My older son slept through the night when he was around 6 months old. On the other hand, my younger son did not sleep through the night until he was 3 years old. And even then, it was not every night. When he could talk he would tell us, My bed done! This was usually at 2 or 3 in the morning. Now younger DS is 16 and can sleep until 10 or 11 in the morning if we let him!

My daughter will be 2 this month and says the same thing! She's got a Pooh bed (it's an inflatable toddler bed with Pooh characters on the 'headboard' and blanket cause she will not sleep in her regular bed anymore and was sleeping on the floor) and she'll come stand next to my bed during the night and say "Finished Pooh Bed" and then climbs in with us.

DD slept through the night (11pm-6am) for the first time on her 4 week old birthday. Within another 4 weeks, she was consistently sleeping 9 hour nights. Yippee!!

Wow, lots of responses! It's good to know that we're not that odd.

To clarify, I do not nurse or rock DD to sleep. For every nap and at nighttime, I put her in the crib awake and she falls asleep on her own. Per just about every book I've ever read, she should be able to sleep through the night no problem if she has this "skill". Yeah, right. Some nights she wakes 4 or 5 times.

At any rate, thanks for your input. :thumbsup2

It was the same thing with my DD. She knew how to fall alseep by herself fine. It as fall back alseep she just couldn't do. We did have to let her cry it out. I didn't like it, but it worked (and the food allgeries is more then likely part of it, because before we got them under control, she could not cry it out, she would cry for hours.) Also I tended to nurse her because she was so small, I wanted her to get all the food she could. Doctor said it wouldn't hurt her at all, just me for lack of sleep.

Things are better. Hang in there, it will get better. :goodvibes

Yeah, my daughter had that skill too. Basically from birth. She'd go into her little bed awake everynight, but come 4.5 months and she would simply not go back to sleep on her own during the night.

My daughter, 1st child, didn't sleep through until about 6-7 months old. The ped said it was because we were still giving her a bottle in the middle of the night and she was expecting it. So we stopped that feeding, she was getting enough the rest of the day, and a couple of days later she was sleeping through.

My son, however, started sleeping through at 5-6 weeks old, before I went back to work.

By 6 mths DS was sleeping through the night. I remember going to his 4 mth well baby visit...at that time he was going to sleep for the night around 10/11, waking up again at 1am, and then again at 4/5am. Our ped said that DS may have us fooled, but not her. She said he didn't need that 1am feeding. So for a couple of nights we let him cry, and sure enough, he didn't need that feeding!

DD was 7 weeks old. She started sleeping through the night the week I went back to work. Bless her heart!!!

:rotfl: Aren't they smart so young!! :goodvibes I figured that out with DD early on. She started waking up for a few days (probably around 6 months) in a row and wanting to eat. Instead of milk I gave her water and I guess she decided that water wasn't worth getting up for so she broke that bad habit pretty quickly! If we woke up every morning at 2am and had a snack it would become a pretty quick habit for us also!

well, DS slept thru the night at about 2 1/2 yrs of age :scared:
Then he wouldn't sleep longer than 6 hrs in a row until after the age of 14.
I even tried to keep him up late, but he always awoke at 5:30 am!
and he was always a busy guy! :crazy2:
In the infant/toddler years I think it was due to our breast feeding schedule then he also was plagued by asthma-

Geeze Louise, now DS17 can sleep 10 hrs, no problemo! :sad2:
I have to set an alarm clock so I will remember to call him downstairs--once I got busy & forgot all about him & there he is snoozing until afternoon!

DS13 was 2 months, the twins were 3 months. Once a baby is 11 lbs, they are capable of sleeping through the night unless there is an underlying medical problem.

That is not true for a breastfed baby. Babies are designed to eat small amounts every few hours throughout the day/night. Breast milk digest within 90 minutes and babies go through growth spurts every so often and need to nurse more to create more milk. (ie, more night waking). I do not think that is a current rule of thumb for a formula fed baby either. Weight really has nothing to do with the ability to sleep through.....some babies do eat more often than others and some just wake more. All are normal and healthy. To say 11 pounds is it for night waking is unrealistic and does not take into account normal baby behavior. :)

My DD was 6 weeks old, my son is 4 and still gets up almost every night. LOL
He comes moseying into our room and climbs in bed around 3am without waking us up, so I really don't even care.

Mine slept through the night at 2 weeks! She has always been a good sleeper. She's 14 now and still needs nine or ten hours of sleep at night.

My older son did not sleep through the night until 14 months.

My younger son slept 7 hours straight the first night we were home from the hospital.

As a PP said, my older son has tons of allergies including food allergies and I think we were making him miserable.

I did not do anything different with the boys, they are just different (both breastfeed just past 1 year, both co-sleep with us, both nursed to sleep until 9 months or so).

Good Luck and do what works for you!

both DS and DD slept thru the night betw 3 and 4 months old.

(Then again, AND no bashing for this, my kids slept on their side and stomachs most of the time and I think that helped)

Good luck with your efforts, I know how hard it is without the full night to sleep!

I voted 3 - 6 months, but both kids were actually about 8 - 10 weeks (couldn't do the math when I voted, duh). I also let them fall asleep on their sides or stomachs, then flipped them when they were asleep. Good luck!

DS#1 slept through the night before he was 1 month old.

DS#2 is 2 & still doesn't always (usually not) sleeping through the night. He does have respitatory issues which I think effects it a lot.

DS#3 is just 5 months old & isn't sleeping through the night regularly, but does 1-2 times a week; we're getting there & has been for about 3 weeks

All my kids breastfeed for the first year! I also don't have to hold or rock them asleep, although i love  to do that. I could never let my kids cry it out, breaks my heart, but do find it tempting--especially with DS2 (but it might cause a trip to the hospital).
