astro orbiter for those afraid of heights

Ok...I hate heights. Our first family trip in 2003 my girls laughed at me because my Dumbo was riding along the bottom. You should have seen me freak when it rose up to the top with all the others at the end. AGH!!!

So....several trips later I have finally conquered the Dumbos of Death as their affectionately known at our house and can actually ride at the top. My 6yr old is very happy that she can now go up and down.

Well........what about Astro Orbiter.....do ya'll think I'm ready? My youngest hasn't ever ridden it cause her poor, scared mom can't take it.

Ok, here is my experience.

Not really big on the dumbo/aladdin rides either. I prefer to stay on the bottom on those types of rides, too

Anyways. I tried astro orbitor during MVMCP in December...oh my...hated it!!! Never again. I stayed at the bottom on that to, but the bottom really isn't the bottom as you are already up a flight. The whole space ship tilted in and I felt like I was going to fall out. The fireworks were going off when we were on it, hoped that would distract me, nope.

I have been going to WDW since 79, I can remember growing up (not sure when) my brothers and dad going on it and my mom and I would go on the eastern ride (now buzz) and the people mover. My DH, father, took DS on it the next day and he loved it!! UGH.....luckily he didn't moan when we went down last week and I said that mommy or Gran couldn't go on that ride. Plus the line was horrendous!!

I went on the Astro Orbitor during my last trip for the first time. I will go on almost any kind of ride and enjoyed it quite a bit. However, I do remember thinking that we were pretty high up, and that it spun around pretty darn quickly (I didn't think it went around that fast!!)!

I really don't like being up too high or on anything that tilts or makes me think I am going to fall out. That being said, I did ride Astro many years ago b/c my nephew needed someone to ride with. I do remember being a little freaked out at first when you started going up. But, I just kept talking to my nephew the whole time, we saw where we were staying, just tried to stay distracted and not look down. It wasn't terrible...going this year with DS..may have to ride again...I will say it is not my favorite

Ao is alot faster than Dumbo too. I am not afraid of heights, but I don't care for this ride.

I'm afraid of heights and only did Triceratops Spin because my granddaughter REALLY wanted to go on it. She didn't want to do the controls and I'm glad because that gave me something to do while flying around in that stupid plastic dinosaur. Next time, I made my mother-in-law go on it instead.

That being said, I can't even look at the Astro Orbiter without feeling sick. My husband did it for the first time a few years ago with a friend. When he came back down he immediately said that I would not have liked it at all. In fact, HE felt a bit uneasy while up there.

You do realize that you first have to take an elevator up to the loading platform and THEN get into the vehicles which go up and down? *shudder* I wouldn't even make it to the loading platform.

ok.....I think it's still a no afte reading all these. I hate the way the Dumbos lean.....if Astro also leans I'm done for.

Youngest dd will just have to settle for riding the People Mover while the others are on Astro; I'm glad she likes it!!!

DH doesn't do heights - he ran out of Soarin' the first time we did it, but he's since braved it and likes it once it gets going.

But the Astro thing! He did it once, and he STILL talks about how awful it was. He will never do it again!

My sisters made fun of me because I was scared on Aladdin but I will ride any big roller coaster and I totally refuse to go on Astro Orbitor. Being in a roller coaster car is just a different feeling then being high in the air on a carpet. It gives me heart palpitations just looking at Astro since it is so high up. If you are like me I recommend sitting that one out but since you conquered Dumbo you might be ready.

I'm with your dh Harambe. Soarin was really scary the first time I rode it.....and I made sure we were in the lowest row. I had to put on a brave front for my then 4 yr old and then closed my eyes in the whole fireworks part and prayed.

I'm afraid of heights, but Astro Orbiter didn't bother me for some reason. Well, at least the height didn't. Astro Orbiter made me pretty dizzy, and after I went on BTTMR a half-hour later, I was more than dizzy. I don't recommend that ride combination for those people prone to motion sickness. I didn't feel like I was going to fall out when AO started tilting and that's really my main problem with heights, feeling like I'm going to fall.

What have I been missing!!!! I have never gone on that ride because it looked like a lame waste of time. But if you all feel as you do, perhaps I have been mistaken!

That seals it. I need to go back to WDW. Someone tell my DH.

I'll be honest with you -- I have no fear of heights whatsoever, love to bump the Dumbos and other such rides up and down rapidly, and I was a little taken aback on my first Astro Orbiter ride last year. I got into the car with my niece, sat down, put the giganto-seat belt on while rolling my eyes at the need for it ... but once we got started I thought "ah, that's why there's a seat belt!"

It moves at a significant tilt where Dumbo does not, and it's waaaaay up in the sky.

I found it more fun than I had expected, but probably not enough to offset the super long wait for it. And since the chief fun of it (for me) was the height, speed and tilt, I would NOT recommend it under any circumstances to those with a fear of heights.

If Dumbo was a challenge for you, skip this one.

For those following this thread. I just talked to the husband who rode this one time.

CAGE elevator to get to the loading platform. I can't even look out of a glass elevator in a hotel lobby.

SEE THROUGH loading platform. Cage style again but you can see the ground. And that's BEFORE you go up and down in the vehicles.

Nope, I'm staying on the ground, thank you very much.

Don't Do It!
I don't like heights but don't mind rides that go high, like Everest or Dumbo.
I went on Astro Orbiter for the first time last trip and was scared out of my mind.
It leans horribly to one side and you are miles up in the air.
I would never go on it again.
I also can't do the sky ride that takes you up at the water parks, I can't stand my feet hanging out.

I ride the highest coasters there are. You know the kind that go STRAIGHT UP and STRAIGHT DOWN. Never a care (well the little thrill coaster riders enjoy!) -- I ride (DH can't even do these) the rides that take you up a HUGE tower and drop you down. -- I also ride ALL the coasters, Dumbo, Aladdin, etc... at Disney.

BUT I WAS NEVER AS FRIGHTENED BY A RIDE AS I WAS ON ASTRO ORBITER. I prayed for the ride to be over. I was shaking ... totally horrified. I felt like I was going to fall out!!!

DH liked it. He said it was the ride closest to what flying a plane is like that he has ever been on.

He rides it alone now. I will NEVER EVER EVER ride Astro Orbiter again.

Reading this thread bought back a memory i think i had tried to supress!!!
Didnt like alladin, but did it,
dont mind everest, soarin or splash mountain at all, infact loved them!
So at MNSHHP last year i decided to try astro orbiter, i fely dizzy on the platform, sat in the rocket & then had a kinda panic attack & i had to ask the cast member to let me off before he started the ride, felt sooo silly & couldnt get back on solid ground quick enough!!

Go figure - our DD8 who is afraid of Splash Mountain, Tower of Terror, Dinosaur, Space Mountain, etc. LOVES Astro Orbiter and wants to ride it repeatedly. Astro Orbiter scares the living daylights out of both DH and I, who will ride everything DD is afraid of plus Everest and Rockin Roller Coaster.

Our solution - DS 16 has to ride Astro Orbiter with his little sister!

I can pretty much ride any roller coaster. I don't mind rides like the Teacups. But for some reason, when I rode the AstroOrbiter a few years ago, I was genuinely freaked out by it. Like someone else said, I kinda felt like I was gonna fall out of it. I'm not saying I'll never go on it again, but I did not enjoy AstroOrbiter!
