a strap around the back. Sensible as someone can step on them and cause the child to fall down stairs.

Shorts arent Capris. If they dont want them wearing them then they need to say it in the rules. If a teacher ripped into me about something like that we would be in the principals office having a talk about it.

I guess they dont let kids wear shorts until they say so because they dont want to hear kids whining they are cold and can i call my mom for pants...etc.

I get that too - we don't have stairs. My issue (if I remember correctly) was that she wore a dress one day and of course tennies don't look good with a dress! Anyhow, teacher did not allow her to change into her PE shoes (she has both indoor and outdoor shoes in her locker) before they went outside to run on the cinder track. She ended up wiping out and hurting herself...cinders tear up your skin pretty easily. She hasn't worn flips back to school since. But...I'm pretty sure I was flamed for allowing it in the first place even though the school sent home a letter saying they could wear them or sandals as long as they had proper footwear for PE. I also had an issue with kids running on a cinder track (80 of them pretty much all at once) that was deemed unsafe for the high school track team to run on. That got me some flames as well.

So, where is that bad parent thread anyway?

I would definitely not consider capris in the same category as shorts. Heck, we live in VT and I have let my kids wear capris if they wanted to all winter long. They wear snowpants when they go outside for recess, so they won't get cold.

I really subscribe to the "natural consequences" idea. If they wear shorts and they are cold, then they will be cold. If they don't care, then I don't care, and neither should the school. If they are too cold, they will wear pants tomorrow.

My 7 year old daughter thought her hair would be cute if she put her short bangs into a pony tail, and wore it like a "reindeer" in the middle of her forehead. I gently explained that it isn't how most people wear their hair, and someone might laugh at her if she went to school like that. But I did let her walk out of the house. She decided on the way to the bus stop that the pony tail holder would probably fall out when she took her hat off, so she took it out, but I was completely ready to let her go to school looking like a reindeer.
