Associate Members?

What exactly is an "associate member"? What can they do with the points? Are there any financial obligations for them? Do they get the same discounts as members?

I would like to list my parents as associate members, but I don't want them to have any financial obligation. They will probably use some of our points every three years or so. I know I can make the reservations for them, but I want them to have access to any "perks" that they can. The AP discount is irrelevant because they won't go annually. I'm wondering more about the golf and dining discounts. Also, can you add associate members to a contract after you've closed?

From the member website:
An "Associate" is a person named by the Purchaser or Purchasers who is only authorized to make reservations using the Member's Home Resort Vacation Points. Associates do not receive Member Cards and are not entitled to the benefits and privileges that are available to a Member. In addition, Associates may not access financial information related to Annual Dues and/or loan pertaining to the Membership.

You can add/remove associate members on the member website.

You can add anyone as an associate member to your membership at any time. An associate member can make reservations (as if they were a member) and bank and borrow points to do so. They are not entitled to any DVC discounts. They do not assume any of the member's financial obligations such as for dues.

I think this is what I will do for my parents. That way, my dad can make his own reservations and not rely on me to screw it up for him!

The actual owner can purchase AP's for anybody living at their address. As already noted, the Associate member is not eligible for any of the DVC member benefits.
